ooc: I decided to give Kovan a second job lol so uh, here he is! Second check-in!

ic: Kovan made his way through the engineering deck to the CE’s office, taking the straight path and ignoring those he passed by. They were not relevant, and therefore safely by passed. He did not return any passing smiles, nor return empty greetings. A pointless waste of breath, saying hello to someone just because you walk by them. All for the excuse of being “friendly”. Before hitting the door chime, he straightened his collar and the bottom hem of his shirt and schooled his expression into something neutral and less scowl.

Ensign ch’Sirhc (COMMO, ENGR)

After a short while an NE walked up to him “Sorry fella, the chiefs not there, she’s up there” he said pointing up to the ceiling of engineer “I’ll get her for you” he said opening his com =c= Hey Chief, there’s a fella here for you=c= he said as he looked up at a hatch on the ceiling.

=c= On the way.=c= came Cleolets reply. Moment later Cloelet emerged from the hatch and dropped seamlessly to the gangway beneath her. She then headed down the stairs and ch’Sirhc could see her properly. She was a tall strong looking caitian with ginger fur, yellow eyes and a slender tail. she was attractive by most people standards, she wore the standard red dress but no boots, as her feet/paws wouldn’t fit in standard ones. To see a catian was rare they had only just joined the federation and while this ship had two onboard that in its was unheard of anywhere else.

But a Catian DH was another thing entirely. Cleolet was one of the first caitian senior officers. (OOC: This is due to the year reset, as caitian joined the federation a couple years before our new ship timeline starts)

She eyed the Andorian for a moment then spoke “Lieutenant Junior grade Cleolet, Chief Engineer. what can I do for you?” she asked her tone authoritive but warm.

Lieut j.g. Cleolet (CE)

Kovan nodded to the NE and would have gone on his own but the NE went ahead and com’ed the CE. Not that it mattered, he could wait, and it seemed he didn’t have to wait long. A caitian appeared before him. That wasn’t something you saw everyday. Kovan’s expression remained the same as he calmly addressed the department head. (Meeting new aliens hardly shocked Kovan. The awe of seeing something so alien to your own wore off quickly. Especially when said awesome, new life form took your naivete as the sign of an easy mark. That was a mistake you learn to only make once.) “Sir, I am Ensign Kovan ch’Sirhc, new communications and engineering officer.”

Kovan was typical of an andorian male: blue skinned and his white hair pulled back into a short pony-tail at the base of his neck. Not nearly as tall as Cleolet but what was the point in comparing height? “Reporting for duty, sir.”

Ensign ch’Sirhc (COMMO, ENGR)

Celolet nodded “Good to meet you, an please I know the regulations say for you to call me Sir but I prefer Ma’am or Chief” she said as she walked into her office motioning for Kovan to follow her. Once in side it was clear that Cleolet spent hardly any time in her office, it was not decorated or personalised but everything had it’s place and everything was neat.

“Please take a seat” she said gesturing to the chair in front of a standard desk while she walked over to a jug of water “water?” she asked kindly.

“No thank you, ma’am,” Kovan answered and took a seat, back straight and hands in his lap.

Once Kovan had given his answer Cleolet took a seat and turned on her computer “Give me a sec to pull up your file” she said simply.

“We’ve lost power to our impulse engines and warp drive, the ship is under attack, we need to escape or the ship will be destroyed. You can fix it, but you have to draw power from another system. You have two options life support on the bridge, which will put the senior officers in danger or the deflector shields, which will put other sections of the ship and junior officers in danger. What do you pick?” she asked as she read his file.

Lieut j.g. Cleolet (CE)

Kovan took the sudden question in stride. It took him a little under a minute to decide upon his answer, “Life support from the bridge. Ship integrity must be maintained. Surviving an attack would be meaningless if the ship lost critical systems or took critical hull damage.” Officers can be replaced or promoted. The survival of senior officers would mean nothing if ship sustained too much damage to function or could not maintain hull integrity.

