Snip

As the doors opened, Than had pushed himself off the wall to greet her and paused as she made her way out. She had done her hair on a more professional looking style, obviously with check ins in mind for later and adjusted her uniform from the travels. Than knew she must be tired and likely wanted nothing more than to sit down in the quiet for a small while and relax before attending to the ever present duties, he himself wanted nothing more when he had arrived and yet she had agreed to visit the lounge with him. He couldn’t deny the chemistry that might have been reacting between them, especially as he looked at her in the small seconds that passed while she emerged from the room.

With her hair pulled back into a bun, her face was revealed more fully and her galaxy black eyes shone as he looked into them. With her shock of red hair out of the way, Than noticed her cheeks were lightly freckled and he marveled at how cute she appeared like that. Her hair worn out had drawn attention and she was beautiful, but with the delicate curvature of her face bare and her freckles now evident, her dark eyes became the center of that universe. A universe that was amazing in how it took his breath away once again.

“No,” he said as he smiled gently. “Every time I have seen you, you’ve made me fight for words and forget to breathe. I don’t think I ever want to get used to that.” He let out a quiet chuckle as the compliment was released. He hadn’t meant to say it out loud, but there it was and Than was actually happy he had said it. It sounded far less cheesy out loud than it did in his head. Some might consider it too forward, but life was short. Than might not see Elmira again for days, maybe weeks, who knew, and he might not get the chance to give her the compliment. Now, she could do with it what she wanted.

It was difficult to fight the blush that dressed her freckled cheeks. In any case, she might have dismissed the compliment, disregarding it as cheesy or otherwise trivial. Although, something about Than made it impossible for her to muster the nerve to make such a statement. Feeling as though the temperature in the hall had suddenly spiked, Elmira brushed her fingers against the back of her neck. “Don’t forget to breathe. If you do, I might not get the chance to enjoy more time with you.” She smiled, softly. “The thought isn’t very appealing.”

“Shall we go? I think I owe you a drink after that.” He tilted his head down the passage way in the direction of the lounge, his eyes and smile not yet leaving her.

“That you do,” Her smile melted into a razzing smirk, as if the scrutiny of her impenetrable gaze were not teasing enough.

Than couldn’t help but grin in return, turning and walking with her in the direction he had indicated. His own eyes held her in view for just a moment, before turning so he could watch where the two were headed. It just wouldn’t do to get lost already, although he thought it might just be fun sometime to just walk, get lost and talk with her more and see where they ended up. “We aren’t far, just around down the corridor.”

Nodding, she threw a glance down the hall, catching Than out of the corner of her eye. He was a sight she hoped would not be lost on her, once the evening faded into a new day. Although, their departments could not be any more distant than they already were. Her work confined her mostly to the bridge, the peak of the ship, where his held him in her bowels. It was an unfortunate mess of fate, but she held on to the hope that their differences would not separate them too greatly.

Allowing her gaze to retreat from her subtle stare, she leisurely passed through the halls, walking at a pace that would easily allow Than to take charge. After all, he was the one who knew this ship and the winding of her corridors. Seconds passed, Elmira searching for something to say. Although her throat felt hollow, her voice box cracked and dry, no matter how hard she thought, nothing seemed to fit the situation. You would think her last of knowledge around Than would make it easier to find a source of conversation, but it seemed only to add to the complexity.

He noted that they walked in silence for a moment, but to Than it didn’t seem awkward at all. Elmira held an air of mystery that he wanted to breathe in, but he didn’t want to jump in all at once. She didn’t seem the type to reveal all anyway, and he wanted to experience the mystery, not hear about it. All at once, she could seem distant or a little aloof, but her eyes and smile told of a different person than she let people see. Walking with her in silence wasn’t uncomfortable, and his mind had the time to pick out the little details of her as they walked.

“So.. do you have a particular drink you enjoy?” Elmira asked, mentally kicking herself in the shins. You’d think someone with the education it took to be a Starfleet officer would at least have the wit to come up with something smarter to say. Usually she did, but somehow this was different. Closing her eyes, she took in a soft breath, debating whether or not to make up some kind of excuse for her lack of conversation. Shrugging it off, she let the question hang in the air, praying it was enough for him.

Smiling, he thought for a moment. “Well, it depends on the situation,” he began, “Aside from Coffee, I’m fond of Denevan Whiskey, but that’s either a party or nightcap drink. I know what I don’t like, and that’s most Wines, terrible stuff. I never got used to the taste of it.” He looked at her and grinned as without thought he slowed and put his hand on the small of her back to stop her overshooting, indicating a turn at the junction they had reached. It was an action without thought, but he realized as he felt his hand touch her that he had done just that. The thought and light touch was soft, but she felt electric beneath his fingers as they seemed to tingled at the touch of her.

“Just down here,” he told Elmira, and looked down the corridor at the two doors that led to the lounge. Then, his eyes returned to look down at hers as they paused at the junction, his touch having brought him closer to her in that moment and he found his breathing again shallow, his pulse having quickened slightly. “How about you?” He asked her in reply to her question about the drink, and he almost felt the slap about his ear as either the proverbial angel or devil on his shoulder scolded him for making a hash of the moment. They must have clipped his ears good, as he felt the warmth in them as he looked at her.
