Cleolet was never one to sit in an office, she had always been hands on. That was how liked it, even with her promotion and being one of the first Caitians in star fleet. she still liked to get her hands dirty. She wore the standard red uniform dress of engineering. while she could chose to wear trouser and some might say it would be more appropriate. she liked the freedom the dress provided, after all when you were crawling round access hatches and Jeffries tubes, no one tended to look.

But right now she wasn’t crawling through hatches or getting her hands dirty. She was sitting in her office looking over the suggestion of her engineers. Her tail swaying gently side to side as she read. With the introduction of the new transporters the ship had a power to spare, power that could be used a hundred different ways. So she had opened it up to her engineers and the rest of the crew, who where interested, on what to do with that power. She had her eye on increasing shield or phaser power, but comparing ideas was part of the fun.

She liked a good brain storm and so far her engineers had come up trumps, to use a humans phrase. And she knew the ideas weren’t finished yet. To that end she had left an open door policy in place. if someone needed a chat or had an idea, she wanted them to feel comfortable enough to come to her.

Liuet j.g Cleolet (Chief Engineer)

A head popped from the edge of the doorway almost completely sideways. It was the face of Karl Johansson, a plain-looking man with a kindly smile almost constantly fixed on his face “Morning Chief” He said, his Scandinavian accent thicker today “Desk looks good on you” He’d only know Cleolet a little as a junior Officer during his few months on the Sentinel but he suspected she would do fine at her new job “Thinking of new power allocations?” The seemingly disembodied head asked.

SCPO Karl - Eng

Cleolet looked up from her pad and smiled “Chief, I still have to get used to that” she said before turning her chair to face the door and Karl “You can come in you know.” she said pushing the chair opposite her out with her foot/paw.

His smile widened and he seemed to half fall to the side but caught the side of the doorway and turned it into a half swinging motion, moving to the seat and sitting down.

“And yes I’m looking at the options. Do you have any ideas?” she asked knowing he probably did.

Liuet j.g Cleolet (CE)

“I have a few knocking around the old noggin” He said carefully crossing his legs “I haven’t had the opportunity to read the new power change reports, Spent half the night crawling through deck 4 fixing that grav issue” He said in an amused tone “I wasn’t involved with the new transporter setup, how much are we getting?” He asked, usually he would have read up by now but small issues had been piling up and he didn’t like for them to become big issues. Besides that’s what officers were for, dealing with the big issues.

SCPO Karl - Eng

“10% give or take” Cleolet said simply “It’s mad how much the old transporters took. I mean the new ones where a pain to install, but you can’t argue their efficiency. Even if it did take half the engineering staff to install them.” she added passing a pad over to Karl

“Its a list of suggestion so far” she said after a short pause. the pad contained a list of things from the ingenious like using it as an emergency power shunt, to the slightly less important, like using it to increase cooking times in the galley. The usual suspect where there as well impulse engines, shields, phaser and so on. it was safeto sa the power could be sued a hundred different ways.

“So what are your ideas” she asked

Lieut j.g Cleolet (CE)

Karl nodded slowly as he read through the list “Well I guess the choice is if you want to give the power boost entirely to a single system or spread it out among several key systems, it’s a bigger boost than I thought but then of course the old Transporter system was a hungry beastie” He tapped the device absently as he considered “I’m assuming the thought of using it as a reserve has come up?” He didn’t wait for an answer “Most ship operations don’t really need a boost all the time but perhaps we can set up a new emergency reserve for certain key systems to be poured into when needed bypassing the ordinary time it takes for reserves to be used” He shrugged “I don’t have any math or a working model for this but I think it’s sound in theory”

SCPO - Karl

“Like an emergency reserve. something we can pour into a specific system if we need to on the fly. That was one of my ideas” Cleolet said simply punching something into her computer the turning the screen to face Karl “It’s a good idea, I’ve already started work on the calculations. but it might take a lot of work. Finding somewhere to store it and finding a way to activate it instantly is just the start. we’d have to run tests on the systems to make sure we didn’t overload them. but if it worked, it would be one heck of a surprise in a fight ” she added pausing for a moment. if Karl was to read the equation on screen, he would find the maths to be sound but it was also clear that unless they came up with some way of managing the extra energy it would indeed fry what every system it was fed into. The systems would handle it to a certain point, they had built in safeties but after that point that was it, the extra power would cause an overload.

