Hannah smiled slightly. She wasn’t sure that finding a special coffee blend was the best that a Star Fleet carreer could offer, but it was certainly a perk. She wondered if you could program the replicator to make coffee as good as this? Hannah was taken a bit aback by the XO’s words, this ain’t a date or whatever. She would certainly hope not. She almost spit her coffee back into her mug. She’d only been on board a few days and she certainly was not looking to ‘date’ the XO. Oh the gossip that would cause and more importantly the complications to her job. “ein lästiges Insekt” she repeated the words, though her commbadge translated it faster than yesterday. “You taught at the Academy? I don’t know if I would have the patience for that. I could barely stand being there as a cadet, I don’t think I could go back to teach.” The noise is what had bothered Hannah. Catawba was a quiet colony, and peaceful. The sound was natural and no a lot of machines. A nugget about herself? Something that was not really a secret but that might help the XO understand her as a person and an officer. “I will often take my implants off. The constant noise of the ship: the engines, the machines, and the people can be overwhelming. So when I am on my own I’ll take my implants off, just to have a break.”
Lt. j.g. Asimina, Doctor

“Understandable” he paused “I am just fine with the constant engine noise and the crew chatter. It is something I got used through time! I would really love to study such devices as I was once Chief Engineer before the Academy. Never saw such things. And yes being tutor on an Academy ship was tough but incredibly useful. I learned a lot as much as a Cadet learns when he boards for the first time an Academy ship. It was called Zeus, she was a beautiful ship similar to this for size, class and settings. Maybe a little older but still functional. I don’t know what is her faith.”

Taking the PaDD he left on the table, Yuri was distracted by a sudden notice that appeared on the screen “May you apologize me a second? Warum es ist immer mich? (why always me? -translated)” he raged in german “Right, okay.” He threw the PaDD on the table “I’m done. My sister, is a damn insubordinate Ensign. I always receive some kind of report for her bad behavior!”

Lieutenant Cdr. Yuri Scholz - Executive Officer

“Warum es ist immer mich?” she whispered to herself while the XO took care of what ever it was. She assumed it was always him because he was the XO and that came with a great deal of responsibility. “Your sister? She’s on board?” Hannah was an only child. Her parents had had difficulty in having her, and being on a colony world so far away, the medical facility was focused on more pressing matters than fertility issues among it’s inhabitants. Her parents hadn’t minded though. They always said that Hannah completed their family and they never wanted anything more. And there were plenty of children in the colony. Life had always been wonderful. When she was younger most of the children and adults learned sign language so she wouldn’t be left out of anything. They had all helped to help her parents find a way to get her her implants. It was more like a large extended family rather than a colony. That reminded her that she wanted to write home, but now that the ship had entered this…rift, or whatever it was, it would be awhile before that could happen.
Lt. j.g. Asimina, Doctor

“My sister? AH!” He chuckled loudly “I bet you not have her in here. She’s a disaster, a calamity magnet. She’s posting on another ship, the Holster. They give me reports of her behavior since my parents requested me to take care of her… I mean how the heck can I take care of her if I am here doing XO’s duties? I guess my position does not help that too. Lucky for her I love her like my other brothers. She’s the only female in family with my mother.” Sipping another bit of coffee and gazing through the space that was beyond the window, Yuri took the occasion to pause for a second and read again the report. It was stressful but he always kept promises “Anyway… you have some sisters, some brothers?” He asked the Doctor while rubbing his forhead.

Lieutenant Cdr. Yuri Scholz - Executive Officer

“That must be hard for her too. Knowing her brother has done so well, and he’s always watching. And to be the only girl.” Hannah shrugs. “I would imagine it was a little overwhelming, maybe. I have no point of reference though. I’m an only child. My parents had trouble having children and our small colony had no medical resources for such things.” She took a sip of her coffee again. “This is really good Cmdr. Thank you for sharing it with me.” Hannah watched him reread the report. “There were a lot of children on the colony though. The attitude was very much‘“it takes a village to raise a child,’ so we were more like a very large extended family on Catawba. Were you the oldest of your siblings?” Hannah stared out at the stars, wondering which one was her home. She wasn’t good with navigating by the stars and couldn’t tell one direction from the other, but she always wondered where it was in the field of view.

Lt. j.g. Asimina, Doctor

“I’m the oldest of four… gah, being old sucks, I assure you. Especially when you have little siblings, which isn’t really bad. You feel satisfied when your little brother learns something from you.” The Commander left the PaDD, this time signing the report. He wasn’t really happy about it but he could not do much as he wasn’t part of the Holster’s crew. “My sister was the last to be born… I felt in heaven when she came to the universe. A female, I thought. Pff…” he sighed looking Asimina’s wanderer and gazing face, so innocent and looking for something (in the end we all search for something) “Only years later I realized that she was a pest. Ahahaha, a sweet pest. Guess I’ll write her a good scolding letter once we return in the right Universe. Whatcha searching in that pudding of stars, galaxies and planets?”

