Sensing the tension and the hesitancy in the room, DaVinci spoke up. “I’ve often found it best to spill everything you can. Get it all out there. When and where I come from, half the crew of this ship were nothing than figments of our imaginations. There’s not a whole lot that surprises me anymore.”

Colter (CIO)

Boja’s dark eyes settled on Colter and she seemed rather unimpressed. “This isn’t about trying to surprise anyone, trust me. Whether you are or aren’t will make no difference to how we proceed.” It was more curt than she ever was usually, but at the moment she didn’t care. She knew few of the senior staff very well anymore, besides Teller and Jarred, so she had no real rapport with any of them except for, perhaps, Gavain.

Teller took a deep breath drawing her attention to him. He spread his fingers out slightly and closed his eyes - gesturing for her to calm down. He said in a low voice, “We all friends here.”

Thank the Universe for Teller. She wasn’t trying to be difficult, really, but there was so much on the line for her personally that she had little humour about any of it at the moment. She took a slow and deep breath and willed herself to relax at least a little bit.

The CIO tilted his head at Satreya and was a bit surprised by her somewhat surly comment. “No offense was meant, Dr. Boja. I was simply making an observation. I’m ready and willing to help in any way I can.”

Colter (CIO)
She turned her attention to the Captain. “Shall I just start and let the others catch up as they get here?”

Lt. Boja, CMO

Just as she said that, Seamus entered the room, very aware he was late. He silently took a seat, making eye contact with no one.

Dante looked over the table for a moment and then spoke for a moment. “This briefing has been called to inform you of a development that you all need to be aware of, as we may soon be in contact with an unknown species who may or may not be hostile. For this briefing, I am going to ask Lieutenant Boja to lead as she is the person best suited to inform you of what we may be facing. Lieutenant, please proceed.”

Contact with an unknown species?

That got Sha’s attention. She had heard whispers, fragments and speculation, but had dismissed and ignored then. The fact it was real made her swallow a growl.

Looking seriously around the table, this time taking conscious note of everyone present, the half Klingon began to watch reactions as details began to come. Sometimes reactions gave more information than words, themselves.

Satreya nodded to the captain and then looked around the table. She took a deep breath and then began. “So, it’s not a terribly big secret that I am an orphan. Know one knows where I came from or who my parents were. All we know is that in 2356, I was found roaming about Deneva Colony on my own. They tried to track down my parents, but with no success. And I couldn’t really help, because at the time I had no memories before Deneva and I was already telepathic at that age. I was so inundated that I had gone mute and it took a Betazoid psychologist to figure out what was going on with me and bring me out of my shell. But those previous memories were not just missing, there was a wall in my very formidable mind that I couldn’t get through.

“Fast forward to a few years ago and I had an opportunity to find out about my past. I’ve gone my whole life wondering who I was, where I’m from and why, unlike other telepathic and empathic hybrids, my abilities are stronger to an extreme point, rather than dulled down. From this opportunity, which I’m not going to go into detail about”-she avoided looking at Colter entirely since it was the kind of info the man would always desire and she wasn’t telling-“I learned something vital, but the information was cryptic. After thinking it over awhile, I tested a hypothesis and was correct. The fact is, that I am not from this Universe. I don’t know how I got here, but my quantum signature does not match any of yours, and it’s something we can prove fairly easily in Sickbay.

Satreya exhaled. “It’s an even longer story I’m not going to get into, but recently, that wall in my mind was cracked, just a little bit. With some careful guided exploration, I was able to peek behind. And I have seen and felt some very… disturbing things. I don’t know enough to really answer a lot of questions, but I have this clear impression of people hunting for me. I don’t know why, but at least some of those people do not wish me well. Others are less clear. And the more I explored this, the more I realized that that wall in my mind was a barrier preventing others from that Universe from finding me. Now they know I’m here and all I can say is that I know they are coming.” Boja gestured to Teller. “Lt. Graham set up a tracking system after my… incident… to alert us if any quantum signals matching mine showed up. One just has, about ten lightyears from the Saracen.

The doctor reached out and placed the hypo that had been in her hand on the table. “This is a counter measure we’ve come up with that uses some idiosyncrasies in my biochemistry as a basis for what we expect my slow down anyone from that Universe should they act board the ship and act in a hostile way. It can be sprayed into the air at that person and if it works right, should cause them more than a little discomfort.” She couldn’t help it, but she gazed at that hypo with just a tiny bit of loathing.

Lt. Boja, CMO

“Imagine a sudden case of a food allergy… Its designed only to cause discomfort… maybe incapacitate, but allergies can be tricky what might be hives for one person can be shock for another.”

Graham

“I of course, will be prepared for such a situation,” Satreya added. “But suffice to say the situation is… delicate at best. And it’s obviously very personal.” She sighed slightly. “I apologize if at any time I’m more… abrupt than usual. “

Lt. Boja, CMO

“You were fine doctor…” Teller offered first.

Teller Graham

Boja offered him a small smile in appreciation.

