The small shuttlecraft banked to port as it came in on approach to the Sentinel’s shuttle bay. As it slowly and carefully made its way inside, the shuttle’s only passenger looked out the viewscreen past the pilot. He had said barely ten words in the almost twenty hours that he had been in the shuttle. Then was no different, although he did give the pilot a look and a small nod. Stooped almost double, the obsidian-skinned human dressed in the gold uniform of Command picked up a large bag made of some kind of animal hide and stood waiting for the hatch in the side of the shuttle to open. As it did, he stepped out and stood up straight.

He was an imposing figure at over two meters tall and very solidly built. Muscles rippled under the uniform top as he moved. His head was shaved and his skin as black as the space the Sentinel currently traveled through. Dark reddish-brown eyes peered from a handsome face that seemed to be in a perpetual scowl. He surveyed the area and then began walking towards the door.

The man was huge and built and towered over her. And that’s probably why he walked right past her where she stood waiting for the newest officer to disembark. Rand stood at 5‘8”, average, but small compared to this man. She was young, barely a year out of the Academy, but to have already made ‘captain’s yeoman’ was beyond impressive. Her long red hair was pinned into a neat and regulation approved bun, her gold uniform crisp and her boots shinned. Her stride made a clean crisp staccato across the bay floor as she caught up with him, not quite jogging, but close in order to meet his longer stride, but it didn’t seem to phase her. Rand was a cross country runner, with the build, tone, and endurance to go with it. “Lieutenant Mthunzi Nkosenye, welcome to Sentinel. Ensign Rand Farquharson, Captain’s Yeoman. If you would sign here, indicating you’ve arrived and are aware you’ve been assigned to the ship.” She passed him a PaDD with a stylus. Some paper work was so infuriatingly pointless, but it wasn’t her job to question why they had it, just to get it filled out.

Nkosenye stopped and looked down. Wordlessly, he took the PaDD and signed as indicated and handed her back the instruments.

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a grey data disk. “Cpt Rogers asked me to give you that, and invited you to meet with her over dinner at 1700 hours. Your onboarding physical is scheduled for 0700 tomorrow morning. Your quarters are on Deck 4 port aft, 431. And if you like I’ve been instructed to give you the complete ship’s tour.”

Yeoman Rand

He inspected the disk a moment before sliding it into his pocket. “My quarters will need modification for additional power draw and a direct communications feed from the relay on the bridge. The specifications are here and approved by Command Engineering.” and he offered her a data disk of his own. His voice was deep and resonating, and with a heavy accent that fortunately did not hinder his intelligibility. “I also wish to inspect three crates that are waiting for me. Is that possible now, Ensign?”

Nkosenye, CIO

Rand took the disk, slid it into the reader on the thicker forward end of the PaDD and pulled the appropriate form up. She passed the PaDD back, “If you will just make sure it’s correct and initial, I’ll have the request sent to engineering immediately.” She walked with him out of the shuttle bay and around to lift 3. “Of course, Lt. This way. Cargo bays are on deck 6, primary cargo bay extends to deck 5.” She paused at a comm pannel, =O=Chief Gorvak this is Yeoman Rand. Lt Nkosenye needs to inspect his cargo crates, three of them. Where are they located?=O=

=O=Lower primary cargo bay. I’ll bring them out and meet you there.=O=

=O=Thank you chief=O= Rand stepped onto the lift and grabbed a handle and turned it, “Deck 6.” and the lift started to move. Stepping off the lift Rand turned to starboard and moved down the corridor past two larger doors and then through the third. She looked around, spotting Chief Gorvak and moved towards him.

Yeoman Rand

As the Chief came forward, Nkosenye stepped towards him and held up a hand,. He didn’t say anything, he just looked at the seals on the crates and then nodded before looking at the Chief. “Please ensure these are sent to my quarters immediately. Thank you.” He turned and looked down at Rand. “If we can go to my quarters so I may drop off my bag. Then we can do the requested tour, Ensign.”

