(snip)

Roman had lived without animals before. The first animal that had actually been his since the childhood dog, was one of his first research animals. But he did prefer having pets. He didn’t like to see his study animals as pets, mostly because when he did have to give them away, or the rare occasion they had to be euthanized, it made it far too hard to let them go. And there wasn’t space on a ship for a million animals. So to him, the last time he’d actually had a pet, was the dog. He knew sometime his studies would be over, that if and when he became a Captain, he’d have to let them go, the responsibility of a ship too great to continue caring for all of them properly. The idea seemed far off, something he didn’t have to worry about for a while. “No, I guess I can’t anymore, either.” He said after a few moments of silence.

Oddly enough her own thoughts somewhat reflected his. He had told her during one of their late night conversations that he wanted to be a captain one day. “Well then, it seems to be a semi tradition that captains have pets. Admiral Archer had a beagle on the NX class. You’ll have to get a pet when you make captain. Maybe your rabbit.” Rand could never imagine sitting in the center chair. There was plenty of protocol but also plenty of unknowns where protocol didn’t work. She much preferred being behind the scenes. She was sure Roman would reach that goal though. He had the confidence and self assurance for it. And the month leading up to Cpt Rogers’ arrival had formed that opinion. He’d taken it all on and managed despite the pressure and the insane schedule he’d been forced to keep.

The month leading up to Captain Rogers’ arrival had been a long and busy one, and had, for a short time, made Roman question his goal. But he’d resolved himself quickly, if he’d handled that, he could handle actually being Captain, he was sure. “Admiral Archer and Captain Rogers are the only Captains I’ve heard of that had pets,” Roman replied, though her comment made him smile. Like a little reward for reaching that center chair. A rabbit did not strike Roman as very Captain-like, despite how much he still wanted one. He could imagine himself with a big, fluffy Angora on his lap. That wasn’t the breed he wanted, but the picture just popped into his head.

“Well if the trial at Starbase 2 goes well then lots of people will have them there. So you can be the third, on the short list, for having one on a star ship,” she was serious but also teasing. Taking on a pet on a star ship would be a huge commitment. If anyone was able to pull it off though, Rand was sure it would be Roman. Most nights she was still awake, tired, but awake while they talked. Roman sometimes even falling asleep while she talked to him. Tonight it seemed their rolls were reversed. Rand suddenly found she was more than tired. She hadn’t been earlier when he asked, but she was relaxed and that added to her level of tired. It was a first, that she found herself that relaxed around anyone other than Randy or her family.

“You’ll have to notify me when that trial has concluded,” Roman said. He wasn’t sure if he’d actually take on a pet, but at least he could follow the trial on the starbase. Rand seemed like she was getting tired, and Roman realized it was a first, it was always him who fell asleep. Of course, they always had their nightly chats in his quarters. Roman was tired, too, but not as tired as he suspected Rand might be. “You look like you’re getting sleepy.”

It wasn’t something she was actually following, but had come across. But if he wanted to know the results she would make sure to keep an eye out for the reports. She sipped slowly at the tea and realized that probably wasn’t helping. Oh…she was being rude wasn’t she? He didn’t think she was bored or uninterested did he? Was that his way of telling her he wanted her to leave? The worry brought a slightly sharper focus than her relaxed state had. “I…I wasn’t…a few minutes ago. Gu..guess the tea is working.” Her voice slipped slightly back to normal, but not completely. She didn’t want him to think she wanted to leave or wasn’t enjoying the conversation. Totally the opposite, she just didn’t know if she should say or what to say.
