Haadok stepped onto the bridge and nodded to Rand. Snaking her hands behind her back, she approached the Captain and slid into the space just to the left of her chair. “Captain,” she politely greeted and lifted her gaze to the viewscreen.

Scans began, and for the first hour or so of their work things were quiet. The wisps of the outer edge of the Abyss kept swirling about, as if reaching out to grab the ship, but it just was an effect of the stellar winds nothing more. The wisps were soon shunted out of the way of the ship by the deflector array. As the Sentinel continued on a lazy course parrelling the outer edges, a beep soon came up on the Science console signaling a result!

About what seemed half a light year deep into the Abyss from their current location a system’s outline was picked up. What seemed a four, maybe five planetary system in fact. Details were of course sketchy but the following could be made out. 1) The innermost two planets were likely based on stellar drift small in size and likely lacking any form of real atmosphere. 2) the third planet seemed a bit bigger, maybe about 2-3 times that of Earth, but the scan results coming back did paint a picture of a possible class m world, there was also indication of a possible lunar body in its orbit, 3) the forth planet was for sure a large gas giant, maybe a little bigger then Jupiter, even from this distance storms could be picked up through its stellar body also picked up were a smattering of smaller bodies which could be either ships, or moons, it was impossible to tell from here. 4) scan were sketchy if not outright impossible to confirm if there WAS a fifth planet, one or two minutes it seemed there was one, then the next it wasn’t. If there was one there then it seemed also class m with a lunar body, almost a twin of the third planet it seemed. If it wasn’t there then something it seems that they couldn’t pick up was mirroring the effect of the third planet somehow. How was an impossibility to say. Whether there was any life in this system intelligent or otherwise was impossible to say.

“Captain, there is a small system coming into view,” Roman said as the scans began to pick up the outline. He spent another several minutes checking the scans. “Four… maybe five planets, hard to tell. The first two don’t appear likely to have an atmosphere. The third is a possible class M, larger than earth. Might have a moon, as well.” He sounded excited at the prospect of a possible class M. “And the last planet is a gas giant.” He peered at the scanner for another few minutes. “There might be a fifth, but it’s impossible to tell from this distance, it’s barely reading.”

E’usah checked the Nav console and made sure all the scans were being downloaded to Stellar Cartography for mapping. “Captain, Cdr., the fifth planet is just beyond reliable sensor range, a minor course correction would bring us close enough for a reliable scan in about 20 minutes.” Eusah hoped she wasn’t overstepping her bounds, but it was her job to plot and correct their course to effect the greatest results from their mission and scans.

Quinn pressed buttons and watched their course, making sure her nav screen displayed the same course as what E’usah plotted. In contrast to E’usah’s nerves, the Helmsman was relaxed and confident. She still tapped her foot on the floor to the beat of a song only she could hear (it was stuck in her head), and took sips of ice-cold water from her Thermos every now and then, but overall she was unusually (for her) focused on manning her station. Her ADD tendencies were actually letting her focus for once.

As a little time passed again while the crew awaited the Captain’s response, more of the stellar winds around the region seemed to push the wisps of the Abyss out around the sentinel. Again no harm was done but for a brief moment or so sensors were greatly reduced due to their interference. Without pause the wisps retreated from being so near the ship and everything went back to normal. Scans still picked up the earlier indicated system, nothing seemed to have changed and their were no other signs of ships, life forms, or systems within their scanning raidus.

E’usah sat quietly at the NAV console, glancing at Quinn every now and then, and scanning their position and plotting it as a small blue arrow on her display. She sat with her feet together and her tail draped across her lap. She reached out and took a sip of the mint tea that Rand had brought earlier. For the moment the only sounds on the bridge were the gentle beeps and clicks from the various stations and the sigh of the environmental system exchanging the air. She reached out with a clawed finger and tapped a minor course correction into the console, the sound of her claw on the icons seemed loud to her.

The expression of a tactician was written all over Shirley’s face as she clenched her right fist just slightly in a comfortable manner as she turned her head to meet Cleolet’s gaze, “Lieutenant, how effective will our shields be when we enter the Abyss? What are our options in the event we have unwelcome company?”

Shields as they knew would be inoperative within the Abyss, though they did have their back up defensive system with hull polarization which would be unaffected but was a far cry less effective then their shields. Still it was something.

Cleoelt thought for a moment her tail swaying lightly “Shields won’t work Ma’am. Our only defence will be our hull plating and our speed. Offensive wise we should till have our main weapons, however with minimal scanners targeting will be hard, I’m also worried about the phaser power setting alight something in the nebula. I’m no scientist though so I might be wrong on that last point.” She said truthfully and respectfully

“If we run into something unwelcome and diplomacy fails, we may have no choice but to run. The ship is tough and she can take pounding but without shields we are venerable, and our speed may be the only defence we have” She added.

Shirley shifted her focus to her first officer, “Number One, will the Sentinel be able to keep radiation levels within safe limits while within the Nebula?” Shirley was clearly plotting her next move, but wanted to ensure that all of the necessary boxes were checked prior to entering into the uncharted area of space.

  • Captain Shirley Rogers, CO

Radiation shouldnt be too big a problem far as they could see, they would just need to keep an eye out for anything unexpected to avoid.

GM CockRoach

“Radiation levels will remain safe so long as nothing too unexpected happens. I’ll keep an eye on it,” Roman replied. He couldn’t see anything immediately dangerous, though he’d be watching closely. Overall he was quite confident it would be safe to start exploring the nebula.
