After his Medical Check-in and before putting the snakes in their new terrarium, George headed up to the Bridge, thinking it would be most reasonable to find the Science Chief/XO there. He stepped out of the turbolift, tub of snakes tucked firmly under his arm, and glanced around. He knew he was looking for a brunette man in blue. Spotting the man, and checking his sleeves to make sure he was the right man, the scientist stepped over and lifted his free hand to a salute.

Roman stood at the science station, looking at readouts for something he was studying. Some kind of energy, it seemed. As Anderson approached, he hardly looked up, giving the Ensign but a glance.

“Lt. Commander Alden? Ensign George Anderson, reporting for duty, Sir,” he spoke, waiting for Alden to notice him.

Anderson, Sci/Sec

“Ah, Ensign Anderson. I had heard we’d be getting a new scientist,” said Alden, still not looking away from his work. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught a glimpse of Anderson’s tub of snakes. “Are those… snakes?” He asked, finally looking up to see them.

The bin was opaque plastic, but the lid was ajar. George glanced down to see that Clark was pressing against the lid of his smaller container within the larger bin. “Yessir. My snakes. I thought you’d want me to report for duty before I spend a couple hours making sure their terrarium is set up properly, and I didn’t feel confident in leaving them unattended in the bin, sir.”

“I’ve always loved Herpetology, been collecting snakes and reptiles since I was a kid. I left the rest of my reptiles back on Earth, but I had to bring someone with me… so I chose the Garters.”

Anderson, Sci/Sec

He nodded. As a biologist, Roman did know quite a bit about reptiles. Garters had venom, but not enough to harm anyone with. He’d never known anyone who kept them as pets, but he knew for some odd reason some liked doing so. “Keep them out the way, I’m sure no one will mind them,” he said.

“They don’t bite. That’s why I brought these guys and not my hognoses. Neither species is venomous, but hognoses like to pretend they are,” George said with a smile, glancing into the tub for a moment before shutting the top properly. “But yeah. We’ve already seen one adverse reaction. I think Nurse Church nearly fainted.”

Getting back on topic, Roman said, “What’s your scientific specialty?”. After the snake thing, he half expected another Biology major, or perhaps an ecologist. But Roman saw value in nearly any scientific field.

“Biology and exobiology, specifically in the field of microbiology,” he answered, “Although I dabble in Biochemistry as well, given the chance.”

Anderson, Sec/Sci

“Another biologist!” Roman said, lighting up just a bit. “I am not much into microbiology myself but I have studied the field of biochemistry. My original specialty was a branch of biological anthropology dedicated to alien biological anthropology.” Having started out disinterested, it seemed Anderson had caught Roman’s interests. He could talk for days about these things.

There was a grin on George’s face when he heard that. It was being like a kid in a candy store when JO and DH had similar specialties. “If you’re into Biochem, did you read Dr. Askit’s paper last month on the theory and practical application of gene expression and protein folding in the study of biochemical similarities between species?”
