Maji straightened imaginary creases from her uniform before entering Sickbay. When she’d received the orders assigning her to the Saracen, she’d looked over the ships’ layout and its roster, but didn’t recognize any of the names listed. That had been six days ago. Upon arriving, Maji had gotten her quarters assignment and taken a few minutes to freshen up before heading out to meet her new department head.

When the bay doors opened to allow her entrance, one hand stole up to her neck where a black cuff encircled her neck and rose one inch above the uniform collar. It guarded the most fragile part of her anatomy—small gills that allowed her to breathe in water. It was an ability Maji was proud of, but also one that was slowly evolving out of the ‘land dwellers’ on her planet, M43.

Taking a few steps inside Medical, light blue eyes looked around with excitement. It was the most complete and up to date bay she’d seen thus far in her career and she was more than ready to jump right in. But first…”Excuse me, Lt Maji reporting to see the Chief Medical Officer? I just arrived today.” She spoke to an older looking nurse with a sharp gaze.

Nurse Longstreet, sour and more than a little acerbic was less than impressed with the waify looking thing in front of her. She fixed her most dour gaze upon this sweet young thing “Yes… So I see… I’m Nurse Longstreet, the Chief Nursing Officer. You’ll find Doctor Harrison in the lab… Always in the lab… If I didn’t turn off the lights myself, I’d swear he sleeps there.” She gestured through the door to the left “Through there. Past the surgical suites and recovery ward, take a right. The labs are through there. He’ll be in the back. He’s claimed that for himself and his damned foolish research… Well?… Get along with yourself, young woman, you’re a Doctor, not a doorstop!”

Maji felt herself pulling back, physically and emotionally, from the stern woman. Hopefully, she wouldn’t have to work too many shifts with the CNO because it seemed the woman didn’t care for people. Or maybe it was just certain people? Perhaps it would be alright once they got to know each other. Maybe…

With a shooing gesture and not a second thought, the woman bustled through, her viper gaze firmly fixed on another young Doctor who was currently unforgivably destroying the arrangement of a trauma cart.

Moving away in the direction Nurse Longstreet pointed, Lt Maji tried to take in as much detail as possible as she wound through the back hallways and rooms of the medical department. Once she made it to the labs, she began looking for a space that might be good for her own experiments. If the CMO would allow it, she wanted to continue her research on aquatic creatures in her off time. It was her long term goal to return to M43 and offer treatment and genetic testing and correction, to the inhabitants of her own world.

Her walk soon ended at the back of a large, busy looking lab. She could hear someone moving around, but hadn’t caught sight of them yet. “Excuse me? Doctor Harrison? I’m Lt Maji, reporting for duty, Sir.”

Bending a little uncomfortably over a sub-nuclei scan from a series of Cardassian tissue samples, he didn’t notice anyone entering the room. He was tapping notes into a PADD without looking, a habit he’d picked up as a child from his father. Not the most accurate way to record thoughts, but certainly a good way to get them down before they flitted away at the seemingly incessant interruptions. There was an odd disconnect between his research persona and his public persona. Perhaps because he really was the embodiment of the absentminded professor when he was absorbed in his research. It took him a moment to register anyone had spoken, even after she was finished. Perhaps three or four seconds passed before he made note that someone else was in the room. He stood up to his full, but not particularly tall height, his now wrinkled blue lab coat falling unevenly over his duty uniform, the pockets bulging with The First Mother only knew what. Cracking his back for a second, he ran his hand across his shaven scalp, subconsciously checking for stubble before turning with a slight lean to each side, stretching his cramped stomach and abdominal muscles. He turned, his eyes still slightly absent as he tried to remember if he’d noted everything he wanted. He didn’t really focus on the new arrival for several more seconds before his gaze refocused on her and the slightly irritated beetling of his brows gave way to a delighted smile. He crossed the room in just a few short strides, beaming happily “Well I’ll be! Cade.... No… Lieutenant Maji! My, my, what a pleasant surprise! What brings you to my slightly unhappy hole in the universe?!”

As soon as she spotted the bald man, something in her subconscious sat up and took note of him. For some reason she found herself trying to recognize the bent form before he stood. The more he moved, stretching and dissociating himself from the work he’d been doing, the more Maji became aware of a familiarity. It wasn’t until he turned completely in her direction and settled his light colored eyes on her, that her face broke into a smile. “Cmdr Harrison! I had no idea you were assigned to the Saracen. In fact, I’m sure there was another name on the roster I received when I got my orders.”

He tutted, chidingly “Doctor, please. You know i’ve never put too much stock in military protocol. I’ve only been aboard about a week, myself. I rather imagine the previous fellow is likely still listed on several transfer orders. Here I am though, braving the frontier and whatnot.”

She looked around for a moment. “I see you are continuing your research?” Drawing in her bottom lip, she caught it with her lower teeth, wondering if she’d be allowed to help him in any way. “Oh…I guess I’m going to be working for you now. I only arrived about an hour ago. How have you been?”

He tapped a sequence into a PADD he pulled from his bulging pockets and placed it down next to a bank of tissue germinators. The machine lit up and the glittering field of a stasis grid sprang into being. Removing his blue coat and hanging it in a corner, next to the replicator, he turned back, gesturing “Care to grab a quick bite? I think I may have missed a meal or two, and I’m told one of the Engineering crewmen has programmed some fascinating sounding Saurian dishes into the replicator in 8 Forward.” He proceeded through the door, his speech never stopping “Yes, still researching. I’ve made some headway with universal treament protocols, but there are still some common protein sequences I can’t pin down… Enough about me though, how have things progressed for you? Well, clearly, given your rapid rise.”
