Elbbirt staying out of the way would have been quite helpful. Most likely the best way would have been if Roman had been willing to let Randy help or use the wheel chair. But he wasn’t going to do that. Randy had supported the majority of Roman’s weight on the way to Sickbay. Roman had ended up leaning on him more than he meant to. But on the way back to his quarters Elbbirt and Randy together had been a little much. Not that Roman hadn’t needed help but it might’ve almost been better if they’d left him to fall or not on his own. He smiled at her comment. “The transporter isn’t really made for that.”

“Sure they are.” She grinned, “They are made for moving matter from point A to point B. And you are made of matter.”

Roman shook his head and smiled. “Don’t go getting any ideas on ways to move me around the ship.”

Rand just smirked and shrugged her shoulders. “Don’t know what you’re talking about. I was thinking about if I hurt my foot again.” Not likely, and she already had ideas…

“Did they say how long the pain would last before you know if it will be normal again?” Rand really didn’t like seeing him in pain. She liked it even less that she couldn’t do something about it.

When he was ready she disposed of the water bottles and held the door as they moved back into the corridor. She wondered how in the world they would make it to the lab tomorrow. He may not be cleared for duty but nothing was going to stop him from peeking in. Rand might have a headache by the end of the day.

Rand

“Randy said six to eight hours after the last time with the regenerator the pain would drop considerably, but no, I don’t think they know when we’ll know how it’s going to be permanently.” If it was like new, that would be best. But if it ended up like it had been before, Roman would be okay with that, too. Anything as long as he could walk himself and serve in Starfleet.

Well wasn’t that wonderful. He’d be feeling considerably better the same time she was leaving for her morning rounds. Who knew what mischief he’d get up to. “Is Elbbirt coming up here or do you have to go?” She’d move some things around so she could go with him.

Roman had several ideas on what to do once the pain dropped off and he could move a little more freely. But the first stop had to be his labs. “Elbbirt will come up and decide if I need to go.”

Rand nodded, “If you tell me when I’ll try to be back in time.” But after being late that day she could not be late again.

Roman nodded. “I’ll have Randy call. I’m not sure exactly when it will be.”

Another few minutes later, Roman grabbed the crutch and stood carefully. As he did, Rand got rid of the waters and held the door for him. He moved slowly out into the corridor and then to the left, heading down the hall. He wasn’t sure how he was going to make it down to the lab tomorrow. He’d find a way. He’d take three hours getting there if he had to. He wouldn’t be cleared for duty but he expected he would be cleared to not sit around his quarters all day and then he could at least peek in and see how things were going. Rand would have to work again, he could go while she was doing her usual rounds.

Maybe it was the rest or that the two hours had passed, or maybe Roman was trying to prove a point to himself, or he just wanted to get back to his quarters, but he seemed to be moving easier than he had before. Perhaps not at a regular pace but the second half seemed a bit easier. Maybe it was just her wishful thinking.

When they got back to his room she didn’t tell him to sit though she wanted to. She wanted him to sit back on the bed, put an ice pack on his leg and be still. She didn’t sit in the chair in case he wanted to sit up in the chair instead of the bed. Now that he was up and able to walk he probably wanted a shower and change of clothes. Should she leave so he could do that?

Rand

When they got back to the room, Roman chose to sit back on the bed. That would be a clue he’d made it hurt by taking the walk. He did want a shower and a change but he could have that in the morning. Sitting up against the bunk’s headboard, he rubbed his leg again. “It was good to finally get up and move a little.”

~ Roman

Rand nodded. “That’s the worst part, not seeing past the same four walls.” Once he was settled she grabbed two fresh ice packs and handed them to him. “So now that we’ve snuck out past the bossy big brother and returned, escaping discovery by the parents, what do you want to do next?”

Rand

Roman positioned the two ice packs against his leg and then he smiled at Rand. “If we’re really unlucky, Randy will do that thing where he reads his tricorder and then stares disprovingly.” He patted the bed next to himself, indicating for her to sit by him. “Well, we’ve been on a walk, it’s getting a little late, why don’t we just relax for a while?”

~ Roman

A little late? It was 0045. It was late. Well she supposed not, considering how late they usually talked. She was weary though after the day of running endlessly. Being late always left the rest of her day out of sorts. This time before she sat down she set an alarm for 0515. Then she settled in her spot next to him, but just as she was comfortable there was a loud metallic but slightly hallow BANG, followed by a slight rattle. She sat up slightly startled and glared across the room. Pipkin was staring back at her, and when she didn’t immediately get up, the little rabbit banged her powerful back feet against the cage again.

Roman had his arm part of the way around her as she was settling in, and when there was a BANG! from the other side of the room, he pulled Rand towards himself protectively. Then he realized it was only Pipkin being needy as the little rabbit kicked her cage a second time and he relaxed and let her go. “Somebody hates to be excluded, doesn’t she?”

Rand got pulled quickly and strongly back into Roman as the bang startled her and apparently Roman too. She’d seen him work out, so she knew he was fit, but she wasn’t quite prepared for the band of iron that pulled her into him. It gave her a startled but welcome feeling, and then relieved laughter as the both realized it was Pipkin making herself known. “Apparently.”

“Oh alright.” Rand stood up and walked across the room and opened the bottom door. “Nos stop that.” Rand walked back across the room, returning to Roman’s side, having grabbed the blanket while she was up. She shook it out and then leaned up against him.

Rand

Roman smiled as Rand leaned up against him and he readjusted the blanket to make it cover him better without taking too much of it away from Rand. “The best part about all this, getting so much time with you.”

~ Roman

Rand glanced up at him, through her lashes, a wildly playful look on her face, “So your saying if I want all this time together to continue, I should find a way to convince Elbbirt to keep you on medical leave?”

Rand
