Shirley sat at the head of the table in the conference room next to the computer reviewing Science Officer Sweeney’s personnel file. She wore her lime green colored duty uniform top accompanied by black pants and boots. She had made herself quite comfortable as she had her legs crossed casually and appeared to be focused on the task at hand. A few moments passed before she rose to her feet and approached the communications panel on the door by the entrance to the room. She pressed the button and spoke in a calm tone,

=o= Ensign Sweeney, report to the conference room. =o=

Captain Shirley Rogers, CO

=o=Aye Captain.=o= David was confused and concerned. He was an ensign in the science division, not someone who should be of any interest to the Captain of an entire ship. He asked someone to finish what he was doing in the lab and slotted a communicator on his belt, just in case. He headed up to the conference room, at a brisk walk. Very brisk. He wasn’t sure if this was the norm for Captain Rogers with new personnel, but he couldn’t imagine she could keep up with that many new arrivals.

David stopped at the conference room door. He straightened his uniform shirt and cracked his neck. Deep breath. Worst she can do is send you back to spacedock. She can’t fire you out an airlock. Probably. he entered and said “Ensign David Sweeney reporting as requested, Captain.”

Shirley had been reviewing David’s personnel file on her computer screen as a refresher while she waited for him to arrive. She had already reviewed him the night before, but wanted to highlight a few points as her green eyes scanned over the key points of the file. After closing out the document, she looked up from the screen and a smile spread across her lips as she gestured to the chair next to her. Her tone of voice was definitely positive and uplifting as she appeared to be genuinely happy to be in the room with him, “Mr. Sweeney, please have a seat. We have a few things to talk about.” She raised her hand dismissively, “Do not worry, you are not receiving a Court Martial or anything like that today or hopefully ever. I want you to tell me about your research here on the Sentinel. What do you enjoy the most in your field of expertise? How will your research benefit the crew overall?” She then paused as she looked forward to hearing his response.

“Well Captain,” David smiled a bit “the immediate practical applications of chemistry are hard to predict. The first uses of radium was just to make things glow in the dark. I’d like to approach synthetic dilithium, but what might happen during research, I can’t say. People have been trying to make synthetic dilithium since it was introduced into the warp equation. Usually they discover something different in the process or nothing at all.”

As David spoke, Shirley recalled how much she dreaded taking chemistry back at the academy while she toned out his explanation in her mind. In fact, she tried to get around chemistry through taking an environmental science course, however her advisor still would not permit it. She was a security officer full and through, not a chemist and had no interest in the subject either unless she was in a life or death situation. If it came to that point she would be all ears listening to Ensign Sweeney’s guidance. However, Shirley had experience as an actress in her Vegas days of the past and easily acted pretended to be interested in the Ensign’s research as she nodded her head, “Ah, wonderful Ensign. I look forward to reading some of your research.” Shirley smiled at David to convey her false enthusiasm. She tapped her finger on the table, “Now, did you have any questions or concerns for me? I have an open door policy for all of my crew.” She made direct eye contact with David and conveyed her interest in being their for him quite effectively as she truly did mean that for all of her crew.

  • Captain Shirley Rogers, CO

“For you personally Captain? No ma’am.” David said with a slight laugh. “I’m still a little surprised I was assigned here to begin with.” He hesitated. “Ma’am? Did you call me here to ask about my work? All due respect, you’re the first person who wasn’t a chemist to be interested.”

Shirley nodded once, “Very well, what will you be working on in the lab today? Have you met with Commander Alden yet?”

“Yes ma’am, I have met Commander Alden. We had a good conversation the day I arrived. I think my day will be split between my own research and whatever the science department is working on.”

She crossed her arms, “And I am interested in all of my crew and enjoy hearing about their own interests as well.”

  • Captain Rogers

“I appreciate that Captain. I suppose, on a ship this big, I didn’t expect the Captain to have the time or inclination to take an interest in everyone onboard. D’you mind if I ask, how you like being a ship captain?”
