The chair was perfect… for a chair. Roman detested sitting all day. But at least it allowed him to do more than sit at a desk all day. The first thing he did upon entering the lab was head for Mushu, checking his food and enclosure for cleanliness. It had been kept immaculately, of course.

Then he went around to each of the other animal’s enclosures and checked them, limping on his crutch around the lab, and then he sat down in the new chair, resting his foot on the foot rest. Once Franks was finished with Nibbles’ cage, Roman motioned him over to talk to him.

Rand was glad to see that he liked the chair. Oh he was by no means happy to use it, but at least it was going to help. She got it, more than he probably realized…(she didn’t know Randy had told Roman about her faltered recover and months of bed rest)…but there were ways to get around it and not be quite so frustrated. Once Franks was finished with Nibbles she left the lab. She’d done all of her observations for the day and Roman didn’t need a baby-sitter.

Making sure he hadn’t left anything amiss, Franks walked over to Alden’s desk. “Cmdr?”

Franks

Roman was getting acquainted with his chair, adjusting the height and everything. “Your work maintaining the lab while I was away has been excellent.” He complimented. “I’m authorized for light duty, I’ll be in as normal starting tomorrow, I’d like to spend the rest of today’s shift catching up.”

~ Roman

Franks nodded, trying not to show how relieved and proud he felt that Alden was pleased with his work. It wasn’t a smug feeling, but unlike some of the other younger science offers, Franks had never been needlessly proud of his work. He had a couple years on the younger ones, and he’d always worked hard. He appreciated how hard Alden was on them, so to be complimented for his hard work he knew he’d earned it. Alden didn’t praise needlessly and those of weak constitution had no business in Alden’s department. He’d teach them, help them get better and support their work, but he would not baby them. Franks appreciated that.

There was a slight sagging of Franks shoulders…of relief. He’d enjoyed the chance to stretch ‘test’ his career but he’d only been shadowing Alden on the bridge and covering the lab on Alden’s days off. He’d not expected to step into the role so soon, and though he did his best, and Rand was a huge help to answer what he didn’t know, he was more than ready to give it back to Alden. “We’re glad to have you back, Cmdr. Is there anything I can do to help you get caught up?”

Franks

Roman did not give praise easily, but from what he had seen, reports were finished on time and to standard, the labs were neat and clean, and all the animals had been adequately cared for. It was almost as if he’d never been gone at all. And that meant he’d be more likely to feel comfortable handing the lab off to Franks the next time he needed to. “Finish briefing me on anything I missed, that way I’ll feel more caught up tomorrow when I’m back in,” Roman replied.

Franks nodded, “Just a moment, Cmdr.” He stepped over to his work station and came back with the stack of reports. He didn’t want to miss any detail large or small. Even though he knew he’d remember everything from the biology lab because he worked there, he had to go over all the labs. He flipped through each report going over each thing he had not gone over with Alden earlier. It took all of the remainder of the shift and longer. Once Franks got going, he was very enthusiastic about…well, everything.

Franks

Roman didn’t notice as 1700 rolled by and passed as he went over everything with Franks. By the time they were done, it was 1900, and the day shift had swapped for the nights. Franks was insanely detailed about all the labs, and that was what made it take so long. It was a good thing, but when Roman realized how late it was, he stood suddenly, Rand was probably done by then. “We’ll finish this up in the morning,” he said, grabbing his crutch as he stacked the remaining work back on his desk.

~ Roman

Franks looked up suddenly and look confused when Alden suddenly stood up and he stood up as well and scanned each of the animal enclosures and then the lab tables looking for something amiss. Then seeing Alden stacking his work Franks looked at the clock. Crap he was late. Miller was going to be SO mad at him. “Yes, Sir. Have a good evening.” Franks stacked his work, checked his work station and then left.

Rand had actually passed by the lab once or twice while Roman was working with Franks. By the time they were finally done Rand had finished early for the night. Assuming no one decided they needed her. She saved the reports, submitted those that needed it, took care of a few small things and then logged out of her console and left her office. She knocked at Roman’s door but he didn’t answer so she went back to her quarters and flopped dramatically onto her bed before sitting up and taking off her boots and flopping back again. Randy was who knows where so at least she got to avoid his sass for the moment.

Rand

Roman headed upstairs and peeked into his own quarters, and then seeing it was empty besides Pipkin, he went and knocked quietly on Rand’s door. Most of the work in the lab had been paperwork and reports, though Roman and Franks had also gone and looked at a few things around the lab. Tomorrow was going to be a long day, getting caught up on everything. Tonight, he’d just gone over it other Franks.
