Rand nodded politely to the senior officers, giving them respect as was due, but then she knew them or at least knew their records and knew they deserved it. She would never be flippant, she’d pass out of embarrassment if she tried.. She walked over, “Ah yes, En Dagget, if you would.” She pulled her PaDD held out a form, “Please sign here. For records to confirm you have arrived.” Then several pieces of paper were passed to her. “Contains your duty roster, your quarters, and a map of the ship showing where everything is. You have an appt with Lt Cmdr Alden, our first officer, at 1300 later today. You have a meeting at 0900 tomorrow with Cpt Rogers. We are about to tour the ship if you would like to join us, or I can find someone to show you around privately.”

Yeoman Rand (I’ve got this)

“Thanks, luv,” Quinn gripped the PaDD long enough to steady it while she signed, then took the papers and folded them before shoving them into the wide carry-bag that held all her personal effects. “I’d love to tour with everyone, and you can call me Quinn, by the by,” she added with a charming smile, sliding into the back of the group and adjusting her grip on her sack.

Rand held onto the PaDD to help steady it as Dagget signed the form. Rand’s free hand tucked behind her back, a gesture that possibly only Alden would recognize. It was meant to look like she was simply standing ‘at ease’ but in truth it was to hide the fact that something had made her uncomfortable and it hid the nervous shake of her hand as it closed in a loose fist and rested at the small of her back. “En Rand. There are two of us with the same last name so we go with that. Welcome aboard En Dagget. You can leave your bag here and the chief will get it sent to your quarters or you can bring it with you if you prefer.”

Shirley’s eyes darted to Alden and then to Dagget, “I would love to have my number one and helmsman join us for the tour. Lets get a move on though, I have plenty to accomplish today before we embark on our five year mission.” Her vocal tone hinted for Rand to begin the tour now.

Alden stood calmly and quietly, still internally living down his earlier mistake. “Of course, I would be delighted to join you, ma’am”, he replied, remaining as formal as possible. Addressing Rand he said, “You’re the pro when it comes to giving tours, I’m sure you won’t let the new Captain down, Ensign.”

Rand nodded. She knew from Rogers’ file that she probably had the specs memorized but they had En Dagget with them so. “Sentinel has five turbolift the circle the central core that runs the length of all the decks. Currently 2 and 4 are down for maintenance. Engineering says it is just shake down bugs and should have them back up tomorrow.” She glanced down at the PaDD and the engineering report. “Command quarters are on this deck as well.” She stopped in front of a door, “Your quarters are here, Captain. Your key rod unlocks your door along with a keyed pin code. The code is reset to default and it can be changed at your discretion. Yoeman quarters are next followed the XO quarters. Past that is the conference room and yeoman office.”

Rand waited to see if the Captain wanted to drop her carry bag in her quarters before continuing.

Shirley entered her quarters quite briefly just giving her new room a glance over and then set her carry on bag near the entrance for her to unpack later. She quickly exited her quarters and stepped onto the turbolift with the rest of the group. Her gaze looked straight at the door as they prepared to move on their next destination for the ship wide tour. She definitely appreciated the fact that her Yeoman was proficient at her duties to the level of having a strong sense of urgency to assist her in getting familiarized with the Sentinel as whole. Her review of the model’s specs turned out to be beneficial, but their was nothing like seeing everything with her own eyes in person.

Then she stepped into the turbolift and grabbed a handle. Once everyone was on, she turned hers to activate the lift, “Bridge.”

The doors opened and Rand stepped out and to the side coming to attention, “Captain On The Bridge!”

Yeoman Rand

Quinn was mostly quiet through the tour, although she did tap her fingers on her elbows a few times. As a high energy person, she required outlets for that energy at times. She jumped slightly when Rand shouted, wincing. Right, that was a thing people did. What was all the fuss anyhow? The Helmsman slipped out of the Turbolift and onto the Bridge, glancing around and looking for her console. She didn’t know how much time she had to admire and examine it before they had to move on to other parts of the tour!

Ens. Quinn Dagget, Helm

Rand saw Dagget wince and mentally shrugged, she wasn’t that loud, but, she thought about it, she did know how to project over a crowded and noisey assemblage. Perhaps she’d projected too much? She put that aside for the moment, no one else seemed to mind as they turned to get their first look at the new captain. Rand turned to Dagget and pointed out where her work station was. Sure that the woman was eager to get a look at it.

Quinn grinned at Rand, thankful for the tip on where exactly to find her workstation. She stood beside it, watching the Helmsman on duty as he worked. He glanced up at her and smiled. Probably would have started a brief conversation introducing themselves if they weren’t on duty. As it was, the helmsman scribbled a note on a small sticky note and gave it to Quinn. All the helmsmen hang out in Rec Room, fridays at 8. See you there.

