And then the alarm was going off and Rand did not want to move. She reached for the control panel on her bedside table but instead her hand came into contact with Roman’s chest and that woke her up instantly. She stretched to reach and finally shut off the annoying, ear heating beeping. She didn’t sit up right away. The idea of playing up the injury to her ankle was tempting, but that would put things further behind and it was irresponsible. She had her duty, and it was important, if not glamorous. Just how she liked it. She sat there a minute in the semi dark and silence, but not too long she would fall asleep again.

Looking around for Pipkin she heard a faint rustling sound and realized she was in her cage, eating. “Roman? I have to leave soon.”

Rand

The alarm woke Roman up as surely as if it had been his own. He started to roll over and instead a hand made contact with his chest and he opened his eyes. Rand was still there, but it was early. Roman wasn’t usually awake for another hour or so. Then he stretched as Rand spoke to him. “Not going to play up your injury and skip duty after all? No long quiet day right here with me?” He was teasing her a little, he knew she wouldn’t do it. She took her duties as seriously as he did his and she hated being away from them nearly as much.

~ Roman

Rand, still curled up against him sighed. “I would but I think Randy would know I’m lying and he’d rat us out. Besides I think a long quiet day with you would be better on a day off. Besides, we both know Elbbirt is going to lift your movement restrictions today, and if you stayed in bed, he would be back and haul you down to Sickbay to find out what was wrong that you didn’t tell him. And I would be very…unhappy if he ruined our plans.” It was true, but she was teasing him back. “Go back to sleep. I’ll bring breakfast and tea back with me.” She kissed him before sliding off the bed and slipping her shoes on.

She walked into her quarters, quietly. She didn’t want to wake Randy. She grabbed a clean uniform and headed for the shower. Today she wasn’t late, so she wasn’t flustered, so she was in a good mood, so it was a better morning. Even though she was in a rush to get back.

Rand

Roman smiled sleepily. “Let’s see him try hauling me back there.” He rolled back over briefly after she got up. Like Randy had predicted, the pain in his leg was down. Not gone, but about what it had been before Kelmao. With any luck it would keep going away. Moving was going to be a lot easier.

After Rand had returned to her own quarters, Roman got himself up. He was already awake, might as well start the day. He was careful and slow at first as he stood off the bed, but he found that he’d been right - moving was a lot easier when the pain wasn’t so bad. He tried walking with no support, and he still had a limp, a very noticeable one, but he could move slowly on his own. Walking on it made it hurt more, but after the pain he’d been in since the neuro block was removed the pain now did little as a deterrent. It was easier if he supported himself with something. The wall or one of the crutches.

He abandoned the crutches yet again. Using the wall for support, he made it to the bathroom with little problem. He had his own shower and when he was finished he got a fresh set of clothes. Then he nearly autopiloted himself straight down to the labs but he stopped himself and sat on the bed instead.

It was about an hour later, maybe a little less, when there was a chime at the door. Pipkin had been busy investigating and attempting to get into things, but Rand had done an exceptional job proofing Roman’s quarters. The only thing she hadn’t been able to find a fix for yet was how to block her from the door when it opened. But so far it hadn’t been too much of an issue.

The door opened to Ellbirt holding a larger than normal med kit. “Ah Cmdr Alden. Are you as ready to stop seeing me as I am to stop seeing you? And where is Randy? I thought he’d beat me here.”

“Right here, Doc.” Randy said as he stepped in and looked around. “Where’s the fuzz ball?”

Randy

Roman stood by Pipkin’s cage, hand on the wall, most of his weight on his left side, when Elbbirt entered. “Doctor. As I recall, I was ready to stop before we began.” He said, looking over. Pipkin was by his feet, and he pointed the little rabbit out to Randy. “Over here.” Then he looked back to Elbbirt. “I’m sure we’ll both be glad to be out of each other’s hair, when you return me to full duty.”

~ Roman

Randy stepped further into the room, now confident he wouldn’t step on the tiny bunny. Randy grabbed the kit from Elbbirt and took it to the table and opened. It looked like a chemistry set. Elbbirt chuckled, “I think we’ll all be happy when you are back to full duty. Alright let’s see then. If you would, have a seat on the bed and stretch your leg out.”

Roman limped back over to the bed, back to his old tricks of trying to make the limp look less prevalent than it was in front of the doctor. Then he sat on the bed, lifted his left leg up, and then slowly his right, stretching it out as asked.

Elbbirt took a tricorder scan, detailed and lengthy. “Randy I want a blood sample from his leg.” Randy grabbed an empty vile and came over to take it.

