“Fine? Well, I suppose that’s better than some.” he said and then took a sip and set the cup down on the low table. Leaning back a bit, he said “Now, you do know that this whole thing is easier if you actually talk, right?” with a friendly grin, his brogue lending a warmth to his words.

Sinclair, CNS

Enina unfolded her hands enough so that she could circle her pointer fingers around one another. She studied her rotating fingers carefully for a few moments before directing her attention back at the counselor.

“I don’t have anything to talk about,” she responded, with a nonchalant shrug. “I mean, I know how these things go, I’m a Starfleet brat, but I don’t have any secret conditions or murderous tendencies or anything…” Clearly, she didn’t hold the psychological evaluation process in much esteem. Really, she just wanted to get out of here and move on to finding out where engineering was and how she could improve the CMO’s office. She tilted her head back against the back of the couch and stared at the ceiling, mentally moving walls in Sickbay around to see if she could squeeze out a little more room here or there.

“Can I go yet?” she questioned, in an entirely serious tone despite the somewhat immature nature of the question.

Sinclair cocked his head to the side and looked at her intently for a long moment and then said “By all means. You are free to go whenever you like, Ensign.” and he turned off the PaDD resting on his knee. “Of course, I can’t clear you for duty until I have done your on-boarding assessment. But I’m sure you will be quite content to sit in your quarters and not be allowed to work until such time as your transfer comes through. That would be back to Earth, I would assume, as you would be perceived as not cleared for duty aboard a star ship or station. But again, I’m sure from reviewing your record that that won’t be an issue for an individual such as yourself. And of course, without being cleared for duty, all your access will be suspended until you transfer off. You’ll still have access to your quarters and the dining and exercise facilities, of course. But not the holodecks… and certainly not Engineering. Can’t have just anyone running around the ship, you know?” he said with a friendly smile and another small chuckle, and he picked up his tea and stood up, turning to go back to his desk. “Take care, Ensign. Safe travels.” he said and waved her as dismissed.

Sinclair, CNS

Enina stared somewhat blankly at him as he went through his spiel. Well, here the counselor wanted her to be talking and all he had done is encouraged her to keep her mouth shut. As he concluded his lecture on the access level of uncleared Starfleet officers, she raised an eyebrow at him and gave a slightly sardonic chuckle. “I assume in your review of my record you also discovered I’m pretty good at entertaining myself,” she responded, her voice even and displaying little reaction to his words. She leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees as she studied Sinclair. “I’m also pretty darn familiar with Starfleet protocol, so you can skip to the summary notes next time that I’m basically stuck here until you say otherwise.” She was about to ask what she needed to do to get out of there and be cleared for duty, but instead, sat back again with her arms crossed across her chest. She didn’t really want to know his prepared answer for that question. She uncrossed her arms and recrossed them the other direction, looking remarkably like the sullen teenager she hadn’t much aged out of. Finally, she grumbled, “what now?”

Ensign Nox, Eng

Sinclair smiled slightly. “Oh, I’m done. And you are not stuck at all. Door is right there. You obviously do not want to be here. And my job, contrary to popular opinion, is not to pry loose secrets or acquiescence from those that don’t want to speak freely. I am familiar with your record, your personal history. And that’s all well and good as far as that goes. So please… feel free to go. No issue from me. As you said… you know protocol. I’m not going to try and teach you something you already know.” and smiled briefly and then looked down at the PaDD on his knee and began tapping in a few notes.

Sinclair, CNS

Enina’s sullen expression crossed rapidly into a frown as she digested Sinclair’s words and her green eyes flashed with annoyance. Was Sinclair just dense or was he playing purposely obtuse? Clearly he knew and she knew that he needed to clear her for duty and her question had been quite clear in trying to find out how to make that happen. While she didn’t particularly care to show up for regular shifts, losing her access as an engineering officer would lead to a more boring and frustrating existence than she was going for. Finally, she snapped at him, her body stiffening, “if you’re any good at your job, you know what I mean and I’d really prefer to avoid an irate call from my parents about why I’ve been removed from duty so quickly.” Her mouth closed and then opened again as if she had more to say, but she waited, eyes carefully studying the CNS with a slight bit of suspicion in them.