Shirley exited the turbolift and stepped on the Sentinel’s bridge for the first time. She looked over the bridge in it’s entirety taking in this memorable moment with it being her first command. Having overcome the many barriers that she had faced in her career path due to her gender, everything had finally come full circle as she had made one of her dreams of becoming a Captain in Starfleet a reality. She raised her hand up casually as a slight smile spread across her face, “Everyone at ease.” Afterwards, she walked from station to station getting a feel for the placements and took a look at a few of their technological upgrades from her previous ship. After a few moments, she came across the Captain’s chair and paused to look over it for a moment.

Roman watched the new Captain admire the bridge. He couldn’t blame her, really. He’d done the same. It was a fantastic ship.

Shirley sat down in her new chair to ensure that it was a nice fit for her and her test results indicated that the it definitely suited her well as it was quite comfortable. She pressed the ship wide communications button on her console to conduct a brief broadcast, “Attention crew, this is your new Captain Shirley Rogers speaking. I wanted to let each of you know that I look forward to working together as we explore the cosmos over the upcoming years. I will have our mission orders from Starfleet Command within the next twenty four hours. I want each of you to take this time to say goodbye to any family on Earth and to help ensure that the ship is ready to go when we receive our orders. As I walk the ship now before are departure, I am eager to meet you one by one not only now but throughout our time together on the Sentinel, Rogers out.” Shirley released the communications button, rose from her chair, and turned to face Rand with a calm expression on her face, “So Yeoman, where to next?”

  • Captain Shirley Rogers, CO

Quinn smiled slightly at the other Helmsman, but watched the Captain with a bit of wonder on her face. What a star.

Roman had not been down to Earth since returning to pick up the new Captain and swap crew, nor did he plan to. He found her message a bit… excitable. Meet every crew member? Still, he enjoyed her enthusiasm. “You like the bridge, then?” He asked her.

Shirley stood up from her chair and looked up at her first officer with an expression of confidence on her face, “I do like the bridge. I just had to make myself comfortable and make sure that the chair fit.” She then continued to follow Rand as she had been leading their tour of the Sentinel.

Rand led them through a quick lap of deck 1. Some of these things she wouldn’t include on a typical welcome tour because they didn’t apply to every officer and could get discovered and visited on their own time. However, this wasn’t a typical tour and from everything she had read Cpt Rogers was thorough. “Deck 1 also houses the impulse engine and fusion reactors, The Deuterium fill port is on the aft hull along with the storage tanks to port and starboard, with the tractor beam emitter 1 located on the aft of the deck.” Then they moved on to deck 2 which housed the ship’s escape pods and everything related to the torpedo and probe systems. The deck was full of security and tactical officers.

The expanded ship tour was fun. Quinn realized that this probably wasn’t the typical tour a crewmember would get, so she stayed quiet in the back so she wouldn’t annoy anyone. She couldn’t help the little arm taps and other expressions of pent up excitement, though.

They hit each deck in succession, Rand making sure to stop at each section. She was sure Cpt Rogers knew the schematic back and forward but stopping allowed Rogers a brief inspection of each area and to meet the crew working there. She made sure to provide details of what each section was and how it related to the ship, as needed so that Dagget wouldn’t be totally left in the dark or feel like she was ignored. Even if the information was boring for her.

On Deck 10 she stopped at a comm unit and sent out a general call for all officer, minus the bridge to report to the shuttle bay for the Captain’s Oath Ceremony. Then they finished the last several 3 decks of the ship.

Entering the shuttle bay, the bay crew had moved the shuttles to the side to make room for the gathered crew and a podium had been placed where everyone could see it. Rand walked to the front and blew a three note ascending scale on the boson’s whistle. When she was done she stepped aside for Lt Cmdr Alden to call the crew to orders.

    Yeoman Rand

Roman had followed along with the tour and now stood next to Rand at the front. Once Rand had blown the whistle, Roman raised his voice to be heard by the crew in the shuttle bay. “Crew, come to orders!” He said, intending the crew to come to attention in preparation for the Sentinel’s new captain.

Shirley stood up straight as she maintained excellent posture and clasped her hands behind her back comfortably while she looked over her new crew that had assembled for the special occasion. It was nice to be in the limelight for this special occasion as she was used to being in the shadows in the past attending these types of ceremonies. She spoke in a soothing tone of voice, “At ease everyone, I am Captain Shirley Rogers. I look forward to our time together exploring the cosmos and uncovering the mysteries of the final frontier. Thank you for coming to attend the ceremony today, however, I am sure everyone could use a break from their hard work on the preparations for the Sentinel’s departure.” After delivering her message, she pivoted off of her back heel to face Rand as she waited to take her oath as Captain of the Sentinel.