Nkosenye, CIO

Rand watched the by-play. This was the strangest new crew arrival she’d ever done. But she was discreet, had a fairly decent security clearance (all Cpt’s yeomen and higher did, they tended to be privy to a lot of information), and as long as she didn’t have to deal with the sealed crates she was happy and didn’t care. “Of course Lt.” She exited the cargo bay and headed towards the aft lift. “Cargo bays are on this deck as well as junior and enlisted officer quarters.” Again stepping onto the lift and grabbing a handle, “Deck 4. To the right of each turbo lift is an access ladder that will also take you between decks. Access ladders are also directly across from those to give access to the outer curvature of the decks. There are 5 lifts all positioned around the central core of the ship.” Stepping off the lift, Rand turned to the ship’s port side and down to room 431. “Deck four houses all of the department heads, VIP quarters and the machine shop. And this is you. Take all the time you need Lt.,” Rand stepped back out of the way. She would not be far no matter how long he needed. Everyone had different habits about their quarters and their bags and their contents. She was in no rush, at the moment.

Yeoman Rand

The door to the CIO’s quarters slid open and he stepped inside, dropped the bag on the floor, and walked back out. Looking at Rand, and with a stern but not judgmental tone to his voice said “Yes. And Jeffries Tubes access panels are located every ten meters along interior bulkheads and have an visual alert readout in case of atmosphere drops inside. The outerhull can be reached by access panels in Engineering, Impulse Engine Maintenance Access, between the General Planetary Science Laboratory and the General Astrological Science Laboratory, Mechanical Science Lab, and the Warp Core and Storage Pod Emergency Blast Hatch. All such panels require Bridge authorization to open. Below us on Deck Five is Junior and Non-Commissioned officers berthing, Upper Primary Cargo Bay, Armory and Armory Training Room, the Brig, and the office of the Chief of Ship’s Security. Perhaps I could save us both some time and simply ask you to show me what you feel I may not have gleaned from the ship schematics?”

Nkosenye, CIO

Rand nodded and turned, “This way Lt.” Good they didn’t have to waste time on the basics. Why Lt Nkosenye needed this tour she wasn’t sure but she was told to give it to him. She could stress over what she had or had not done to irritate the man and whether he was irritated or not, later. For the next half an hour, Rand led the way through the access hatches, ladders, tubes, junctions pointing out every location that was not as it appeared on the schematics. Panels that were removable but not marked as so, connections that looked like closed in spaces, and even small accidental alcoves where one could sit and observe or unapproved items could be stored. If Nkosenye indicated he knew about anything she was supposed to show him she skipped it and moved on. The very last place was at the top of a ladder, she reached up and moved a large panel and hoisted herself up into the small area. “I assume this was left open to be able to clean the ventilation. The captain is aware of it,” There was room for 3 or 4 officers, well considering Nkosenye maybe two or three, and you could see directly down into the bridge from the large vent in the ceiling.

Yeoman Rand

Nkosenye moved up but not into the space. He said nothing, just shook his head and exhaled slowly. He moved down the ladder and waited for the Yeoman to come back down. “Thank you for the insight, Ensign. Now could you tell me… is it normal for the Captain to invite new Officers to dinner? Or is this something out of the norm?”

Nkosenye, CIO

The yeoman nodded. It was her job to help in what ever way she could. And the climb around the ship was invigorating and let her stretch her legs, so the speak. She wasn’t security, but she understood the importance of such information. Though she had no idea why Cpt Rogers told her to give that information to Lt Nkosenye. Rand climbed down a deck or two, took a side access hatch, down a bit more and they found themselves stepping out on deck 4 near his quarters, “Cpt Rogers likes to meet with all her senior staff and get to know them. Junior officers and enlisted as well. She prefers to meet over a meal, but scheduling doesn’t always make that possible. So yes it is normal for Cpt Rogers, however, depending on who you ask, some find it out of the norm and strange because Cpt Carmichael did not do that.” There was a slight shrug, minor details of personality and command style.

Yeoman Rand

The large man simply nodded once and then said “Very well. Thank you for the tour. Please ensure Engineering gets the approved modifications. Thank you for your time, Ensign.” and he turned and walked into his quarters.