DaVinci had clasped his hands on the table in front of him while Satreya spoke. “Doctor, these ‘others’ you sense are hunting you. Were you able to tell if their intent was to harm you? Perhaps, hunting may be too strong of a word. Maybe searching, instead? Maybe they’re looking for you and are trying to get you back home to your own world, universe, time, or wherever it is you’re from?”

Colter (CIO)

“We can all hope.” Teller said. “I just don’t count on prayer to protect me.”

“It’s hard to say,”Satreya remarked. “All I know is that during my one glimpse behind the wall in my mind, there is a memory, or at least I think it’ a memory, of something terrible happening.” She sighed. “You have to remember I was really young when I first came here, and the mind is fickle. I can’t be sure of anything, including the intent of these people. Could they be friend? Yes. Could they be enemies? Yes.”

Sha listened and actually felt a twinge of sympathy for the woman. Being a half breed, she was familiar with the loneliness of being an orphan. She, herself, while she had parents, wasn’t wanted or embraced by either human or Klingon races. ‘Tolerated’ would have been the word she would have used.

What else she felt was fear. How do you protect a ship from unknowns? Unknown species, capabilities, ships… Location…

“When this meeting is over, I’d like a minute to speak with you on possible ways to protect the ship, and you, should they ‘not’ simply because looking to bring you home.” She made sure to emphasis that Satreya was definitely a priority in her desire to protect everyone.

Orphan or no, she was family now. And that meant something completely different to Sha than it did to most people.

Satreya nodded to Sha. “Of course. I think to err on the side of caution, we should assume these people- my people- could have similar abilities to my own. Which is a bit terrifying as it is interesting. But there’s a part of me that thinks it would be nice to have someone who actually knows more about them tell me how it’s all supposed to work,” she said with a idle laugh, her words more thinking aloud than anything. But she wasn’t ashamed of being so open with them, even if she generally was a very private person. She’d let them into her life, so she didn’t see it as being a big deal to let them in a little bit more. It was called personal progress.

Lt. Boja, CMO

“Will your cocktail here,” DaVinci asked pointing to the hypo, “have any effects on their TK? That is, if they have the same abilities as you do. I don’t like the idea of having my own phaser pointed at me.”

Colter (CIO)

“Theoretically, they might be even more adept that Dr. Boja. They likely come from a group that has the skills and therefore have an opportunity to practice and people to help them teach them use their skills. Conversely, I don’t think their abilities would have them counter a large number of non-telekinetic people.”

Teller Graham CSO

Boja gestured to the hypo and tried to hide the tension the question had spread through her body. “No, it doesn’t work like that. the only way to inhibit mental abilities like mine is to individually inhibit them cortically. But, if they have a reaction, their ability to focus enough would likely, perhaps even should, be compromised.”

Lt. Boja, CMO

Jarred hadn’t said too much during the time. He knew of much of this on his being friends with Boja but he couldn’t honestly have been prepared for all this. “Suppression fields can be designed, if we had to, but not sure how well they can work. It’s a rather untested field, seeing as there is not that many known telekinetic races.” Jarred suggested, but from all he knew the cortical was odds are the best path. He wasn’t liking much of the tone, but he knew everyone here would gladly help Boja and keep her safe.

Alindor, CE

“I don’t know much about telekinesis dampening fields. Might need a specialist for something like that.” He shrugged. At this point he thought they were over thinking it. But that wasn’t for him to say.

Graham

“In the end, it might just be a pipe dream. Most technology for that is limited and needs close contact. Still, we know little… and it may not be needed.”

Alindor, CE

“Is the device you have made going to have any effect on the rest of our people?” Dante asked them, “and how much of this needs to be sprayed for an effect to occur? Are we talking distribution through the air supply system as needed or direct spray from a hand held device? Do we have some kind of antidote for this if the reaction of these, people, is more severe than we expect should the need for this arise?”

Captain Knight, CO

“There should be no effect on our… people from this universe. I haven’t placed it in any mass distribution system like the environmental systems. I just have it set up in sprays, and in a portal system for doors… like the turbo-lift going to the bridge and engineering.” He paused as he looked towards Satreya. “There is no evidence to prove they are hostile… I haven’t maximized the defensive posture we could take.”

Graham

Dante nodded, “It wouldn’t do to take such a defensive position lest we encourage them, through our own behavior, to do what we suspect they might be capable of. But it is good to have a plan to fall back on if events spiral out of our control.” He looked around the table and addressed the Senior Staff again, “Dr Boja informs me that she, believes, that these, people, are within 10 light years of our current position, and possibly tracking us, or more precisely, her, at this moment. How, we do not know. Therefore I have decided to seek Them out first, and initiate contact if we can. That way, we may put them on the back foot if they assume we, or Dr Boja, is running from them and they may be more inclined to talk if their intent is indeed hostile. Do we have any comments or questions ladies and gentlemen?”

Captain Knight, CO

“While I agree with the strategy, I have to ask. When the ship pulls up in front of them, anything… interesting I should expect or have prepared?” Seamus asked. He had to protect the ship from whatever external threats came her way.