Ensign ch’Sirhc (COMMO, ENGR)

Cleolet nodded “Good. A number of people had answered that they would save the senior officers. Which I get but when it come to the ships safety the wider picture always coms first. Although I do hope you would not just leave them to die all the time” she said jokingly trying to keep things light.

“So what made you want to take on a duel role?” She asked “Comms is crucial and adding engineering on top seems like you’re asking a lot of yourself.” she added turning her full attention to ch’Sirhc

Lieut j.g Cleolet (CE)

“To be blunt, I have been a communication officer my whole life.” Kovan’s tone was even, and self-assured. He knew he could handle both roles with skill and professionalism. “I first learned when I was sixteen, working at my colony’s trade port. I learned more and gained experience working for trade vessels and transport vessels. I’ve traveled extensively across the galaxy in many ships. Along the way I picked up engineering know-how. Enough to assist when necessary. When I enlisted there was little left to learn from my communications classes. I knew some engineering, so I applied myself to build on my existing knowledge.”

His academy grades were consistently good and Kovan had the intellect to succeed in any area he applied himself too. He also picked up engineering classes because he needed the challenge. The extra workload kept him honest and away from temptations.

Cleolet nodded “Yes but why choose a duel role?” she asked “if you wanted to learn more about engineering and build on your existing knowledge, you could have enlisted as just an engineer. However you chose to also take on communications. Why? I can sure you you will have plenty of work as an engineer so you wouldn’t be short of things to do” she said simply but not unkindly Cleolet was just trying to understand her new officer. She was also hoping to alleviate her own concerns she didn’t want too lose an engineer at a critical time because he had to replace the officer at communications for one reason or another.

Lieut j.g. Cleolet (CE)

Kovan shifted in his chair, quiet while he parsed out his response. It never occurred to him to give up one role for the other. He couldn’t imagine himself living a life separate from languages. Kovan was confident in his ability to do well in both, even when swinging between the two. “Languages are what I excel at. I’m a good engineer, but an exceptional linguist.” He paused unsure if he properly explained it, or if he could explain it. The desire to learn and know more burned within him, and was the push that kept him moving his whole life. “Communications aren’t just what I know, but what I’m passionate about. I enjoy engineering. I want to challenge myself and broaden my knowledge and engineering satisfies that need. That said, I won’t give either role less than my best. I may have passion for one, but the other is just as important to me.”

Ensign ch’Sirhc (COMMO, ENGR)

“That’s good to hear. However I would be lying if I said I didn’t have my concerns. It nothing to do with your skills, what I’m concerned about is that I could lose an engineer at a critical moment.” Cleolet said simply but not harshly ” What will you do if we are in an emergency, I need an extra engineer because we’ve suffered heavy damage but then your called to the bridge because the communication officer has been killed or wounded?” she asked, she wasn’t trying to be difficult she was trying to figure out how everything would work out

Lieut j.g. Cleolet (CE)

It was a valid concern, and one Kovan could not be sure he had an answer for. As a Starfleet officer he will serve whatever role he is given, and to perform his roles to the best of his ability. However, when did one role take precedence? There was a gray area between the two and he will have to learn to traverse that grayness. “I cannot promise that I will always be available.” Kovan said, “However, in that situation. . . If I am serving as an engineering officer when there is emergency and the ship is in danger then I believe it is my duty to remain in engineering. The same if I am serving as a communications officer and there is an emergency, it is my duty to stay and assist however I am able. I believe it is prudent to remain in my assigned position, dependent upon the emergency and the safety of the ship. I don’t think it is the answer you are looking for but it is the only answer I can confidently give.”

Ensign ch’Sirhc (COMMO, ENGR)

Cloelet nodded it was good to see that ch’Sirhc was willing to admit when he didn’t know. That was trait many didn’t poses and while the answer wasn’t what she wanted. It was still a good answer “It is still a good answer none the less. I hope such a situation never arises but at least I have half an idea if it does happen now.” she said truthfully

“Do you have any questions for me so far?” She asked after a short pause.
