Rand had been dismissed by the captain. She was slightly disappointed, she had hoped she’d get to see the Sentinel go to warp, but she gave a mental shrug. She did wait by the turbolift for Randy however. Part of her duties was training him and so she waited for him and watched to see if there was anything else she could tell him to help. But Randy didn’t really need to be ‘trained,’ he was excellent at whatever he did, and he handled the XO’s gruffness with his usual easy going nature. She stopped by their quarters so they could process and then return the reports the CO and XO had signed off on.

Randy dutifully reported by his sister’s side and headed down with her to their quarters. Figuring the pair was the only ones who would understand Gaelic because thankfully the combadge didn’t exist yet and the universal translator was something that was on ship to ship communications, rather than person to person. He leaned over and said, “Tha sgeulachd agam ri innse” Which roughly translates to ‘I have a story to tell’. He waited till they were in their quarters before saying, “I heard that down in the mess hall the cook wanted to sprinkle something special on the dish of a crew member he fancied, well it turns out that instead of the Klingon aphrodisiac, he grabbed a Klingon fire spice! Crewman Gabrielle was in-between the restroom and sickbay all day!”

Rand shook her head, “That’s awful. I hate to laugh, but poor Gabrielle, and the cook! And you know what I want to know? How did he get Klingon anything? It’s not like we are on trading terms with the empire. Oh he better be sure he doesn’t get caught, but if he knows what’s good for him he’ll clearly label his spices next time.”

“There was this trader, Muddy I think? Who sold it to him for a pretty penny!” Randy quiped.

“We’ve got a medical check-in today.” She sounded strained. “I suppose the CMO will have questions about the other night in the observation lounge.” She picked up a canister from the table, tipped her head back and squeezed: Cheese Whiz! The best kind of cheese there was. Rand ate Cheese Whiz the way some people ate whipped topping. Rand set the canister back on the table, straightened her uniform and took a deep breath. She glanced at the uniform tartan that Randy had disguarded the previous day. “I wonder if I could get away with wearing my sash and brooch?”

Scowling at his sister with a faint smile he said, “Miranda Arabella Blair Elizabeth Scarlett Farquharson! I know we are in the middle of space but for the love, somehow, and I mean somehow you’ll attract ants! How did you even get that stuff onboard?” Randy was furious! Well, mock furious, but still furious! Every time they shared a room, a living area, Rand would leave out food and there would be a colony of ants that would find their way in. He kept up the glare before he broke into a giggle and said, “Alright Rand you can only wear your sash and brooch if I can bring my bagpipes!”

“Okay, okay!” she capped the Cheese Whiz and put in the modern day version of an ice box. “And we’re in space! No ants. And for the record the last time I caused ants in our room we were 9! So don’t you Miranda Arabella Blair Elizabeth Scarlett Farquharson me Randall Oyne Tavish William Ian Farquharson!” She picked up her sash sitting on her bedside table running her fingers over the clan brooch. “Ah well, maybe tomorrow. I’ve got to work the rose fold into it first. And you are welcome to play your bagpipes at any time. I miss hearing you and Dad play.”

Randy feigned shock “Pulling out all my names today? Ge bith dè.” He smiled, again before saying, “And what an impact it had on little Randal it seems!” He said looking over at the instrument he had on the stand and he changed his tone a little, “I miss playing with him too.”

Rand grinned. “Do you miss playing with him or all the female attention it brought?” She waggled her eyebrows at him. Her mother was very fond of telling how she among all the girls had caught their father, and how devilishly charming he was and on and on. Their father has taken great pride in teaching those skills to his son.

Stepping off the turbolift on deck 9 Rand turned to starboard following the long hall way around to the aft port section where sickbay was located. She stopped suddenly and knelt down, picking up a single red rose petal. She held it up for Randy to inspect and made a “shushing” gesture. She entered sickbay and looked around. Hushed noises and a sudden stillness about the area said perhaps no one was expected. Ah food for the gossip mill!
Yeoman Rand

“Oh I wonder if that’s the cook trying to make it up to Gabrielle.” He said quietly as they walked, quieting himself before entering alongside her.

En Randy

Rand looked around and held a finger up to her mouth and listened. She nodded her head vigorously. She walked back over to Randy whispering, “Oh he feels awful. He’s really groveling and she’s still sick.” And the sounds coming from the other room only proved how sick she still was. She pointed toward the other door and the main med bay. “Remind me to not attract the chef’s attentions.”

She looked around and nodded to a nurse. “Ensigns Miranda and Randal Farquharson for our physicals.”
Yeoman Rand

Max nodded back at the Yeoman. She put abox down and looked at Miranda and then Randal.

“You,” she said to Randal, “in there, get up on the biobed, we’ll get to you shortly.

Randy raised an eyebrow before shrugging and saying to Rand, “Looks like we’re in a no-nonsense medical facility.” He looked back at the nurse and saluted, “Yes Ma’am”

Doing as he was told, Randy made his way in and hopped up on the bio bed, kicking his legs back and forth like a young boy might.

“Well then, what have we here?” asked a voice, and then the curtain was drawn, cutting Randy off from the rest of sickbay. The voice belonged to a crewmember with a shaved head and so many lines on her body it seemed that some of her lines had lines of their own. She was also almost nothing more than skin and bones. Like the younger members of the crew, she was dressed in the miniskirt, but she looked very uncomfortable in it.

She looked Randy up and down, and said, “well, I’m waiting for you young whippersnapper. I don’t have all day. The days I have left to serve are likely shorter than the length of this skirt I’m forced to wear. Your name? Your rank? Once upon a time, I probably looked good in a mini, but nowadays, not so much. Eyes up here, young man, not down there.”

It was probably just as good for Randy she had a medical tricorder at hand and not a stick …

Randy was delighted. Old folks were fantastic and she had an attitude that was positively fantastic! “Randal Farquharson, Ensign, and ma’am I don’t care how you think you look, but I have to say you look smashing. You just need to feel comfortable with yourself. I mean look at me, if I can make the mini look good, honey there is no reason you need to be uncomfortable.” Randy had no idea if she was going to accept his praise or not but he smirked, “Need me to just lie here or are we doing any active participation with this?”

“Miranda, Ensign, Yeoman,” Max said, “I’m Nurse Maxine Church, you can call me Max if you like. So, how have things been for you since your last medical? Any changes in diet? Any injuries or incidents that should be added to your file?”

Randal, Yeoman

Rand liked her matter of fact attitude. It reassured Rand and put her at ease. Friendly but not personable. She was the medical professional and Rand was the patient. Nice and clear. “I go by Rand. And no nothing new to add to the file. My diet is probably a little off. New CO and new schedule and routine to adjust to, but I don’t think it’s caused anything out of the ordinary.”
Yeoman Rand

“Oh, of course, Rand, hope the captain and XO aren’t causing you and Randal too many difficulties with their drinks orders,” Max replied, “make sure you get enough sleep and watch the diet. We’ve got a new chef on board and …” she was interrupted by the sound of vomitting from the next session “… let’s just say that apparently his methods aren’t the best. I think I’ll be sticking to the synthesized food for the time being, at least until he stops experimenting.” Max smiled as she said that, “still though, I wouldn’t like to be that crewmember.”

“That’s all from me, Rand,” Max replied, “I’ll get a doctor to close off on your file and rescue Randal from my colleague.” Max turned and looked around sickbay, “Any Doctors free? Yeoman’s boarding physical should be right for signoff.”

After a response, Max walked towards the closed curtains, and opened them and surveyed the scene.
