Paul uncrossed his arms and took the offered hand in his own. “They just call me Doc.” He shook it firmly and released it.

“She’s a beaut, isn’t she?” he added, nodding out the window. He looked at the lines of the hull, again fascinated by the connection he already felt with this inanimate object.

“Oh yeah.” He agreed somewhat bitterly. “ They always are. Until there not. Never get attached to a machine son. Just a random bucket of bolts that’ll keep you alive one minute and be the cause of your injuries the next. Get attached to the people instead.” He grummbled.

Ford nodded, turning back to the man. “It’s the people it makes me think of. Who will run her, who will discover great things on her…” He glanced back at the ship. “Who will die protecting her.”

Just as the crew was discussing things a ship wide and station wide announcement came out =/\= Attention all off duty ship personnel and station personnel. There will be a full scale showing of ‘Idaho Potatoes: Demystified’ today in the station’s rec hall at 0100 hours! Come see the mystery of the potato demystified inglorious 3D color and imagery! =/\= It said in a cheery tone.

Paul looked heavenward as if the voice were about him. “What on…” he muttered

Doc Hudson

Ford furrowed his brow and looked up as Doc did. “Nothing good happens at one in the morning,” he muttered, then looked back at the doctor. “Including that, it sounds like.” He shook his head.

From behind the doctor, Eli stepped onto the observation deck, the idea of a showing of ‘Idaho Potatoes’ certainly seemed interesting and maybe a good chance to meet the crew of his new ship. He noticed to the officer over by the main viewing platform and recognised at least one form the personnel files his Yeoman had shown him. Sucking in a breath he paced towards them, “Commander Hudson correct?” He held out his hand to the man who would be his chief medical officer. The Captain was wearing his fresh new uniform, also courtesy of his yeoman and his hair for a change was combed though his 9 o’clock shadow still refusing to budge. His accent heavily swayed towards a Southern British slur which was a mix between old English and Wiltshire farmer, the county he was born.

The man addressing Doc caused Ford to turn towards him. Command gold, captain’s braids, starship division insignia - it wasn’t a huge leap to assume this was their new captain. The decision hadn’t been made yet when he was looking over the crew personnel files, so he didn’t know precisely who the new cap would be, but he hoped he’d like the guy.

It would be a long assignment otherwise.

Paul surveyed the man before him, arched an eyebrow and took the offered hand in one of his own slightly scared one. He shook it. “Doctor Hudson, yes. Doc is fine if you’d prefer, never was much one for ranks and saluting. A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Captain Carmichael?” He had seen the name on a medical file a few hours ago.

Doc Hudson

Eli nodded, “Well Captain is fine when we’re on the bridge but I suppose Eli or Mike will work for me too.” The Captain looked out of the window towards the ship that was the Sentinel, his ship. “She’s certainly a fine vessel, I hear we have the fastest warp core to date.” It wasn’t entirely true all the independence class ships which had been built at the same shipyard had similarly fast engines but he hoped his Chief Engineer could do some improvements to get that little extra out of her. “Have you been on board yet?”

“I have never understood the human preoccupation with excess speed,” came a voice from behind the group. Were they to turn, they would find a tall and slender Vulcan female standing rigidly with hands behind her back. She was dressed in the regulation attire of a Starfleet engineer, although the manner with which she regularly smoothed down the skirt suggested it was not an outfit with which she was entirely comfortable.

Comfortable enough, however, to continue speaking.
“To arrive at one’s destination with minimal casualties, both biological and mechanical, is a greatly more desirable outcome than beating the other starships in the fleet.” She delivered the last half of the sentence as if it the words had been bitter on her tongue.

“Ah Lieutenant Commander T’Pria, come now even a Vulcan can appreciate the ability to be the first there or get somewhere quicker?” Eli said with a smile, “Besides wheres your sense of competition, you’re telling me that you’d happily sit in first gear while the rest of the fleet run in sixth?” Eli hadn’t dealt much with Vulcans but he had heard they were infuriatingly logical about everything and had very little in terms of emotions.
