“You’ll have to notify me when that trial has concluded,” Roman said. He wasn’t sure if he’d actually take on a pet, but at least he could follow the trial on the starbase. Rand seemed like she was getting tired, and Roman realized it was a first, it was always him who fell asleep. Of course, they always had their nightly chats in his quarters. Roman was tired, too, but not as tired as he suspected Rand might be. “You look like you’re getting sleepy.”

~ Roman

It wasn’t something she was actually following, but had come across. But if he wanted to know the results she would make sure to keep an eye out for the reports. She sipped slowly at the tea and realized that probably wasn’t helping. Oh…she was being rude wasn’t she? He didn’t think she was bored or uninterested did he? Was that his way of telling her he wanted her to leave? The worry brought a slightly sharper focus than her relaxed state had. “I…I wasn’t…a few minutes ago. Gu..guess the tea is working.” Her voice slipped slightly back to normal, but not completely. She didn’t want him to think she wanted to leave or wasn’t enjoying the conversation. Totally the opposite, she just didn’t know if she should say or what to say.

Rand

Roman didn’t want her to leave, nor did he think she wasn’t enjoying the conversation, he just didn’t know if she wanted to fall asleep in here, which at this rate, it looked like she might do. He smiled as he sipped from his own mug, “It always does. Do you want to stay here?” He asked.

~ Roman

She smiled slightly in response to his, but her thoughts were totally not where his were and she misunderstood the question. She thought he was asking if she wanted to go somewhere else. And though a walk might help wake her up, the idea was to help him be able to sleep not keep him awake. Besides, “I don’t know where else we would go, and I don’t think my foot feels up to walking very far right now.” It had started to ache earlier, now it wasn’t but she was sure it would if she walked too far right now.

Rand

Roman grinned and shook his head. “I meant, you look like you’re going to fall asleep, I was asking if you wanted to go to bed, in your quarters. By your answer I’d guess that’s a ‘not yet’.” It wasn’t yet as late as Roman usually went to bed, and maybe that was why, despite his cup of tea being nearly empty, he didn’t seem all that tired yet. A walk seemed a terrible idea, he’d never fall asleep then. And it would make her foot worse.

~ Roman

In her quarters? Where else would she…oh! OH! She was about ready to fall asleep in the chair wasn’t she…she blushed softly, the image of herself falling asleep in his chair and ending up ‘staying the night.’ She was enjoying the conversation, listening him talk about when he was younger, but she was not prepared to wake up in his quarters later. The idea made her feel like she should be having a bout of anxiety, but it simply didn’t start. The actuality of it was she was too tired and was relaxed enough around him she didn’t actually feel ambitious about it. She wasn’t worried, right then, about how Roman might want her to react, she could just be honest…plus her nerves had decided to check out. They’d overworked enough for one day. “No, not yet, but I don’t think I want to fall asleep in the chair either.” She felt guilty, she knew it wasn’t that late, and she didn’t want to leave if he wasn’t tired, and leave him to deal with his difficulty sleeping alone.

Rand

No, Roman didn’t think she’d want to sleep in the chair. That sounded less than comfortable. As much as he didn’t want to deal with his sleeping problems alone, either, Roman would rather Rand take care of herself first, at least then only one of them would be tired the next day. But she said ‘not yet’, and that made him happy, at least he could spend a little more time with her. “So what pet have you always wanted, then?” He asked, resuming the previous topic.

~ Roman

Rand had started to drink more of the tea and instead put the mug on the table. She started to answer and then stopped, and then chuckled a little, “I have been trying to answer that question since I was five. My parents took me to the shelter, said I could get anyone I wanted. Two weeks later, my dad stopped taking me. Said we could go back when I made up my mind. And told me absolutely no on adopting them all. I still haven’t made up my mind. But if I could pick any animal....” That was hard, Rand lived animals, all kinds. “And I didn’t have to worry about their size or how much room they needed? I wanted a miniature horse and a rabbit too at one point. I still do, but an Australian Shepherd.” She didn’t know anything about horses so she had decided against that. And with her social anxiety she was afraid she’d make a rabbit too nervous, but also they were small and she thought it would be good to have a pet that was big enough to manage with her if she had a problem. In the end, now that she was older, she was looking for a support animal and not just a pet.

Rand

“An Australian shepherd… As in a dog?” Roman asked. He liked dogs, but for some reason, he rarely considered actually having one. Of course, a shepherd was no more out there than a miniature horse. Roman was sure she’d probably considered having almost any animal as a pet. In a pet he mostly wanted a companion, and whatever he got, if he ever did get a pet, he wanted it to be something he knew he’d have enough time for.

~ Roman

Rand nodded, “They are really smart and can be trained to do and go just about anywhere. I mean if I had my choice I would have a whole menagerie of animals.” She wanted a companion, but when considering she’d decided she wanted something bigger, and dogs were accepted practically anywhere. That when she was alone and anxious and panicked or simply lonely she could hug it. Not just hold it carefully in two hands, she could actually hug her pet. But she didn’t say that because even to her own internal ears it sounded very pathetic. “I guess a dog is kind of cliche. But I wanted an animal that was smart enough to be trained to be able to behave where ever I went and also be just a little independent It would be curious about all the new places we went and not get bored while I worked. I didn’t want to have to keep it in a cage or kennel all the time. They make really amazing ‘thinking’ toys for dogs. It keeps them occupied and stimulated while the owners have to work.” And a lot of directors could work a dog into a script, she could have kept it with her, not so much a minute horse or a rabbit, or even the hedgehog she’d considered once.

Rand

Having a pet that could go everywhere with him did sound nice, but he didn’t necessarily need it with him all the time, and maybe that’s why the rabbit was far more appealing to him. His dog, from when he was young, was well trained, it wasn’t like it went around causing trouble and he did like the dog (in fact, it was “his” pet). But the idea just didn’t appeal to him like it used to. “Dogs can be trained to do almost anything,” Roman said. He’d heard of dogs historically trained to help people with more or less any disability he could think of, police dogs, therapy dogs used in prisons or with mental health patients… And the dogs usually liked having a job. “It’s a good choice of pet,” he said.
