Leaning back in his chair, Dante closed his eyes for a minute. The paperwork from the attack on Aldebaran and the subsequent destruction of the Son’a ship had been nothing short of a mountain load. Meetings with the Fleet Commanders and the stations Strategic Operations Chief had been many as they tried to ascertain what they could about potential further issues from the Son’a. All to little avail they simply needed more information.

Sitting back upright in the chair, he drained the last of his coffee and got up to make another. It was about time for the meeting he had scheduled with Teller Graham and he wanted to get a fresh cup before then. His door was unlocked, and his Senior Staff knew to simply enter when it was like that. If it was ever locked, it signalled he was in a meeting or involved in something not open to the ‘public’.

Captain Knight, CO

Teller pressed the chime despite the general open door policy. He paused for a moment out of politeness before entering and then walked before the center of the Captain’s desk before coming to a slightly less than cadet rigid parade rest in front of the Captain’s desk, chair and person. His actions probably made the fact that he was so young for a lieutenant and a department head more abundantly clear.

“Take a seat, Lieutenant.” Dante suggested as he turned and looked at the man from the replicator, a fresh cup buzzing into existence. “What do you drink? I’ve always been fond of a cappuccino myself. Sugar, hazelnut. Dr Knight is forever telling me my taste is too sweet.”

Captain Knight, CO

Graham who was mild in his coffee drinking, even thought Knight’s drink was too sugary. “I like that drink that’s half coffee and half chocolate milk. I think it’s called a mocha.” Which wasn’t much better than what the Captain ordered, on the other hand he was 23 years old and had the metabolism to match. He took the proffered seat.

Graham.

“Good choice, a mocha was my go to on Earth for many years, till I suddenly needed a bigger coffee hit.” He returned to his chair and put the cup down, before taking his seat opposite Graham. “Lieutenant, you’ve been on the Saracen for a number of years now, certainly for a time before I arrived and took the Captaincy. Where do you see yourself taking your career?”

Captain Knight, CO

“Captain,” Graham began, “I was a member of Red Squad at the academy, acted as chief science officer of the Renault for two years when she was lost in space… all before my 22nd birthday.” He paused as he took a sip of his coffee. “Given my current trajectory I plan on making Captain at a younger age than Tryla Scott.”

Teller

Bold words from a very young officer, but timidity never was rewarded in the real world.

“And Scott beat out Kirk by a year or two as well. It’s a pity she died from the Parasites in ‘64, it would have been fascinating to see where she might have taken her career. That’s a lofty target to aim for,” Dante grinned but nodded. “It’s a fair target to aim for as well, considering your experiences on the Renault and the Saracen, before and after I came on board.” Dante paused for a moment and took a sip of his own drink, then opened a drawer and brought out a small box. “Considering those goals, I think this might help.”

Teller never got a ‘promotion’ in an measured, in person, fashion. On the Renault he literally was promoted to CSO and J.G. while the bridge was on fire. For full lieutenant he got an electronic letter while on the shuttle to the Saracen. He eyes landed on the box… ‘my precious’ he thought. He wasn’t promotion hungry per-se but a young man did like shiny things.

Opening the box, he turned it around and slid it across the table to Graham. “Starfleet Command agrees that considering the experience you have gained and the expertise you have shown in your duties, it is only right to recognize your performance with this.” Inside the box was another pip, this one dark in colour. “Congratulations, Lieutenant Commander Graham, I do believe that while you might be young, you have earned the rank.”

Captain Knight, CO

Teller looked for a moment before reaching out for it. After tactilely confirming the box and the pip were indeed real he smiled. “Thank You Captain. You won’t regret this.” He stood and offered his right hand after securing the box in his left.” It would be difficult to get the Pip back now.

Graham.
