Rand looked over when he sighed, and not caring for the moment they were not alone, reached over and squeezed his hand gently in support and apology for bringing up such a horrid memory. She wouldn’t bring it up where others may get here, but she hoped he understood. Then, to change the subject completely, and maybe make him smile, “Has Mr. Dummy learned his lesson yet, or is he still taking a beating?”

Rand

Roman knew she didn’t mean to. He wished everything didn’t remind him of it, he felt bad when she felt the need to hastily change the topic. He felt her grab his hand and squeeze it, and he knew what she meant by it. He appreciated her not mentioning it aloud in such a public place. Her topic change made him smile. “He’s been given a break. I haven’t practiced in about a week. Maybe it’s time he tries learning again, eh?” He said.

~ Roman

Rand accepted that some topics would always be difficult for Roman. It bothered her, but only because she didn’t like to see him upset. Maybe he wasn’t aware, but Rand had noticed that things were better. Especially since Roman had started talking to Randy. She didn’t mind changing the subject, it was a rather dark topic and Roman had gone to effort to surprise her. “He’s so lazy he will have probably forgotten everything he was taught.” The conversation was humorously absurd and she grinned. “I may have to come watch.”

Rand

Randy was far more helpful than Roman would ever care to admit, he was too prideful and stubborn for that. But it wasn’t only his talks with Randy that has helped him to improve, it was Rand, too. His smile widened at her comment and he said, “I’m sure he has. And you had better, I think he learns better with an audience.”

~ Roman

Rand turned slightly red. She enjoyed the view while watching Roman practice. Apparently he liked having her watch. “Hmmm or maybe you just teach better with an audience.” She had enjoyed the few times they had gone to the gym, and she wouldn’t mind going again. Her foot was fine now so she could work on getting back to her normal routine.

Rand

Roman’s grin turned goofy as Rand’s face turned colors. “Maybe I do.” He’d like going to the gym with her too, even if they didn’t necessarily work together while there. And he did like when she watched. He got a better work out too, doing a bit of showing off for her. Her foot being better meant she’d be getting back to her morning runs and he’d like to start joining her for those again as well.

~ Roman

Rand couldn’t quite stop the soft chuckle at his goofy grin. “Well maybe I can arrange for an audience.” An audience of one. Not that Rand could stop people from being in the gym, but she wasn’t going to ask anyone to go watch with her. The idea made her stomach twist. Randy would find her reaction funny. She’d much rather run in the early morning when, usually no one else was out and about.

While they were talking, the observation lounge had filled up with crew taking their meal breaks. Looking for a change of scene while they ate. This included a handful of science officers, including the young man that partnered Alden on the bridge. The same officer who had told Scott she was 13 levels of crazy. Hearing Rand’s voice, but not really the words he glanced over. The young yeoman had never been spotted on the observation deck, and she probably could use a friend with Scott trying to spread rumors. He took a step in her direction and stopped short at the sight of Alden holding her hand. “If I hadn’t seen it myself …” he muttered and turned away. Scott was right. He wasn’t the only one who noticed though.

Rand

Roman was still smiling at her, having not noticed the attention they were drawing. “You do know when my usual practice time is?” He said. He assumed she did, but if she didn’t, then he wouldn’t want her to miss it. “We should go soon, or the rest of your pie’ll spoil,” he said, just thinking of it. They’d been there a while.

A medical ensign stood near Alden’s bridge relief partner turned when he heard the other Ensign say something. It was easy to spot what he was looking at. “The commander and Rand, eh? I wonder if Randy knows? They’re kind of cute together though,” she commented to herself.

~ Roman

Rand laughed softly again, “I think I might be able to remember when I’ve seen you there. Not like I was watching or anything.” She even managed to say that without blushing…well not too much. She was reluctant to agree to leave but he was right. She put the lid back over the pie. “Whenever you want. I actually have plenty of time today.” And she was happy to spend all that time with him.