“Any ideas?” Cleolet asked

Lieut j.g Cleolet (CE)

Karl nodded as he read “Yes it is a problem, perhaps we can ask the Bridge to allow us some time for stress tests next time we’re drydocked, see how much additional energy each system can handle, perhaps find a way to temporarily disable the safeties if the need ever arises” He frowned “We may need to build a secondary energy coupling and perhaps something to discharge excess energy if it becomes neccecary”

SCPO Karl - ENg

Cleoelt nodded in agreement “We might be able to discharge it along the ships hull, most energy discharges are dissipated that way, so it shouldn’t be much of an issue. Stress test are a good idea, I’ll ask when I get the chance. But that’s just one idea, where do you think extra power is needed?” she asked, she valued Karl’ opinion he was a good man and a great engineer, in fact Cleolet would put money down that if he wasn’t a non-com and had a commission, he would have been chief engineer over her.

Lieut j.g Cleolet (CE)

Karl considered the question “Honestly I don’t think it’s necessary at any one place over another. From a Tactical view having some extra oomph on the phasers or being able to take a little more fire from the shields makes sense. Sensors won’t benefit much from extra power but our impulse engines might. Adding power to the sensor diodes for the extra power to the sensor Jammers is not a bad idea” He stopped realizing that he wasn’t making a specific point and laughed “The INdependence class is a well-built ship, I was involved a little during the design phase of the Class V engines in ‘42. Personally, I think either shields or the tractor beam are the two main areas of focus for excess energy. Shields for obvious reasons and the tractor beam because I’ve seen haulers fail because of poor energy distribution”

SCPO Karl - ENG

Cleloet thought for a few moments “Well we do have 10% to play with, so we could put 5% into the shields and 5% into the tractor beams. The only question is would 5% make much of a difference in the grand scheme of things” she said as she turned her commute back round and began working things out “If the shields had 5% more power in theory they could withstand 5% more punishment and the tractor beam could pull a larger load or hold smaller load for longer” she said as she worked.

“It defiantly would count in the grand scheme of things.” she aid shaking her head “You know i sometime forget how complicated running a ship is. I’m so used to it that I forget to take a moment to sit back and go wow this is actually a really complicated piece of machinery. it a shame how easily we take for granted the sheer power we have under our control” she said her tone amused.

Lieut j.g Cleolet (CE)

Karl chuckled “That’s true. Especially compared to what Starfleet used to fly. I once did a museum trip on one of the old Warp Five vessels, probably a great time to be an engineer, discovering all the new technologies and finding a way to make them fit on a ship that wasn’t designed to have shields or phasers. Put into perspective and we’re running on an overpowered, over-armed, and overmanned giant ships”

SCPO Karl - ENG

Cleolet nodded “This early humans were impressive, they had so little to protect themselves and yet they still went out there. When the Catians first encountered Humans, we thought you were too young and fool hardy. But over the years and the time our races have spent together, we learnt you’re much more then that.” she said kindly “It funny Catian ships are far more advanced an yet Humanity accomplished things in a few hundred years that we struggled to do in double that time. You really are a remarkable species” she added.

Lieut j.g. Cleolet (CE)

Karl waved a hand in a dismissive fashion “We’ve always been able to adapt fast, Just a few more years and we’ll be celebrating the century since the founding of the Federation, no doubt there’ll be a big party all over Earth. Hope to be home then, I’d like to take my boy to Paris for the celebration.”
