Roman had refused pain medication. He wasn’t going to take it unless he didn’t have a choice. The pain was distracting but he’d gotten a lot more done dealing with the pain than he had on the meds. There was still a lot to get done. He kept working after Rand left for her midday rounds, but it didn’t last long. Rand had opened Pipkin’s cage, and the little bunny wasted no time climbing onto Roman’s bed and doing her very best to distract him. By the time Rand came back, Roman’s PaDD and bed tray were pushed out of the way and Pipkin was in the middle of his chest. He was playing with the little bunny with one of the toys from the box, talking to her in that cutesy, high pitched voice as he did.

Rand stopped in the door way and grinned. “You look like you feel better,” she said as she stepped in and the door closed behind her. She set the trays down on the table along with her PaDD. “She’s not shy is she?” It was said with a hint of laughter as she tried to pet Pipkin, who sniffed her finger and then ignored Rand in favor of the toy. “Hungry?”

Rand

Roman looked up at her and smiled. “Who could ignore this little furball?” He wiggled the toy in front of her. “She is not. Kept putting her nose on me, hopping across my work area. She was definitely wanting attention.” He put the toy on the bed and then moved Pipkin, making space for the lunch tray. “I am hungry. You brought lunch?”

~ Roman

Rand wasn’t sure who would be able to ignore Pipkin when she was determined, but Roman was certainly not that person. “I did.” She grinned, and got up and grabbed the trays. Roman hadn’t complained of an upset stomach so the meal was a better selection than had been the day before. She handed one tray to Roman and then sat down on the bed next to him, her tray in her lap. After a moment Pipkin decided the trays were very interesting and her small nose was twitching along the edges. Rand laughed, sounding more relaxed than she had all day. “Yeah I didn’t forget you.” She pointed to a small covered container on Roman’s tray. When opened it would reveal apple peelings. “Chef was making apple pie today, he said I could take the peels.”

Roman’s lunch looked much more like good food than the last few days, a more typical meal for him. He started eating right away but paused when Pipkin started sniffing around their trays. Then he opened the container Rand pointed to and smiled again. “Oh- looks like Rand’s trying to spoil you again,” he said in the high pitched animal voice as he fed Pipkin one of the apple peels.

After eating Rand took what work Roman had finished and added it into the system. There was one part that she asked about because it didn’t make sense to her. It didn’t appear to be a cause of the pain or meds, but since she didn’t quite make sense to her, she asked to make sure she was inputting the information correctly.

Rand

Roman wasn’t done eating when Rand was, because Pipkin would not leave him alone after the apple peels. When she asked her question, he leaned over to look and answered her question. It was a small error, and he gave her the correct information.

Rand shook her head as Pipkin kept bothering him. He didn’t seem to mind though. “I’ll bring more next time. Oh!” She got up and reached into the cage and brought over a handful of hay. “Maybe she can munch on this while you eat.” Rand made quick work of the rest of the reports.

The hay was a good distraction for Pipkin and Roman finished the rest of his meal in peace. Soon Rand was finished with the reports and headed back out.

The rest of the day was a series short visits back and forth as Rand made her rounds and sat with Roman. There was plenty for him to do. On top of the missed reports, there was the observations and data from the biology lab and the animals to thoroughly read through, the video data from the drone of the elephant bears, the video feeds from the cameras, plus his own observations. After all that there were still a ton of samples for him to analyze and process once he returned to the lab. Rand delivered dinner, but wasn’t able to stay. She didn’t know if Roman would return to the lab the next day or not, but she had Chief Helpful drop of the chair she’d requested for him.

She was back before Randy arrived for his last session. She went over and sat on the bed and hugged him. “Ready to be done with this?”

Rand

Rand must have been busy the rest of the day because she was in and out of his room, her visits short. He was getting restless, but Rand kept him busy with his missed work. He was up out of bed once, being careful, and then back laying down before Rand got back. Finally, she was back before Randy and he hugged her back. “More than ready.”

