“Oh, it’ll be fun. There aren’t very many people up there,” she insisted as she led Rand to the recreation hall. When they got there, Scott was happy to find that she was right, and not many people were there yet. But she knew it would probably start filling soon. “Look! There’s billiards, battleship, even ping-pong!” She said. “Is there anything you like to do?”

~ NEnsign Scott

Billiards and ping pong was just too crowd drawing. “Umm..battleship?” Rand had played before as a kid. And it was only two players, so no extra people, right? “What do you usually do?”

“Battleship is fun!” Scott said, pulling out the two plastic boards one was meant to play on. She handed Rand one and sat at a table. Then, she opened it and started sorting the little white and red pieces, and placing the little plastic ships. “I used to play it a lot, when I was a kid,” Scott said as she did.

Engineering Crewman Murphy stood in front of the case of board games, staring down several of the boxes with intense concentration. Snapped out of her thought by NEnsign Scott stepping past her and grabbing a copy of battleship, she watched the ensign return to another woman and place it down. Oh, there were already two players. She looked around, everyone else seemed super busy. And already engaged in games and instruments and other recreational activities. She turned to the pair and slowly made her way over, freezing slightly if either one of them glanced in her direction.

Rand began setting up her own board. “My brother and I used to play a lot. Battleship, checkers, chess, cards, backgammon, dominoes, mastermind.” Randy’s friend Arvin always played winner. She wondered how Arvin was doing now. Seeing movement she looked up, “Murphy right? Do…would you like play? I’m horrible at this game.”

Yeoman Rand

Scott looked up as well and said, “How about Murphy plays the winner? Or you can play first and then Rand can play the winner. That way we all get turns?” She finished setting up her board. “Alright, I’m ready!”

E’usah entered the Rec. facility and immediately spotted a ping-pong table that was vacant, grabbing a paddle she kicked off her sandals and looked around, “Anyone want to play ?” She and her siblings played this terran game often, and she was quite good. “Caitian junior champion here, challenging anyone.”
She made sure her braid was secured and picked up a ball, rolling it on the tables surface with her paddle to ensure it wasn’t cracked.

“T-that sounds good to me,” Murphy muttered, stepping over to sit at the table perpendicular to the two of them so she could watch the match. It was awkward. She jumped slightly in response to E’usah’s offer, but kept her attention on the battleship game.

Rand looked at the blank board and remembered playing early games with her father. She called out her first move, going back and forth, missing and hitting and taking hits as they went. Rand concentrated totally on the game, not comfortable making small talk with more than one person at a time.

Carla, the day shift cook, walked in and over to the ping pong table. “Knew there had to be some people coming in here sooner or later. You up for a game Ensign?” she asked E’usah while she picked up one of the extra paddles and tapped it on the table and spinning it around in her hand.

E’usah bounced the ball easily on her paddle, “Always looking for a good game, and it’s just E’usah off duty. Do you want to P-O-N-G for serve or are ready to start ?” E’usah dug her toes into the matting and grasped her paddle in a two finger and thumb grip. “I promise I won’t use my tail for odd shots,” she grinned, then realized it looked more like a snarl to the uninitiated.

E’usah - NAV

Scott did the same, calling moves, and missing and hitting. Her strategy was to pick out the remaining spaces that looked big enough for Rands remaining ships, and call the numbers in those spots. It usually worked well for her, but in this game, they were neck and neck.

~ NE Scott

Rand’s strategy was to section the larger grid into smaller sections and then hit the middle of each and then progress outwards. They were mostly neck-n-neck. It was going to come down to who found the last ship first. Rand still had to find the 2 square destroyer, which left her with a lot of options to choose from.
