Marcus accepted the handshake and followed his new Department Head out into the armory. The Ensign chuckled to himself in response to the question, “Bit of a happy accident in all honesty Lieutenant. When I was younger, an incident involving two Starfleet officers and a phaser set on maximum stun! After several profuse apologies and a few interesting questions, I realised that I was intrigued by the kind of things Starfleet gets up to. I signed up for the Academy as soon as I was eligible and have been training in Security ever since, though I do dabble in Engineering when the need arises.”

-Ensign Marcus Anders: Security-

Ford opened the locker as Marcus answered, removing one of the phasers within and a clipboard hanging on the inside door. He flipped the phaser over, reading something from the bottom and writing on the clipboard. He handed the clipboard and phaser over. “Please double check that matches the serial number on the phaser and sign for receipt,” he said. “Maximum stun? That’s never fun, for anyone. Were you the one hit?”

COS Ford

Marcus signed off on his phaser as he holstered it and continued the story with a small grin rising on his face, “Serial number checks out sir, would you believe I was the one who fired? I mistook a conversation between two officers as one of them being attacked.” At Fordham’s slightly quizzical look, Anders quickly added, “I was only 11 at the time, I’ve become a better shot with training.”

-Ensign Marcus Anders: Security Officer-

Ford paused, turning with a crooked eyebrow. “… that only leads to more question, Anders.” He hung the clipboard up as he continued. “Like whose phaser was it? And then, either how did you have a phaser at eleven or how awful were these security officers that an eleven year old managed to get a phaser off of one of them.” He shook his head.

“But never mind,” he said, shaking his head. “Do you prefer patrol or fire control duty?”

COS Ford

Anders grinned nervously, “My family are known for acting on instinct, I shall endeavour to ensure it doesn’t get the better of me while serving with you Lieutenant. May I ask, what’s fire control duty?”

-Ensign Marcus Anders: Security Officer-

Ford considered for a moment. “Instinct can be good,” he said, “as long as it doesn’t lead to something stupid.” He tapped a paper taped to the wall, with FORD’S RULES OF NOT DYING across the top. Right next to his finger:

  1. Don’t Do Anything Stupid

He held it there for a brief moment before he began walking across the room. “Walk with me.”

“We are responsible for the safety and protection of 120 plus souls aboard this vessel. This includes the protection of them onboard, as well as the ship’s offensive capabilities.” They stepped into the turbolift and he grabbed a handle, waiting for Anders to do the same. “Deck 8,” he announced. The ride down three decks was short, and he didn’t speak again until they exited, and then almost immediately he stopped at a doorway, entering in a code on a 10-key keypad beside the door.

“This is fire control,” he said as they entered, two operators looking up from their stations, and then back down. “When the captain orders the ship to fire phasers, that command comes through here.” He tapped a comm speaker on the wall. “And then we execute the targeting and firing instructions. We have up-to-the-second sensor scans of the immediate vicinity of the ship,” he pointed at a display before one of the technicians, “indicating whether the fore or aft banks will hit that target.”

“Questions?” he asked the young ensign.

COS Ford

Marcus marvelled at the sight of the technology before him, but decided as he often did that getting his hands dirty was more his style of Security. He made a mental note of Ford’s rules, or rather rule and smiled at the Lieutenant, “Nothing that I can think of sir, but I think patrol duty might be more my style of work.”

-Ensign Marcus Anders: Security Officer-

Ford eyed him before nodding. “Noted, though I will expect you to do an occasional rotation through. I need all of my people capable of stepping into any role.” His jaw clenched. “You never know it might be necessary.”

They left the room, heading back to the lift. “For now, I want you on guard duty near the galley on deck 9; the deck supervisor is NLieutenant Simmons. Hand to hand training, which is mandatory,” he glanced at Anders out of the corner of his eye, “is at 1800 in the training room, with additional open classes at 1700 in the gymnasium. You must attend at least 3 of those classes per week. You are expected to put in at least one hour of phaser training per week on the range.” The lift stopped and they exited on deck 9.”

He turned then and leaned his shoulder against the wall. “I have a lot of rules,” he said, “but I’m an easy guy to get along with as long as you follow them. Questions now?”

COS Ford

“I’m ready to learn Lieutenant,” Anders responded quickly, “I look forward to working with you, but I don’t have any pressing questions.”
