She had already been cleared for duty upon leaving Starfleet HQ and submitted regular medical self-certifications to the Vulcan council for Federation Co-operation. So why she must also subject herself to a physical examination by the Sentinel’s own medical chief was merely one more irrational and nonsensical human request that, in the interest of ‘social cohesion’ she would silently endure.

Or perhaps not all that silently…

Entering the medical bay for the first time, the young woman cast an emotionless gaze over the various staff members currently on duty. Then, when she failed to visually locate Commander Hudson she cleared her throat and called out “Each of us operates on a precise and regimented schedule, so it seems only logical to dispense with all meaningless preamble and get immediately to business. Please inform Commander Hudson that I am here for my physical examination and that every minute further I stand here waiting is time that none of us will have the opportunity to relinquish on more important matters.”

One of the medics looked up, smiled and yelled “Doc! visitor for you, seems impatient!”

From the back of sickbay Paul walked towards the noise, frowning and cleaning his glasses as he came. “Yeah well everyone’s impatient and everyones got somewhere to be.” spotting T’Pria he put his glasses back on and glowered at the chief engineer. “What can we do for you?” he asked and folded his arms, the scars evident in the light crisscrossing up into the short sleeves of the tunic he wore.

Doc Hudson

“Indeed they have,” the Vulcan offered reply to a comment not made for her, before addressing the comment that was with, “And you can do me a physical evaluation, if that is not too much to ask?”

Paul raised one eyebrow. “Oh?” He asked

Without invite she selected an empty biobed and settled herself upon it, although her posture remained alert, curious impatience too potent for her eyes to cease scanning the room.
“Commence with your scans please, Doctor,” she ordered.

He watched her get herself comfortable, raised both eyebrows and said “oh I think we’ll let you finish your own scanning first.” He picked up a tricorder probe. “You seem to want this over and done with awful fast.” He commented as he began scanning.

Max felt the eyes on her as she was kneeling over some supplies, completing the scans of each one. She looked back at the CE for an instant, a quizzicle look in her eye, but then returned to the task at hand.

The Vulcan raised herself up on one elbow and returned Nurse Church’s gaze.
“Am I the first Vulcan you have encountered, Nurse?” she asked without implication or accusation, although her tone sharpened a little as she laid back down and added, “I would have expected my people to be far more commonplace on Federation vessels by now. Most certainly you humans could benefit from our intelligence. And our control.”

“No, Ma’am,” Max replied, “not the first one. I thought you may have wanted me for something. I’m ready to serve if you do, ma’am. No disrespect was meant. If you’ll excuse me, I’ve got more scanning to do.”

Max returned to her scanning

Then shifting her gaze to Hudson, she stated, “Do not mistake my urgency for anxiety or fear, Doctor. I am merely aware of the significance of other tasks in my schedule above this one. As I am sure the same can be said for yours.”
