Enina stared somewhat blankly at him as he went through his spiel. Well, here the counselor wanted her to be talking and all he had done is encouraged her to keep her mouth shut. As he concluded his lecture on the access level of uncleared Starfleet officers, she raised an eyebrow at him and gave a slightly sardonic chuckle. “I assume in your review of my record you also discovered I’m pretty good at entertaining myself,” she responded, her voice even and displaying little reaction to his words. She leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees as she studied Sinclair. “I’m also pretty darn familiar with Starfleet protocol, so you can skip to the summary notes next time that I’m basically stuck here until you say otherwise.” She was about to ask what she needed to do to get out of there and be cleared for duty, but instead, sat back again with her arms crossed across her chest. She didn’t really want to know his prepared answer for that question. She uncrossed her arms and recrossed them the other direction, looking remarkably like the sullen teenager she hadn’t much aged out of. Finally, she grumbled, “what now?”

Sinclair smiled slightly. “Oh, I’m done. And you are not stuck at all. Door is right there. You obviously do not want to be here. And my job, contrary to popular opinion, is not to pry loose secrets or acquiescence from those that don’t want to speak freely. I am familiar with your record, your personal history. And that’s all well and good as far as that goes. So please… feel free to go. No issue from me. As you said… you know protocol. I’m not going to try and teach you something you already know.” and smiled briefly and then looked down at the PaDD on his knee and began tapping in a few notes.

Sinclair, CNS

Enina’s sullen expression crossed rapidly into a frown as she digested Sinclair’s words and her green eyes flashed with annoyance. Was Sinclair just dense or was he playing purposely obtuse? Clearly he knew and she knew that he needed to clear her for duty and her question had been quite clear in trying to find out how to make that happen. While she didn’t particularly care to show up for regular shifts, losing her access as an engineering officer would lead to a more boring and frustrating existence than she was going for. Finally, she snapped at him, her body stiffening, “if you’re any good at your job, you know what I mean and I’d really prefer to avoid an irate call from my parents about why I’ve been removed from duty so quickly.” Her mouth closed and then opened again as if she had more to say, but she waited, eyes carefully studying the CNS with a slight bit of suspicion in them.

Sinclair looked up and directly at her. He cocked his head to the side and a small grin was hinted at the upturn of the corner of his mouth. “Well, I like to think I’m pretty good at my job. And at least now I know you and your parents have a bit of a contentious relationship. That’s something, I suppose. Now, if you’d like to tell me a bit about that, I’m happy to listen. But I’m not going to force you. You being approved to come on board or not has no bearing on my day. But it does on yours, Ensign. So you can either help me get your check in done and be on your way, or you can go to your quarters and wait for the irate call from your folks. Choice is yours. But I really would like to help you avoid that. I know what it’s like to have a parent that you don’t get on with.” and he looked back down at the desk. “Was a pain in my aft quarter as well.” and he went back to his task.

Enina’s suspicion continued, especially at Sinclair’s attempt to build rapport with her over their mutual parental discord. He might have a bit of a different technique than she was used to, but that was classic counselor behavior. Her body tensed as she remained silent for a few moments, debating her options at this point. While the rapport building was a little cliche, she could at least appreciate his no nonsense attitude and the lack of placating “oh, tell me how you feel about your parents.” Staring at her hands for a few moments, she looked up to meet Sinclair’s eyes and commented, “I don’t think many people get along with their parents when they’re flag officers whose careers have been their priority since day one.” She was willing to concede this piece of information since it was obviously easy attainable from her service record.

“Probably not. It would certainly make Christmas awkward… not to mention disciplinary hearings.” Sinclair said with a chuckle. After a short pause, he said “So let me ask you this. If your parent’s careers were always the priority, why did you choose to follow the same path? Last thing I wanted was to end up working in the shipyards like my dad did.”

Enina glared at him as she processed his question, but after a few moments, sighed as her face softened slightly. “Starfleet is all I know,” she retorted, although not quite as caustically as she had spoken previously. She added somewhat under her breath, “I didn’t have any better ideas.” She blushed slightly as she realized, with a slight annoyance, that he was actually managing to pry some information out of her.