Rand arrived with food and black tea, the way he liked it. She even brought coffee to bribe Elbbirt and Randy. Then she snagged the chair back, before Randy sat in it, and sat at the computer to work on her reports while they waited.

After scanning his leg Elbbirt did a thorough check of all his vitals. Then he was at the table with the chemistry set, ordering Randy about. “Do a range of movement and muscle strength assessment.” Randy went back over to Alden and walked him through a series of stretches and leg positions to see how much movement he had and then, “Alright,” he sat on the end of the bed by Alden’s foot with a grin, “now you get to kick me.” He was holding a pressure plate that would tell him how much force his leg was able to generate.

Rand, Randy, Elbbirt

Roman thought watching Randy get ordered about by Elbbirt was pretty entertaining. He let him take the blood sample without a fight. He was watching Elbbirt do all the scans. His vitals looked good: no more racing heart or high blood pressure, normal respirations, everything was reading well too. His vitals might have given away his nervousness but there was nothing concerning. Then Elbbirt moved away and gave Randy another order. The muscle assessments weren’t so entertaining. He could accomplish almost all of the positions and stretches, and some of them he could not do very well or not with the proper form - at least not yet. Many of them hurt to attempt, some of them he moved his leg slowly for, like he had to pull it up onto the bed in the first place. Then there was that last test that was a little more fun. Roman returned Randy’s grin as he kicked the pressure plate, following any other directions from Randy. The force generated would read a little low, nothing too concerning. The muscle was new and his leg still hurt, those would likely factor in, and it should improve with physical therapy and patience.

Watching Roman grin and then kick Randy, Rand attempted to hold back her laughter, but it escaped as an amused snort. Despite working away at her reports she was paying attention.

Elbbirt leaned up against the wall. “Your vitals are normal which is excellent news. Your blood work shows no more toxins in your system, so that means we got all the damaged tissue and the anti-toxins worked. The sample showed no blood clots. That doesn’t mean they are all gone, but that will take time. We made need images in a couple weeks to make sure there are none lingering. In the mean time if you have any red, swollen, or hot spots anywhere on your body you need to tell us.” He stabbed Alden with a very Stern gaze. “Blood clots are dangerous and not to be played with. If you can’t give me your word to report it, I’ll have you in for mandatory imaging every day till they are all gone.”

Roman glanced away and mumbled, “You’ve got my word…” If he did end up with any of those symptoms he was sure he’d be subjected to a bunch of imaging anyway. But he was also sure Elbbirt would keep to that promise if Roman wasn’t able: imaging every single day until he can’t find one more even suspicious looking spot. Promising to report it was better than that.

And if Rand noticed she would certainly tell. She knew Roman hated sickbay and she would never needlessly drag him there, but that was better than a clot getting to his heart or lungs. He’d been beyond lucky this time.

“The scans of your leg look excellent. The tissue is fully regrown and there is 100% oxygen saturation and blood flow to the area. You’ll start physical therapy this afternoon. Dr. Sovak will determine the terms of your light duty and how often you see him. Your leg is still inflamed so continue the anti-inflammatories for another 2 days. After that I would prefer you attempt rest and alternating heat and ice first. If it won’t stop hurting then use the meds. After 5 days if it still is hurting without cause we will reassess.”

“For now you can move about as you are able, just no running, jumping, catching, high strain martial arts. And absolutely no catching accident and danger prone yeoman.” Elbbirt and Randy thought it was hilarious, but at least they didn’t laugh. Rand turned bright red and there was a roaring in her ears. She should go back to work…

Elbbirt and Randy packed up and left.

Rand, Randy, Elbbirt

Roman gave an annoyed sigh at starting physical therapy so quickly. He hated it. Hopefully Doctor Sovak would go easy on the restrictions. He nodded to the rest of the direction. “We both know I’ll try just about anything before meds.” Then he glanced at Rand and smiled. “No carrying yeoman either, then?” He asked.

Randy’s head shot up, “Carrying yeoman? Rand, a bheil thu air a bhith a’ cumail sgeulachdan air ais bhuam? (have you been holding back stories on me?)” Rand just shook her head, ignoring Randy, glancing, totally flustered at Roman.

Then they were gone and he was glad they were as he looked at Rand again. “Sounds like good news at least.”

~ Roman

With Elbbirt and Randy gone Rand relaxed some, and she got up and walked over to sit next to him. “Very good news. And no more strict bed rest. And hopefully your appt with Dr. Sovak will be easy today. Hopefully he will clear you for duty.” She sighed softly, “I have to get going. I have to go check on Franks and then meet with Rogers. But since you’re cleared no more eating in bed. You’ll have to go to the table. Aanndd there might be something on the tray for Pipkin.” She kissed him, reluctant to go, but in the end she had to.
