“Row-thur, as in Row the Boat as the boys at the Academy put it,” Rauður replied, his stoic expression dropping for a moment before returning to what he thought was his professional face.

“This will be your personal phaser,” he said, looking closely at the underside of the weapon, handing it to the officer, then writing something on the sheet. “Please confirm what I’ve written matches the serial number on the phaser, and sign for receipt.”

Rauður checked the phaser as instructed, confirmed it matched and signed for it, before putting it at his side, “understood and done.”

Ford leaned against the wall, playing with the embroidery on his wrist. “And with that out of the way, welcome to the team, Ensign. This your first posting?”

“Yes Lieutenant, fresh out of the Academy, looking to put what was learnt there into practice,” Rauður replied, taking his cue from the COS and relaxing slightly as well, “thanks for the welcome, I just hope I can put what was learnt into action and help to save the Federation. Do you have any advice for a long and successful career?”

  • Rauður Bolurson, Red Shirt

“First,” he responded, “just call me Ford. I’m the boss, I expect a lot out of you, and I can be a hardass, but our job’s hard enough without dealing with rank formalities.” He gave a half-grin before he continued.

“Yes Ford,” Rauður replied, “I’ll remember that, boss man.”

Long and successful don’t always go together in our line of work, Bolurson. Our job is to protect this ship and those aboard her; far too often that means people end up dying. But Rule 1 of Ford’s Rules of Not Dying is: Don’t Do Anything Stupid.” He pointed to a paper stuck to the wall nearby that had FORD’S RULES OF NOT DYING emblazoned across the top.

“Got it, nothing stupid, I’ll remember that,” Rauður said, “I’ll try my best to not be one of those who dies.”

“We’ll cover the rest of them later,” he continued, standing. “Do you prefer security detail or weapons duty? We have at least two officers in fire control at all times, and usually at least one security officer per deck.”

Ford he liked Bolurson already. He enjoyed the opportunity to shape fresh recruits into good officers, and this one seemed like he’d be a good addition.

“Security detail,” Bolurson replied, “it seems that weapons duty means standing around and waiting for the foe to come at us, I’d rather be a bit more proactive. But I’m happy with whatever duty you have for me, Ford. I’m flexible enough to know that we serve the Federation and sometimes that means not getting to do what we prefer. I have yet to get cleared by medical for my duty on board, permission to go do that?”

  • Rauður Bolurson, Icelandic Red Shirt

Ford stood upright and nodded. “Yep, and then…” He walked back to the desk area and lifted the clipboard he’d been looking at earlier. “Join Smithy on deck 5. He can help show you the ropes, get you familiar with the security detail.” He penciled in Bolurson’s name, then dropped the clipboard back to the desk and extended his hand. “Again, welcome to the team.”