“I don’t have anything else to do today, either. Perhaps we could go back to my quarters and you could teach me some more Gaelic? Or watch something, or really, we could just stay here a while longer?” Roman threw a few suggestions out. He didn’t really care what they did, he would just be happy it was with her.

Rand smiled at him, “We can go. Both sound lovely. Tha thu dìreach airson a bhith nad aonar còmhla rium.” She turned slightly red at whatever she said and quickly attempted to cover it by gathering items to clear the table so they could go.

Franks, Alden’s bridge partner, shook his head at Miller. “Randy is a nice enough guy, but I don’t think I want to be the one to tell him. But he and Rand are really close…I’m sure he knows…right?” Franks felt strange talking about it and moved away from the couple. He respected Alden and Rand and we’ll…he had no desire to get in trouble for gossiping. He shook his head at Miller, “They really are cute aren’t they?”

Rand

Miller moved away from them with Franks. “He probably does. They are, look at how they’re holding hands! I hope they hug before they leave, I’d love to see it,” said Miller. She was the hopeless romantic, cheesy type. She lived for that sort of thing. “I don’t think I’d ever expected the commander to be in a relationship.”

~ Roman

Franks shrugged, “I never considered the state of the cmdr’s social life.” The man was his boss and his first officer. He worked beside Alden a lot and enjoyed it. Alden, even when he was pulled away to deal with ship’s business was thorough and his work was easy to pick up and continue. He never spoke to the man socially though. Though maybe it made sense Alden and Rand. Both had a strong, strict work ethic and seemed to have no friends on board. He looked down at Miller and grinned, “Well if you need a hug, Miller, you should have said so,” and he swept in and hugged her, picking her up off her feet and turned her so she couldn’t see Alden and Rand anymore before putting her down.

Rand

Roman didn’t know what she said, but from the way she said it, and the color her face turned, he got the idea there was a reason she said it in a language he didn’t know and it made him smile anyway. He helped gather up the remainder of the things on the table and picked up the tablecloth. “Then let’s go,” he said, smiling again.

“Everyone needs a good social life,” Miller said with a shrug. Suddenly, she was swept off her feet in a rather powerful hug by Franks. “Woah, Franks, wait, no!” She said, but she was laughing and smiling. When he set her down, she couldn’t see Alden or Rand anymore. “Hey, Franks, you took away my fun,” she complained.

~ Roman

Franks grinned and clutched a hand over his chest, “Oh Miller, you wound me! Watching the crowd is more fun than being in my arms? Oh! My pride can’t take it.” His antics got good natured groans and chuckles from the few people around him.

“Maybe if we were dating,” Miller said, and then she giggled again, trying to see if she could spot the commander or Rand.

Rand stood, pie and tray in hand, and moved toward the door. She stopped to deposited the tray on the cart the mess hall placed there. The deck was more full than she’d been aware of. She stared studiously where she was going so she didn’t have to notice if anyone was staring at them. She knew they had to be. Small ship, only a few 100 people, people would notice. She just didn’t think she needed to confirm that fact for herself and make herself anxious.

Rand

Roman followed Rand, putting his tray where it belonged right after her. As they walked for the door, Rand was staring straight ahead, as if trying to avoid making eye contact with anyone in the room. The deck had filled up, it was a busy night. He could spot a few pairs of eyes on them, all of which turned away momentarily when he caught them looking. Roman knew it bothered Rand more than him. Putting his left arm around her shoulders, he pulled her closer to him as they headed for the door.

~ Roman

Rand looked up at him suddenly when he put his arm around her and smiled. She didn’t know why he suddenly did that, but it made her feel better. It wasn’t that she was nervous, not yet anyway, but lunch had been wonderful and she hadn’t been anxious at all. She wanted to stay that way, and that was why she was avoiding looking at anyone. Then she wouldn’t have to worry if she was doing something wrong. She never felt like she was around Roman, well maybe once or twice. She leaned into him for a pause and then kept walking.

Franks grinned, “Is that an invitation Miller?” He winked at her and then took her by the shoulders and turned her around just in time to watch Alden slip an arm around Rand’s shoulders and walk her out the door.
