David came aboard the USS Sentinel without much fanfare, but he was excited nonetheless. His first starship assignment came with great opportunities and great trepidation. He was handed a piece of information, the location of his quarters assignment. He walked through the ship until he found the right room. Small, but comfortable, he deposited his belongings on the bed and went off to find the CSO.

If he asked anyone, the first thing they’d say was “The biology lab.” It seemed this was where he spent nearly all of his time, unless he was needed somewhere else, or wanted on the bridge, or something. But if Ensign Sweeney were to check the Biology lab, they’d find no sign of him. He hadn’t been expecting a new officer meeting.

Instead, he was down in the planetary science, helping with the results of the study of a particular planet’s moons. Aldaria III had two moons, which orbited at different intervals, and it was something they were studying in their free time.

Because the jungle planet had two moons, it had longer days than earth and higher tides that pulverized its continents’ shores.

David did find certain advantages in seeing most of the ship before he met the CSO. He was however, a little bit concerned that he was not expected. He came to the correct lab and said “Excuse me, I’m looking for Lieutenant Commander Alden. I just arrived on the ship I’m due to check in.”

Roman turned, confused for a moment, and then seemed to remember. “Ah, I thought you were due to arrive tomorrow.” He said, “and that would be me. You must be..” he thought for a moment to remember the name. “Sweeney, yes?”

~ Lt Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO

“Yes sir, that’s me. Ensign Sweeney reporting for duty.” David wasn’t aware he was early. “I suppose early is better than late, commander.” At this point, where he was kind of settled in, and the lab seemed very grand, especially for a starship laboratory.

A small grin crossed Roman’s face. “That it is.” With a primary mission of exploration, planetary science and astrocartography were both large departments. Roman himself, however, was a biologist. “What is your specialty? What sort of science are you in?”

~ Lt Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO

“I specialize in chemistry, sir. I left a research project trying to synthesize a new superheavy element when I was reassigned here. I hope the project is still going, we were just starting to make real progress.” David hesitated. “Anyway sir, I hope I can do some good work here.”

-Ensign Sweeney

“I hope so as well,” Roman replied. He had taken chemistry during his schooling and he knew a bit about it. “It would be interesting to see done.” He thought for a moment, then said, “Did you have any questions relating to your duties or the ship?”

~ Lt Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO

David nodded. “I did, sir. It’s my understanding that you serve as first officer as well, is there a designated secondary head of sciences for those times when you’re serving on the bridge, or do we report to the highest ranking science officer currently on shift?”

-Ensign Sweeney

“Report to the highest ranking officer currently on shift,” Roman replied, repeating the second option. “Each shift has a lead, so to speak, but there is no official second head of science just yet. I have a couple of bridge shifts per week, and of course I must report in any sort of emergency, in which case I again, hand off the science department to the next highest ranking officer.”

~ Lt Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO

“That makes sense, sir. Does the chemistry division have any projects on currently?” David already liked this ship quite a bit. Though being on a ship at all was rather new to him, it seemed to be a nice place and a good crew.
