Thanks to his Yeoman, to who he’d never keep his head screwed on straight he had managed to put some time aside for his new second in command. Though having several fine choices in the crew to pick from Eli had been a little controversial by picking an outsider and someone who was similarly under-experienced as him. None the less he was confident of his choice. He’d sent his Yeoman to fetch the Lieutenant Commander Alder and to tell him to meet at K-5s observation bar, dress smart and prepare for a martini or two.

Taking his own advice Eli was wearing a grey three-piece suit accompanied by some brown leather shoes, a gold timekeeper and a flat cap. His Hankerchief and pipe stowed in his top right pocket the mouthpiece of which one show. He was sat at the bar and sipping on a dry martini while he waited.

Roman had only just become qualified for a first officer’s position, and he was frankly surprised that the promotion had come through this soon. The orders had come through a few weeks ago - Lt. Commander Alden to report to the USS Sentinel, CO the newly appointed Captain Elijah Carmichael. The news had raised a few eyebrows, given that the ship would be Captain Carmichael’s first but Roman had heard good things about him, and he was not worried about the Captain’s lack of experience - or his own.

Upon arriving at K-5 a young Yeoman had fetched him, giving him instructions to where to meet the Captain. And of course, what to wear. For the occasion, Roman chose his favorite suit: a high end blue blazer accompanying grey pants and sharp black loafers. He wore a lighter blue button-up and a dark blue vest underneath the blazer. He was clean shaven, his hair neatly clipped short, but by no means a buzz cut. Unwilling to keep his new Captain waiting, Roman made quick time to the observation bar.

Upon arriving, it was easy to pick out Captain Carmichael from the crowd. Roman had seen his picture, after all. He chose the direct approach, heading up to the Captain and putting out his hand for a hand shake. “Captain Carmichael, I’m Lieutenant Commander Alden, meeting as requested,” he said, introducing himself. He was surprised to find that Carmichael was nearly as tall as himself, and with impeccable style.

Eli looked at the man and had to admit, he liked the suit. “Is that a southern accent I hear and not the kind from the Americas!” It was clear as day even if the second martini was warming his cockles. “And Please call me Eli, especially when were in a bar” He waved over the barman and ordered himself another drink, “What your poison? For a station so far from Earth they manage to make the best cocktails.” Already it would appear Alden was making a good impression, one could tell by the way they dressed if they were of proper upbringing.

Roman’s smile widened. “That it is! The proper kind of southern accent, isn’t it? I grew up in Salisbury,” He said as he chose a seat next to Eli’s. “I’ll have a glass of Jameson whisky,” he told the bartender, who had the drink ready in a matter of moments. “I may have to try their cocktails another time. Bourbon has always been my go-to,” he replied. For something as nerve wracking as meeting one’s captain, Roman seemed self-assured and confident, completely relaxed and calm.

He laughed as their drinks were delivered, “Well I can respect a bourbon man for sure. So small word right? Where are you from exactly?” Elijah was glad to see the man relax he felt it necessary to have both a working and personal friendship with his second in command, he had to know him to know if he would be able to step up when he couldn’t. He sipped his drink out of the signature cocktail glass similar to an upside-down umbrella.

“Salisbury. There’s a plot of land just outside the main city, the Alden family estate,” Roman said, picturing his childhood home as he spoke. It was no palace, but a large home, with two living rooms, a large kitchen, eleven bedrooms, and nine baths, separated out between three floors and a basement. The land was quite large, and the family had a luxurious garden. They’d also had two dogs, when Roman was young. “And you?” He asked, curiously. The only thing more impressive would have been if they’d met on Earth previously.

“Amesbury, my family have several developments dotted around. My family managed to buy the rights to build on the old military Salisbury plain training area before the other big developers back in the day and it sorted us out for a few generations, though I’m the first to give Starfleet ago.” He thought for a moment, “I think I’ve passed the Alden Estate a few times, even looked at buying it once or twice I think if I recall you Grandfather is a stubborn bastard but good on him for holding onto his families estate.” Elijah didn’t really have a home he went to boarding schools before joining Starfleet, which was probably why he was the grey goose of the litter when it came to how he acted and dressed. “Is it just you or is Starfleet a family thing?”

  • Captain Elijah Carmichael

Roman had gone to boarding school as well, but only since he was thirteen. Stubborn bastard was the most accurate and honest description of Christian Alden Roman had ever heard and he couldn’t help but grin and chuckle. “That he is. He’ll never sell. Nor will my father or my brother,” he said. It had been decided long ago who the estate was to be given to, and the family had gone with the traditional eldest child. But Roman didn’t care anymore. He’d found a better legacy in Starfleet. “No, no. I am the only one in my family to pursue a career in Starfleet,” he replied. It hadn’t been a popular choice either. Roman had spent his final year on Earth living in a friend’s guest room. His choice to join Starfleet wasn’t the only reason for his excommunication, but it had been the cause, the reason for the fight that had ended in it.
