Shirley sat at her desk reviewing the mission briefing on her PaDD from Commodore Zwicky, she heard her door chime which led to her setting the PaDD down and to the side on her desk as she turned her head to glance in the direction of the entrance to her quarters, “Come in.” Her voice was firm and she had high hopes that her new yeoman brought her water to drink and not anything acidic in the middle of the night. Shirley had always suffered from heartburn and acid reflex when drinking those types of of drinks on an empty stomach in the middle of the night. She felt bad for waking both of them up, but this is Starfleet, and Starfleet officers do what is required of them in a valiant effort to successfully deliver results each and every day.

As soon as he heard the go-ahead, Roman stepped into the captain’s quarters. “Good morning, Captain. Our presence was requested?” He asked. He felt the need to yawn, but made himself not. He was tired, that did not need to be on display. He took a sip of the tea Rand had prepared. In typical British fashion, tea was usually Roman’s drink of choice, certainly so in the wee hours of the morning when he’d rather still be sound asleep. If Starfleet Command had decent hours, Rand probably wouldn’t have turned into a tomato in his quarters.

Rand followed Alden in and she walked over to the Cpt and handed her the insulated water bottle. “Ice water this morning, Cpt.” She gave Shirley the same once over, politely and softly cleared her throat to get the Captain’s attention and then tapped a finger to her own side. The buckle of the wrap style shirt wasn’t clasped all the way and Rand would not reach out and fix that with others in the room. Then, remembering how early it was Rand gave herself a subtle once over as well. She tugged at her sleeves, took a sip of her coffee, set it down on the nearest safe surface, lifted her PaDD and grabbed the stylus to take notes.

Information packets were listed as follows with tags for certain department focus:

  1. –General Mission Orders (All Departments)

  2. –The Abyss Survey Probe Data (All Departments)

  3. –Possible Planetary Observations (Science)

  4. –Possible Intelligent Life Observations (Medical/Security)

  5. –The Abyss Effects On Ship Systems (Engineering)

A slight smile spread across Shirley’s lips as Roman and Rand entered her quarters and greeted her. Her eyes casually shifted back and forth between the two officers to acknowledge the two of them, “Good Morning Ensign and Number One. I apologize for the wake up call in the middle of the night, but as you should both know by now, Starfleet never sleeps.” She reached out and took the insulated water bottle, “Thank you for thinking of me Ensign.” After that she raised the bottle to her lips and drank the ice cold water in a polite manner, “Dry mouth is irritating in the middle of the night, fortunately you solved it. Well done Yeoman.” Shirley set the bottle down on her desk and looked over her computer screen for a moment studying the basic outline she had created of the mission. She did not have the most adequate amount of time to completely prepare in 15 minutes, but had enough information to break down the pivotal points to get her crew moving forward and execute her orders. She pressed a few buttons organizing the assignments for each department along with the Abyss survey probe data and pressed the send key to deliver her plan to Roman for him to have the crew execute and copied the information to Rand as well so that she could deliver the information to the respective departments.

Shirley leaned back in her seat and looked up at Rand and Roman as she clasped her hands in her lap, “Alright, so I hope that you enjoyed your brief stay in the Sol system because we are departing by 05:00 this morning per the orders of Commodore Zwicky. Our destination is known as ‘The Abyss’ which is a massive stellar nebula that spans across several light years. The Exploration Command wants the Sentinel to be stationed in the area to study the nebula, seek out intelligent life, and find systems with potential resources that could be beneficial for Starfleet.”

Shirley paused for a moment as she lifted her bottle and took another sip of the water. The fresh lemon and lime flavor soothed her taste buds as the flavor was simple, but so addicting at the same time. She set her drink back down on her desk and naturally made supporting hand gestures throughout her communication with the two officers that correlated well with her assignments, “At warp factor seven, we will arrive there in a week’s time. That will provide us with the opportunity to study the data that was recovered from the initial research probes during our trek there. I have sent the probe data to both of your PaDDs so that it can be delivered to and discussed with the Department Heads.”

She paused to look over the bullet points on her computer screen that she had listed as her meeting notes for a brief moment. Afterwards, she continued delivering her plan, “Here are the assignments that need to be executed during our travel period to the Nebula. Ensign, I want you to deliver the general information orders and the Abyss probe data to every department to study. Number One, I want you to go over the mission with the Department Heads and provide each department with the following assignments. I want your science team to observe planets within the Nebula and sort out which of them have the highest potential to support life or possess natural resources that would be viable for Starfleet to utilize effectively. I want the Medical team to be prepared to tend to or operate on any already known intelligent life in the area to ensure readiness for potentially new patients. For the security team, I want them to review the Prime Directive and First Contact Protocols to ensure that they follow the proper procedures to the letter. We can not afford to risk having any unnecessary incidents with any first contact species. With that being said, as a precaution they will still need to prepare for any potential threats with combat situational training exercises and they must understand that they must only use hostile force as the absolute final resort with my approval. Finally, for the engineering team, I need them to study the Abyss nebula’s potential effects on the ship. Nebulas can be extremely tricky and dangerous if we are not on our ‘A’ game. I need them to be proactive in studying the potential effects of the nebula on the Sentinel’s systems and not reactive so that when we arrive we are adequately prepared to journey forward confidently into the Abyss.” Shirley paused to allow Rand and Roman to absorb the information for a moment before she concluded with, “Did you have any questions or concerns?”

Rand was busy taking notes on the captain’s orders. Quick short hand. She’d move it to the computer and send out the compiled information from her notes and the data the captain sent her. She looked up shaking her head, “No ma’am.”

“Yes, ma’am, I can arrange that meeting to happen within the next hour,” Roman replied. Study the planets in the nebula, give the assignments to the other departments. Checking his PaDD, he made sure the orders had successfully transferred. “Is there anything specific we’re looking for, or are we generally gathering information?” He asked.

~ Lt Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO

Shirley tilted her head slightly and had an expression of interest in what her first officer was seeking clarification on as she listened to Roman’s question, “I want you to find any available information from the probes that you can possibly acquire. We will be in deep space with no nearby ships in the vicinity to bail us out if we have any problems. I need everyone to be on point in their research methods to help ensure that we have a successful mission. Does that clear everything up for you Number One?” She reached for her glass and took another sip of her water and then set it back down on her desk as she awaited Roman’s response.

  • Captain Shirley Rogers, CO

“It does. I will update the department heads, thank you Captain,” Roman replied. He slipped his tea, still tired as it was still quite early.

~ Lt Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO

Shirley clasped her hands together as she looked up at Roman with an expression of confidence on her face, “Alright Number One, go now and execute the plan. I will see you on the bridge at 05:00. You are dismissed.”

  • Captain Shirley Rogers, CO

Rand nodded, did a very impressive about face and left the captain’s quarters after being dismissed and headed straight for the small office down the corridor.