~ Roman

She smiled, she was very ready for Roman to be done and to get back to normal. She hoped Elbbirt and Randy were right. That it would be like his leg had never been injured. “Did you take the anti-inflammatories? You have to have those for the dermal regenerator.” If he hadn’t she wasn’t worried, that meant the pain wasn’t as bad, but she knew Randy would fuss if they weren’t already in his system before this last session. She’d have to grab Pipkin and put her up and she really wanted to change into something other than her uniform. She was still wearing the same one from the day before because she hadn’t had time to change since she’d spent all day playing catch up. And no boots…she wanted out of the boots and check her ankle, and food. She’d skipped dinner. For the moment though she was content to sit there leaned against him.

“So after, if Randy doesn’t nix it, do you want to try and walk the deck?”

Rand

Roman nodded, he’d remembered to use the anti-inflammatories. They didn’t directly stop the pain but they did help indirectly and he knew Randy would need him on them for the session with the regenerator. He was sure she was hungry and tired but she wasn’t moving and he was happy about that, he liked just sitting there with her leaned on him. Roman smiled at her last question, he was more than ready to get out of his quarters. “That would be fantastic.”

Rand stayed there until Randy arrived and then with a quick kiss she put Pipkin in her cage and left to clean herself up and change. When she returned she was wearing a t-shirt and lounge pants, and her running shoes, carrying a sandwich. Randy had started the session and was monitoring the progress. Rand sat down on the edge of the bed, propped her foot on the chair, “Randy....” He looked up. “What did you do?” He glanced down at her foot, which was obviously still wrapped. “Miranda!” and he grumbled the whole time he took care of her. “I swear Alden, it’s a good thing she’s worth all the trouble.”

Rand

Roman was impatiently awaiting the end of the session but it felt slow going. Then Rand came back and told Randy about her foot and Roman had to smile as Randy went grumbled about as he took care of her. “Aren’t I more trouble than she is anyway?” He said, still smiling.

~ Roman

Randy didn’t even look up at Alden but he did glance up through his lashes at his sister. “He has no idea what he’s in for.” He shrugged, “You’re a pain the back side. She’s just trouble. For instance she knows I have to stay here to monitor your session and it’s late and she’s hoping I’m too tired to frog march her down to sickbay and will just deal with it here. But if Elbbirt finds out I’ll be in serious trouble for not taking her.”

Now Rand felt bad…but not enough to go to sickbay. “Aww come on Randy. It’s not that bad. If it was, you’d be calling a nurse to come get me.” Randy grinned, “I know. And you’re fine. Just keep it wrapped for a few days. It’s just weak. You’ve put that joint through a lot in the last few months. I don’t want you to have to have surgery on it, okay?” Rand couldn’t mistake the look Randy was giving her. She really was lucky. She leaned forward, hugged him, and kissed his cheek. “I promise Randy.”

“Yeah yeah, I know. I love you too.” He wrapped her foot and then ordered her to sit, which she already was and he plopped an ice pack on her ankle. “Sit for awhile, okay? It’s not like he’s going anywhere for a few hours.”

He smiled a little at the exchange between them. “Not going anywhere for a few hours?” Roman complained but he knew it was true. Randy had said before it would be six to eight hours before the pain dropped. But he was still going to complain about it.

The regenerator finished and Randy took the machine down and then, using his tricorder, ran scans of the leg. Finally when he was done, he smiled, slightly. “It looks good, very good, but Elbbirt will have the final say so. I know it’s the last session and your eager to move. But please use the crutches and go slow and wait 2 hours.”

Rand

The regenerator beeped to signal it was done and Randy took it down. Roman watched as he scanned the leg. He knew it was good news when Randy smiled. And then he shook his head. “Wait two hours?” That was the part he chose to say something about but he wasn’t big on using the crutches either. Everything was “go slow” and “wait” and “use the crutches” and while he was generally patient, he didn’t like not being allowed to move on his own and he was quite impatient when it came to waiting for that.
