Roman shook his head. There wasn’t anything he could think of that he wanted and really, he’d rather her stay there. They could sit together for the half hour Rand predicted Randy would be out in and that would be fine with Roman.

~ Roman

“Okay,” Rand nodded, her head moving against his shoulder. “Did you see anything interesting about those elephant bears from the drone feed?” She knew if she asked, Roman would let her see them, and maybe tomorrow she would. Right now she’d just rather listen while he talked about it. He was always so animated and excited when he was talking about his work, and she liked to listen.

Rand

Roman’s eyes lit up and he started to tell her all about them. “They’re quite a lot like earth elephants actually. The drone feed confirms they’re herbivorous. They seem to have a strong sense of community, they wouldn’t leave one of the herd behind…” He went on to explain, rather excitedly, all about them and everything on the drone feed. “I’ll have to show you tomorrow.” He finished at least. He hadn’t considered his leg giving out or him falling a possibility. And if for some reason someone decided he had to go back to Sickbay? They were going to have a difficult patient on their hands. He would have no part of that.

~ Roman

Rand listened quietly, not bothering to take notes, just enjoying listening for the moment. “I can’t wait to see it.” What she’d seen of them was fascinating. And the horns! Were like trunks and ears at the same time…well maybe not. And they made that weird squeaking sound but they were so big. Rand had all kinds of questions that she knew there would be no way to answer unless Roman and his team could study them up close. Despite everything that happened, Rand was excited at the thought of getting to go back. She had no idea if she’d be allowed, but if given the chance she would probably take it.

By the time Roman was done talking about the elephant-bears at length over an hour had passed. She was comfortable but she wasn’t going to back out of letting him get up to walk. She sat up and slipped her shoe back on over the wrapped ankle. “Whenever you’re ready.”

Rand

Roman had gone on longer than he meant to. Rand was still sitting against him and they were both comfortable. He’d gone on longer than he meant to, but he supposed that worked in their favour. As he finished, Rand sat up and started to pull her shoe on. Roman nodded, smiling. “Let’s go.”

Carefully, he swung his legs over the side of the bed, wincing as he moved his bad leg. The pain hadn’t gone down yet. By what Randy said, half the minimum time he was supposed to wait had passed, but the pain wasn’t supposed to be down for another four to six hours. He stood slowly, keeping his weight to his left side.

~ Roman

Rand grabbed one crutch. “Here, put it under your arm on your bad side. That way you can lean some of your weight on it if you need too. Then use it like your stick. That way you don’t have to try and balance on it, just use it for support.” They wouldn’t go far at first. Then she moved out of his way. It was all fine to want to help him, but in the small space all she’d end up doing is making him trip. So she stepped through the door, staying close enough to make sure she kept it triggered to stay open, while he made his way through. She grinned as she glanced down the corridor to the right. “Let’s go left, away from my quarters....I feel like I’m trying to sneak out of my parents’ house.”

Rand

“I don’t-” Roman began to argue, not wanting the crutch. But as he spoke he shifted weight onto the bad leg and the pain got worse and the leg nearly gave, so with an irrate huff, he grabbed the crutch and positioned it under his right arm. Then Rand cleared the way for him, standing near enough to the door that it stayed open. Roman moved toward the door slowly, using the crutch to support himself. Finally he was outside his quarters in the hallway for the first time since Randy had brought him up here from Sickbay. He smiled at her comment. “Instead of angry parents, we might have to deal with your bossy brother,” he said, looking right, then left. Then he started heading left, trying to pick up a little more speed.

~ Roman

Rand didn’t say anything, but she noticed. Of course she did, she noticed everything. She watched as he decided to use the crutch and made his way out into the corridor.
She stayed on his left, out of the way of the crutch and his leg. She wasn’t sure how much good she would be on that side if the leg gave out, but she didn’t want to trip him either. Rand bit back a laugh, “Honestly, I’d rather angry parents. Randy is so much worse than they ever were.” Randy had always been her self-appointed protector, but after…after she’d gotten sick it had gotten worse. Randy blamed their parents for what had happened to her. He didn’t speak to them for almost a year, not more than, “Rand needs this, or Dr Geurbahlt called, or some snide remark.” She rubbed her hands up and down her arms as if she was cold. Then Randy had given up his dream career to follow her here…and as much as she loved him being there, she hated herself that he felt the need to follow her. “Honestly, he always caught me when our parents didn’t. The curse of being a twin.” She smiled slightly, “But he was much worse than me. Blackmail for his antics kept me in cheese whiz for years.”

Rand

Roman smiled and shook his head. “You’ll have to tell me about it sometime. You two must have been quite the handful together.” He commented as he walked. Rand was staying on his left, out of the way. He preferred her there, if for some reason he did fall, he wouldn’t hurt her by falling on her. He was struggling, putting a lot of weight into the crutch or his left, and his pace was slow enough it was frustrating to him. At least he was out of his quarters, he reminded himself. The last thing he wanted was for Rand to change her mind and make him turn around and go back. “Aren’t siblings supposed to blackmail each other not to tell?” He said, smiling at her.

~ Roman

Rand grinned, “Oh we probably were. I mean between my animals and Randy’s charm no one in our clan was safe. Then Randy discovered ‘sass’ and all hell broke loose.” Rand didn’t look like the idea bothered her too much. “This one time, Randy was late to class…like really late…and we had this substitute…she was old and cranky and mean and just hated kids. She let Randy have it, 15 minutes she went on and on about how disrespectful kids were and never tried to do anything for themselves, and he was the worst example, couldn’t even show up on time. 5 minutes later Randy had her blushing like a highschool girl with her first crush and she just loved him.” Rand kept her pace slow not in a rush or hampered by his pace. He needed to get out and stretch and she was content to go however slow he needed.

Rand

Roman hated going too slowly. It made him feel like an old man with mobility issues. He smiled and shook his head once again. “I’m sure Randy’s charm stopped working so well in Starfleet. Certainly never changed my mind.” Which, of course, was why Randy had usually resorted to twisting Roman’s arm. Like the yearly physical last year. He could imagine the snobby substitute, Roman had more than enough teachers like that, and then he could imagine Randy making her change her attitude. For how similar they were in some ways, Rand and Randy were polar opposites in others.

~ Roman

Rand looked over at him momentarily speechless until she started laughing. “I don’t think Randy would ever consider ‘charming’ you in that way. Besides, you were his direct superior officer. He was going to work and work hard, not try to wiggle out of this or that.” Rand did NOT say that Randy charmed Roman just fine with his back and forth banter at her expense. Kept Roman from arguing over the meds, fidgeting during the session and even too the pain meds the last time he needed them. All because of Randy’s charm. It came in all forms and worked on most anyone. What people didn’t understand was charm did not mean flirting. “But Randy does have a certain knack with the senior citizens.”

They had made it about a quarter of the way around the deck, “Do you want to keep going or go back and walk in the other direction?” He seemed to be doing alright, albeit obviously in pain. Rand was content to stay out and walk as long as he was able, but if he felt better being a short distance from his door she was happy to pace this part of the corridor.
