Randy’s lecture - reminiscent of old times - had caused Alden to relax his no food in the lab rule. “Here will be good. Though our new Captain has taken over her duties, I still have much to catch up on,” he said, stifling a yawn, “Fantastic. I believe I may be near finished studying the lizard’s poison.” He hadn’t had time for his research project in recent weeks. He had become too busy with administrative and command duties, and so the only thing he’d had time for was to feed and care for the animals. Now that they had a new Captain, he could go back to doing his research.

Rand nodded and wrote down the last bit of observations and slipped out the door. She returned moments later and moved carefully along the edge of the lap to the far corner. Rand was never comfortable sharing a meal or shudder a drink with a superior officer. However it was one of the things she had to do. Working meals were a common occurance for yeomen. Setting the food down Rand grabbed her PaDD and waited for Alden. “Her are the lab updates. Astrometrics is still claiming a malfunction with the main sensor array. Engineering has checked it again and says there is nothing wrong.”

“And here are the potential new science officers that command sent for you to choose from for the current science vacancies.”

“I’ll have to take a look at it,” Roman said, about the sensor. He skimmed the lab updates, planning to do a more thorough read later. He was quite used to the timid way Rand shared meals, sitting in the farthest corner of the lab. At first he’d thought it was.. a little strange. But he didn’t really mind anymore. And then she handed him the files of potential new science offers, and he let out an irritated sigh. His least favorite chore was looking for potential officers. “Lovely. I’ve got my work for the day, then?” He said to Rand.

Little known to Alden, Rand had actually picked the furthest corner because she was trying to keep the food away from any experiments or equipment and avoid accidents. Did sitting in the farthest corner away from having to talk to people influence her decision on location? Yes it did, but in this case it was secondary to the safety of the lab. “I know you loathe these personnel issues. Command sent a choice of 100 applicants. I reviewed who left, their skills, and performance reviews, and narrowed down the list to 5 applicants per position. So that is 20 total because you have 4 positions you must fill. Though command did say you could take on 2 or 3 additional officers at your discretion.” As they ate she went over each of the applicants with Alden. Rand had chosen excellent canidates for each position, top in their fields, some newer with excellent references from the Academy, some established officers who had extensive experience and had made names for themselves, some Alden may have heard of before.

As Alden looked over the applicants with Rand, he commented on them. Not that one, Roman had worked with him previously and they had personality conflicts. That one looked promising. He’d heard of this one, but he’d never worked with them. This one studied the same field as him. That one he’d heard of, and she was very experienced in her field. That one used to be a doctor, he must have switched specialties. A recent academy graduate had very promising records and a letter of recommendation from a professor Alden was familiar with. This one had been on a ship for a while, but he already had an award for his work. Rand had certainly chosen the cream of the crop.

Rand made note of Alden’s comments and then at the end she compiled his choices and had him sign off on them. Rand finished the last bite of the toast on her plate. Then she passed Alden the last paper work. “This is the next list of supplies for the science department. Just check it over and sign off if it’s correct. And then that’s it for today. With Cpt Rogers here, you’re back to your normal amount of paper work, Cmdr.”

Yeoman Rand

He signed the supply list after checking it over. “Thank goodness, then I can get back to work that actually means something,” he said. Training staff, studying, looking after animals. He deemed pretty much anything more important than paperwork. “Speaking of, I forgot to thank you for the save in the transporter room…”

Rand took the signed supply list, added it to the ones from the other departments and with a few deft taps and swipes and flips on the PaDD she had them all complied together for Cpt Roger’s signature. Rand looked flustered, “Oh, umm you don’t have to thank me.” She was doing her job. That sounded a little cold, but from Rand it was just genuine. Her job was to support the captain and first officer of the ship. She did it because she was good at it, she enjoyed it, and in this case she genuinely respected Alden as first officer. “I’m just glad I was able to help.” Movement caught her eyes, and there was Mushu staring at them, both front feet on the glass. “I’m glad you’ll be able to get back to work. Mushu has noticed your absence, I think. His eyes have not stopped waving in your direction. Is there anything else I can do here before I take the morning reports to Cpt Rogers?”