Lieutenant Cdr. Yuri Scholz - Executive Officer

“You know, growing up,” she puts her cup down and her hands began to move in response to her words, “us girls, were always up to more than the boys were. Everyone thinks we are so sweet and can’t possibly get into trouble.” She laughs a little, “Of course there was only so much mischief we could get into on Catawba. We learned early on not to outside the safe areas.” She’d made the mistake once, before she got her implants, and it had probably taken years off her parents lives. It did hers.

“I do imagine, but perhaps you’re smarter than us ahahah!” He laughed thinking on how many stupid things he have done. Resting his cheek on his hand put on the table, he had many memories go crazy almost making him tear of nostalgia.

Hannah shook her head, “No, I think we just learn as small children to use our cuteness to our advantage. Doesn’t work so good when we grow up.”

She glances over at him at his question. She places her cupped fingers to the edge of her mouth and then moves it to a flat hand against her cheek, “Home. It’s not really home though is it? These aren’t our stars. Though if they were I wouldn’t know where to look. I’m very bad at finding location from a star ship.”
Lt. j.g. Asimina, Doctor

Joining her staring at the blank space, Yuri took time to wander and tried to guess where they were. He had pretty much a good photographic memory, this made him win once a stargazing challenge where it was asked to recognize as many star constellation known to Alpha Cent citizen and federation wide “I’m pretty good at it, let’s see… there, that should be the Orsa Major constellation. Right computer?” He did asked the shipboard computer. It took a while but then a confirmation came “Don’t ask me how I can do it,” he shrugged “it is just in my blood. If we follow the lead star and go there we should have.. Earth. Now I don’t have the exact position of Catawba I should look for stellar maps. Or you may describe me what stellar constellation you can see from there.” As the time passed a sensation of hunger came in the XO’s belly “Do you want something to eat? I am going to take a plate of waffles.”

Lieutenant Cdr. Yuri Scholz - Executive Officer

“We can see the star Polaris from Catawba, but instead of being stationary in our sky, it moves along the outside of the horizon and circles the plant throughout the year. We see the back side of Cassiopea in the winter sky and Hydra during the summer. I can navigate by the stars planet side on Catawba but I can’t seem to find it out there,” she gestures out the window of the lounge. Ever since she left for the Academy she had missed home, but was never home sick. Something about being so far away from the real Catawba and their real universe made her homesick. She had leave time built up, having not used any, she’d even volunteered during breaks while at the Academy and had built up leave that way as well. When they got back, she would make a point of going home to visit her parents and the colony that had supported her through so much.

“Ya know, I do yearly visits to my hometown. It is a nice place to visit, especially the central fountain with its plaza. Seems like a 18th Century throwback.” He told the Doctor. Then as he waited a reply for the food offer, the Commander took the chance to look for Catawba’s star and after a couple of minutes he pointed the finger in a direction “near that bright star, below the triangle formation. There’s this star in the middle which isn’t too much bright. I bet it is Catawba’s star, isn’t it computer?” Again an affirmative response came through “Bingo!”

At the offer of food, Hannah paused. The XO was a very nice person, and coffee was one thing, but should she? They had been there almost an hour and the coffee was cold now, though hers was gone. She was sure CMO Knight would not be happy with her if she caused rumors to run abound the ship. Hannah shrugged though. After the CMO she was the ranking doctor and it didn’t hurt to have a professional familiarity with the command staff. Seeing as how if Cpt Knight were medically compromised, and the CMO was his wife, it would fall to her to be able to sign off and back up CMO Knight’s orders if she should have to make a command decision concerning the captains fitness for duty. Oh good lord, isn’t that a conundrum. Hannah supposed rumor’s weren’t a big deal on this ship at this point. She nodded, “I’ll have shepard’s pie, please.”
Lt. j.g. Asimina, Doctor

“Shepard pie it is. Never tasted it tho.” Leaving the table to order the dishes, Yuri walked with a fixed thought in his mind I wonder if she feels uncomfortable, in the end I am the XO of this ship. We have a load of work to do. He remembers the fresh smell of waffles, his mother used to do it. But the smell of replicated ones was different and the taste was more ambiguous than usual. On the other hand the shepard’s pie had a more salty and soft perfume. It was probably a good choice, he thought “there you go… if I had just fresh materials and a dang kitchen… for some times I had to cook for my siblings having no replicators for years. It seems delicious anyway.” He laid down the plate for Asimina. The Commander then took the fork and gave a powerful punch to the waffles, going through the stack “You know what is even worst than replicators? Being stuck in an Alt Universe and perhaps eat rations. Bleah, rations. What is that anyway?” He pointed the finger to the pie “I see that it is not a sweet pie.”
