“Computer,” Haadok ducked into her office, “dim lights by 10%.”

Morning crept through Sickbay earlier than Haadok anticipated, leaving her to scramble through her reports in time for the Gamma-Alpha handoff. Though she sauntered into Sickbay without a second to spare, it seemed every medic and physician demanded a moment of her time. Doctor Byrd requested consultation on a Caitian presenting with severe dandruff and a sourer attitude. Fleeting questions about supply inventory, treatment options and drugs had Haadok whipping her head like an early 2000’s rockstar. And several nurses expressed disdain for some officers’ skilful evasion of annual physicals. Half an hour passed before the fatigued frenzy retreated to their respective quarters, and Haadok was left to consider the encyclopedia of knowledge they afforded.

We need a better system, Haadok mused as she poured herself a mug of black coffee and settled into her chair. Briefly, she mulled over the obstacles presented by Gamma Shift. Organisation. Effective communication. Adherence to and enforcement of protocol. Each was a product of the culture and natural discord of Gamma Shift. But, Haadok recognised there were ways to improve. Given any improvement required an assembly of now-resting Gamma Shift crew, Haadok resolved to help with a manageable problem: physicals.

Haadok sipped at her coffee and typed into her PaDD a string of simple commands. Instantly, a list of crew who avoided or were not yet scheduled for check-ins developed across the screen. Who shall I… A flicker of annoyance passed through her eyes when she realised several of Sentinel’s DHs and Command Staff rested at the top of her list. Sure, she’d served under several commanders with an affinity for dodging physicians, but it was no less bothersome each time. At least it provided a veritable starting point.

Stifling a sigh, Haadok leaned to the comm button and pressed her thumb to its face. “Haadok to Captain Rogers,” she began, “please stop by Sickbay at your earliest convience.”

— Haadok, CMO

This early in the morning Rand was making rounds to collect the morning reports. She didn’t have to do this, they could be submitted and then returned if there was an issue. This was a small way she could help avoid all that and let the departments get on with their day. She stepped into Sickbay, right after the commotion and Nurse Shrine was waiting for her as always. But hearing the CMO, Dr. Haadok, call for Rogers, Rand piped up, “If this is about her physical, I will clear her schedule to make time. If it’s not about her physical I will clear her schedule anyway.”

Yeoman Rand

Haadok hadn’t lifted her thumb from the comm panel before a curious proposition met her ears. Piqued, she turned and beheld Nurse Shrine and the young, fiery-haired woman she assumed to be one Yeoman Rand.

“Physical,” she affirmed in her swift approach. “Though I suspect the slightest utterance of the word motivates anyone to play ‘catch-up’ on paperwork.” A grimace crept into her tone but refused to touch her lips. “Apologies,” she dismissed brief tangent with a bow, “I’m Doctor Haadok. You must be Ensign Rand?” She posed the question slowly, attempting to dodge the inevitable fate that was misassigning another person’s name.

— Haadok, CMO (who’s not the best with names)

Rand grinned, “I am. Though I’m sure you’ve met my brother, En. Randy. If not, you’ll know when you have.” She was relieved that the doctor hadn’t attempted her last name. No one ever got it right. “Captain Rogers can’t claim paperwork, I do it all. Actually that’s why I’m here -picking up reports from Shrine.” Rand could empathize with the doctor’s frustration. If people would just follow protocol things would run much more smoothly. “I can have Rogers here by 0930. Earlier if you want her fasting.” Rand had to finish picking up the last of the reports. She could always go over them with Rogers after the physical if the doc wanted her in earlier.

Yeoman Rand

Haadok regarded Rand with an air of veiled appreciation. “I cannot say I’ve had the pleasure to meet Nurse Randy,” she spoke thoughtfully, “but now I’m curious.” She didn’t linger on the thought long enough to suppose what Rand meant, but she had common sense enough to know it’d be interesting. “Fasting, please.” Haadok added without hesitation. Fasting meant more medical liberty… and a possibly curt encounter with a hungry Captain. Fortunately, she lacked the emotional breadth and forbearance to mind. “I appreciate your help,” she bowed her head and glanced between them. “Until then, I’ll leave you to your rounds.”

— Haadok, CMO

Rand nodded, “Anytime Dr. Haadok.” Rand picked up the reports from Shrine and then was on her way, making her way up the decks to collect everything. She stopped by the Galley to hold Rogers’ breakfast and then made her way to the bridge, collected the last reports and then dropped them all off in her office. No reports in hand, meant no distraction.

At 0730 Rand, a bit earlier than normal, rang the chime at the Captain’s door.

Once the door was opened Rand greeted Rogers. “Good morning Captain. We’re starting early today. Time to go. You have an over due appointment with Medical.”

Yeoman Rand

friendly bump for Matt
