The turbolift doors had opened with a whish sound as Shirley and the bridge based Department Heads stepped onto the bridge. She had looked over her bridge crew for a moment before stating with firmness in her voice, “Everyone take your stations, we are about to undock.” She approached her chair and took a seat crossing her legs at her shins. Her eyes scanned the for the ship wide communications intercom switch. Shirley found and activated the button, “Attention Sentinel Crew, this is your Captain speaking. We are about to embark on our journey into the Abyss. The estimated time of arrival is one week. Work with your department heads as their is plenty of work to complete in the meantime in preparation for our exploratory mission as week seek out new life and supplies in this unknown region of space. Rogers Out.”

Shirley’s finger released from the switch as she looked in the direction of her helmsman, “Ensign Dagget, I want you to go ahead and undock the Sentinel. Keep her steady as she goes please.” Shirley turned her head slightly to look at E’usah the Sentinel’s navigator sitting in front of her, “Ensign E’usah, plot a course to the Abyss.”

E’usah had already downloaded the coordinates for the Abyss provided by Star Fleet and now fed them into the nav computer. She checked a couple of calculations then turned to the captain, “Course is plotted and ready to send to the helm ma’am.” She reached out with a furred finger and pressed an icon on her console, “Course is sent to helm, we’re ready to depart on your command.” E’usah watched as the space dock slowly receded under Quinn’s commands to the helm, they would soon be on their way to parts unknown and places unseen.

Quinn slid her hands onto the manual controls and tried her best not to physically wiggle from excitement. She was at the controls to one of the most advanced ships in the fleet. It was incredible. “Releasing Docking Clamps…” Quinn felt the small shudder of the ship as it transitioned into free flight, then tapped in the command to send them drifting away from the dock and towards the open stars. Her foot began to tap rapidly against the floor as she steadily piloted the Sentinel away from dock.

With a soft hum and slight thump the Sentinel leapt to warp for the Abyss at their current speed it would indeed take about a week to get there.

E’usah watched as the dock disappeared and the ship turned to the designated heading, then it seemed to her.... instantly, they were at warp and speeding away. She checked her read outs on the nav console and confirmed all was as it should be. She turned slightly towards the Captain, “Course and speed are correct ma’am”, she then glanced at Quinn and quietly mouthed, “Nice work.”

Quinn turned to the woman who was probably her only friend on the ship and grinned, giving a subtle thumbs-up. “You too,” she mouthed, turning back to the console. The tap-tap of her foot on the floor transitioned to a slightly slower frequency as one of her favorite songs began to run through her head. “Mr blue sky, please tell us why,” she muttered musically, her shoulders dipping with the rhythm of the music she sang to herself. Helm was a little boring when they were in warp. Not much to do but monitor their heading and speed.
