Rand, pulled in close, looked up at him, and looked rather mischievous. She was stopped from answering as the lift stopped. They moved off the lift and another officer got on, quickly covering his surprise. Once past the lift she blushed before speaking, “I asked if you were in a hurry.”

Rand

Roman gave the officer a bit of a look, one of his “mind your own business” looks. Then he looked back to Rand. “Why wouldn’t I be? I get to spend all day with you.” It was cheesy, but true. If he were walking quickly it was because he couldn’t wait to get back to his quarters with her.

~ Roman

“In that case you would answer ‘tha’ - yes. Or ‘Tha mi gu dearbh’ - yes, I am.” She said each one clearly and exaggerating just slightly so he could hear how the sounds blended together. She stopped at her door just long enough to place the leftover pie inside. Then they walked the rest of the way down the corridor to his quarters. Rand stepped inside after he opened the door.

Rand

“Okay, tha.” His pronunciation of the sounds weren’t perfect but it was a simple word so it was harder to tell. He repeated it a few times trying to memorize it and get it right. He waited patiently for her to put the pie away and then opened his own door for her, letting her step in to his quarters first. Once inside, he took his normal seat on his bunk. “Are there any other easy words?” He asked, smiling.

~ Roman

Rand was disappointed when he let go of her. She wanted to sit next to him, but maybe out of habit maybe uncertainty, she moved over to the desk chair. She stood hand resting on the back of the chair considering his question. “àite -Ship, luch - mouse, rionnag - star”

Rand

Roman seemed almost as disappointed when she moved towards the desk chair. There was more than enough space next to him for her. But maybe she preferred the chair, so he didn’t say anything. He grabbed one of his notepads and scribbled the words down, trying to remember them. “So Nibbles is a luch?

~ Roman

“Almost, l..u..ch” The end sound had almost a hard ‘g’ sound at the beginning, but subtle. She grinned when he called the mouse Nibbles. “She is and Mushu would be dearc.” Seeing him writing the words down, she walked over, sat down, and gently took the pencil from him and added an accent mark to àite, wrote dearc, then she wrote each phonetically underneath. “Or we have dearc goo for the goo lizard. We don’t have a word for goo.” She leaned into him slightly while she wrote. She glanced up at him, seemingly mischevious, “nathair deamhan. Nathair means snake.”

Rand

“You know, the scientific name isn’t actually goo lizard, right?” Roman was smiling as he said it. She sat down next to him, and when she reached for it, he let go of the pencil. Next to hers, his handwriting looked sloppy - and his was some of the better handwriting in the labs. He could hear the difference between how he pronounced luch and how she did, but he didn’t know how to make that sound. She leaned into him as she wrote on his notepad, and he put his arm around her again. “If nathair means snake, what’s deamhan?” He asked. He figured she meant Mr Wyvern, and he was curious what exactly she was calling the venomous snake.

~ Roman

“You know I do think I remember reading that on a report, somewhere.” She replied about the goo lizard. She breathed deeply, happily when he put his arm around her again. She grinned up at him a moment and then very seriously translated for him. “‘Deamhan’ means demon.” Rand was being cheeky, a sure indication she was relaxed with him. She knew, as a scientist he would frown at such a fantastical twist on the animal, but she did it to tease him anyway. Plus Mr. Wyvern had a vicious streak.

Rand

Roman faked offense. “Mr Wyvern is not a demon!” His tone made it clear he wasn’t really upset. As a scientist he would normally frown on the making of fantastical twists on regular animals. But he also knew she wasn’t serious, she just didn’t like the crimson cobra, and she was teasing. He could see that in the way she was looking at him. He smiled and said, to mess with her, “A cute animal like him couldn’t be evil, could he?” Roman did actually like Mr Wyvern, though he was always cautious with the snake. There wasn’t an animal in his lab he didn’t like.

~ Roman

Rand sat up slightly, “Cute? The cutest animals are the most evil because you never expect it. I mean that round nose of his and the tiny adorbale eyes, and all that gorgous crimson - crùbach - color. Of course he’s cute.” She grinned writing another word, “Well maybe he’s not a demon to you, he’s scared of you.” ‘Olc‘ - evil. “Olc and this one is easy cute. One that the English borrowed from us. Math,” with a hard ‘t’ sound followed by a soft h, “is good.”

“His nice crimson colouring is quite literally a neon sign saying ‘I’m venomous, stay away’. He’s not evil at all,” Roman said, smiling. “And he’s not scared of me, he’d eat me the same as he’d eat you. He just likes your reaction to him.”

“Well…maybe he’s not olc but at least he comes with a rabhadh, a warning sign.” In truth Rand didn’t think he was evil or ‘bad.’ Mr. Wyvern was simply what he was supposed to be. An incredibly deadly predator.

She wrote another word leaning into him again. Her arm slipped around him and she turned that shade of pink he liked so much. “Gabh a-steach means embrace or hug.”

Rand

“That one won’t be hard to remember,” Roman said and smiled, pulling her closer once again. Her face was bright pink again, like it always seemed to be when they hugged. “One of my favourite things to do with you, best remember the word for it, eh?”

~ Roman

Tha, you should.” Rand liked the feel of his arm around her, warm and reassuring. “Tha gaol agam ort, Ròmanach.”

Rand

“I will,” he said, and smiled. The first word in her sentence sounded like ‘yes’ but he got the feeling that wasn’t right. The last bit sounded like his name. His quizzical look conveyed the same question: translate? His arm was still around her, gentle but tight, keeping her close.

~ Roman

Tha means yes, or in this case indicating a positive or affirmative to a stated emotion rather than a negative. Ròmanach means Roman, more specifically the Roman people. It works for your name too. Ort is the objective ‘you’.” She was enjoying teasing him, bantering back and forth. “You are smart, Ròmanach, you can figure it out.”

Rand

“I don’t get it,” Roman said, but he couldn’t keep his face straight. That mischievous little grin worked its way onto his face too early, and he gave into it. His smile widening, he wrapped his other arm around her and pulled her into a full hug. “I love you too, Miranda… And that’s another phrase you’ll have to teach me.”

~ Roman
