Roman headed upstairs and peeked into his own quarters, and then seeing it was empty besides Pipkin, he went and knocked quietly on Rand’s door. Most of the work in the lab had been paperwork and reports, though Roman and Franks had also gone and looked at a few things around the lab. Tomorrow was going to be a long day, getting caught up on everything. Tonight, he’d just gone over it other Franks.

~ Roman

Rand heard the knock and a smile lit up her face - only one person knocked on the door like that. She bounded up off the bed and answered the door. Still in uniform, it was not quite so pristine after long day, stockinged feet, and her hair half out of it’s bun where she’d flopped onto the bed and had no idea it had gotten messed up, still smiling. “Hi.” She thought he looked less aggravated now. “You manage to get anything done with Franks jabbering about all his ideas?”

Rand

Roman leaned on the doorway like he sometimes did, passing his crutch back and forth between his two hands idly. He smiled, he could hear her footsteps rush toward the door, and his smile widened when the door opened. He had worn a uniformed shirt that day, and he looked a lot more like his usual self, his hair brushed neatly and his uniform spotless. But despite his own perfection, Rand’s messiness after a long day was cute. “We managed to review most everything from the last week, there’s a little more to tackle tomorrow,” he said, “I hadn’t realized how late it was, or I’d have been here sooner.”

~ Roman

Rand grinned, she couldn’t help it, a whole week off duty plus 3 days away on a landing team and the first thing he did was paperwork. She must be rubbing off on him. Of course he would review everything first. He needed to know what was going on before he could delve in. She was sure he had spent a little bit of time with Mushu. The little lizard had been transfixed on him. Of course she wasn’t sure how much of the paper work actually got reviewed. Franks was rather enthusiastic. When she’d helped him, he’d gone on and on and on about it all. Rand was lost 5 minutes in. “It’s okay, I’m glad you were able to get some things done. And now I’m finished for the day.” Then she realized he was just standing there, on his leg. “Oh, you probably want to get off your leg and Pipkin probably wants out.” Glancing down at her uniform, “Umm…let me change. Do you want to eat?” Of course he did that was a stupid question and he probably didn’t want to walk all the way back down the galley. “I’ll get food…ummm I mean if you want me to.” She was flustered and not sure why - she was just happy to see him, but she’d seen him a couple hours ago…she was being silly, honestly she needed to take a breath, but he was grinning at her like that again.

Rand

Roman stood there and let Rand go on, his grin turning more playful the longer she went. “Let me walk down with you, I want to get used to being up and moving again. Come and get me after you’re changed and then we’ll go.” He said, putting his crutch back under his arm and getting off the doorway. “Then we’ll let Pipkin terrorise us when we get back with dinner,” he said and smiled again.

~ Roman

“Okay.” He was going to walk down with her. She stepped back and let the door slide closed when he turned toward his quarters. Was that too much on his leg? Sovak said no prolonged walking…well he was going to sit while she changed so he had a break. That counted. He was going to walk down with her…off duty. That made her smile, she liked it but she felt butterflies fighting for room in her stomach.

She grabbed a change of clothes, slacks and a blouse, and caught sight of herself in the mirror…and groaned loudly. What happened to her hair? And Roman saw it! No wonder he was grinning like that. She groaned again…how long had she been running around the ship like that? Surely Rogers would have said something if it had been like that for their meeting. Changing quickly she then brushed out her hair and left it down, after fighting with getting the pins out.

A few minutes later she knocked softly on Roman’s door.

Rand

Roman turned as the door shut and headed back to his own quarters, sitting in the chair with his leg stretched out while he waited for Rand. He double checked how he looked in a mirror and, satisfied, set it down and waited quietly until there was a soft knock at the door. It was a few minutes later, but a short break was better than no break, he was sure. He stood and let the door open and then smiled at her as he stepped out.

~ Roman

Rand smiled back at him, he was ready to get going. She remembered that feeling…she really had to stop thinking about her time in the hospital. Even now after 5 years it still upset her, still gave her the worst anxiety attacks if she thought about it too much or too hard. She moved over to his left side to stay out of the way of the crutch. She didn’t think he would fall, he was doing very well, but she didn’t want to get in the way of it. “Anything interesting happen in the last week?” As far as what Rand had missed with her own duties nothing interesting had happened, but she’d enjoyed reading all the reports. Thanks to her long discussion with Roman she understood most of the complex stuff from science but engineering just bored her, and the medical stuff…well she got all that from Randy and no matter how boring it might be Randy had a knack for making it the most interesting thing in the world.

Rand

Roman told her about some of the things Franks had told him as they walked. None of it was that interesting, business as usual, but Roman talked about it like Mushu had grown wings and learned to fly. Some of it Rand probably already knew. His pace was still slow but he was getting better at using the crutch. Soon they were down in the galley.

~ Roman

Roman’s pace was steadier and he was moving easier. Rand listened as he talked and bit back a grin as he talked about Mushu. Entering the galley Rand went straight for whatever the cook had made. She could eat the synthesized protein cubes and the flavor wasn’t bad. What Rand hated was the food waste. Whatever Cook made that the crew didn’t eat was thrown out and fresh food was at a premium on a star ship. So even if she didn’t like it she ate what was made.

“Rand you’re early for yourself tonight. You finally get caught up or just that hungry?” Rand looked over the offerings and opted for beef vegetable soup and a pimento cheese sandwich. “Both, Chef. And it looks good tonight.” The chef shrugged but smiled, “I do my best. Oh and since you’re on this raw vegetable and fruit kick, I saved you some.” He put a small lidded container in her tray and then turned to Roman, “Good evening Cmdr. Nice to see you out again. What can I serve up for you?”

Rand

“Same as Rand,” Roman replied to the chef, grinning as he called it Rand’s raw fruit and veggie kick. Roman usually ate whatever the cook made, it was better than the tasteless, odd texture of the protein cubes. Roman usually preferred to take the cubes if he was eating in the lab, because they weren’t messy. Once had his food, watching him figure out how to balance his tray and his crutch was a bit of a show. He attempted to steady the tray with his left hand so his right was free to use the crutch, trying not to spill.

~ Roman

Rand usually carried two trays whenever she stopped for food. Hers and Rogers’ or Roman’s or Randy’s or drinks for the bridge. She started to offer to take the tray, but was worried it might offend his sense of self reliance. So she asked, “Would you rather just eat here?” If not she would just take the tray when they got into the corridor. There was plenty of room on one tray for her to but both their meals. But there was an empty table near them by the wall.

Rand

Roman shook his head. Normally he wouldn’t mind but right now, he’d prefer the privacy of his quarters. As he went to take a step with it, the tray tilted and broth from the beef veggie soup sloshed out and down the front of his uniformed shirt. Roman let out a quiet curse, thrusting the tray towards Rand. “Take this for a minute, will you?” He said, reaching for napkins from a nearby dispenser.

~ Roman

Rand slipped her hand under the tray and lifted it out of the way. She was no professional server but she’d figured out the art of carrying multiple trays through busy corridors. She set them both down on the closet surface and in quick order had everything moved to one tray, Chef had brought her a new bowl of soup and the offending bowl and tray were whisked away. Making sure the items were evenly distributed Rand lifted the tray putting her left hand flat under the middle and use her right to steady it if needs be.

The spill wasn’t horrible and he could change when he got back to his quarters. If Rand thought about that too much she might blush.
But she knew how he felt about presentation of self. “You have an extra in your office across the corridor in case of lab accidents, don’t you?”

Rand
