The transporter swirled to life moments after the communication had been received that the new Chief Engineer was arriving. As the lights coalesced and the hum of the pad quieted, the transporter officer looked up and smiled at the figure on the transporter pad. The figure, though, was not smiling. Transporter travel left them feeling nauseated due to their unique connection to space-time.

At a few inches over six feet and well-muscled, the figure would have been the poster figure for an human… except for the large forehead and web-like pattern of ridges crossing it from ear to ear. Standing there in the red Star Fleet uniform with Lieutenant Junior Grade rank, the individual was steadying themself, as if they were sea-sick. “Lieutenant Junior Grade Riss Ch’ethyniq. New Chief Engineer. I would like to drop off my bags and go see the Captain, if everything is in order?” he asked as he approached the transporter control console. The Ensign looked concerned, but Riss smiled slightly and said “Relax, Ensign. You did a fine. Transport makes my head feel like it’s being spun in six different directions at once, is all.” and he winked and picked up his bag and walked to the door and out.

Riss, CE

A young Ensign in gold with a plaid sash pinned to her left shoulder and tucked into the small of her back, a PaDD hanging from a strap across her shoulders, and a communicator clipped to her belt stepped off the access ladder onto the deck, took a breath and stepped toward the Lt. “Lt Riss Ch’ethyniq welcome aboard. I apologize for the delay. The lifts are down, again.” She held out her hand, “En Rand, Cpt’s yeoman.” If she was phased by his appearance it didn’t show. She was far too well trained for that, and she had seen the basic personnel file after all. She was admittedly curious though. She had never met a K’normian before and Rand was always eager to learn about new people and their people. However right now her job was to welcome him on board and provide whatever assistance he needed. She lifted the PaDD and held it out with a stylus. “Confirmation of arrival and this data disk.” She held up an orange one. “Last CE left it for you, and asked me to deliver it.”

Riss signed the PaDD and took the disk. “Thank you.”

Rand nodded with a smile and then after a few taps she pulled a disk out of her PaDd and handed it to him. “Duty schedule, meal rotations for the Galley, map, Engineering Roster, senior staff list and schedules, and schematics. The disk from the previous CE might have that as well, but I don’t know what’s on it.”

“Would you like to see your quarters first? I hope you don’t mind climbing.”

Yeoman Rand

“Climbing? Why… oh, the lifts. Why aren’t they working? And for how long?” he asked and looked down the passageway towards the lift doors, slowly turning and walking towards them. As he moved, he unzipped his bag and pulled out a clear case filled with an assortment of tools and hand-held equipment.

Riss, CE

Rand paused, “Something about the relays shorted and caused the brakes to lock down. Honestly Lt. It’s beyond me. I can pull up the work order for you if you would like.”

Yeoman Rand

Riss looked back at her as if she’d just said ‘Deltans have a beautiful head of hair.’ “Really? We have people scampering up and down ladders beca- never mind.” and he gave an exasperated humph and went to an access panel by the lift doors. He set down the bag, put the case on top of it, opened the case, and pulled out a small tool. In less than ten seconds the panel was off and the new CE, still in uniform, was crouched down and shining a light in and up behind the bulkhead. He mumbled something in an familiar tongue, but then reached back and laid his hands on another tool in the case and set the first in its appropriate spot… all without so much as glancing backwards. He reached up, twisted so that he was up to his shoulder in the mechanisms and systems within the wall while his head was outside and his eyes were closed. Then there was a POP and the lights on the lift came on, accompanied by the sound of the lift moving to it’s designated starting position. Riss pulled his arm out and set the device in the case, closed it, dropped the case in the bag, closed the bag, and stood up. “Shall we?” and the doors to the lift opened and he stepped inside.

Riss, CE

Rand wasn’t sure what to say to his obvious exasperation and was glad when he said ‘never-mind’. Rand wasn’t mechanically inclined and only knew enough to point and say ‘that’s the engine’. She wouldn’t mind expanding on the basics taught at the academy if given the chance. To say she was impressed with how quickly he fixed the lift, was a slight understatement. She’d been running up and down ladders all day. She stepped into the lift twisted the handle when the door closed, “Deck 4. Would you like to see engineering first or report to the captain, or medical?” Rand had met enough DHs on boarding to know they had their own idea of how to approach their onboarding. She tried her best to accommodate.

Yeoman Rand

Riss looked at her and gave her an appraising look. “Well… as the ship’s Yeoman, you should know everyone and their temperaments, yes? What do you think? Where should I start?”

Riss, CE

“Well the captain is in the bridge at the moment. She is always happy to speak to anyone at any time, but you are likely to get more out of her if you wait till lunch. She likes getting to know the new crew over a meal. Cmdr Alden, our XO and CSO, starts quarterly reviews of the science labs after lunch. Paper work makes him… irritable. Right now he’s working in the biology lab. He is usually in the biology lab unless he has bridge duty. Medical is hit or miss, depends on the day. And Engineering, well I guess that depends on if you want to surprise them or not. So given that I would suggest starting with Cmdr Alden.”

The lift arrived and Rand made her way around to the forward section of the deck and stopped at a door. “This is you Lt.”

Yeoman Rand

Riss nodded and said “Its actually 1st Lieutenant. I am an officer in the K’normian Stellar Navy. Part of a goodwill, officer-exchange program. I did attend your Academy… hence my selection.” He opened the door and stepped inside. After a quick appraisal, he said “Adequate.” and dropped his bag on the floor. “Shalle we continue? Where to next?”

Riss, CE

Leading the way down the hall, back toward the lift, Rand paused outside on the starboard aft side. “This is the machine shop.” Most of the new engineers onboard wanted to at least peek inside, and since they were already on the deck she paused there.

Riss stuck hi head inside and let out a slightly disappointed hmphf before turning back and nodding that they could continue.

Getting back on the lift, “Deck 9.” They would start there. “The rec hall and galley are on this deck. There is a request form posted in the rec hall if there is anything you would like to have. Be sure to let Chef Gorshin know any dietary needs you have, and your favorite foods. He enjoys learning to make new things and,” here her voice took on a very accurate copy of the Chef’s Spanish accent, coming across respectful and no hint of mocking, “as he says, ‘Out here a taste of home is important’.” She stopped by both areas to give Riss time to look or get food if he was so inclined.

Yeoman Rand

Riss looked in with a critical eye and nodded slightly. “Does the crew eat all together? Or is there a separate mess for the officers?” he asked.

Riss, CE

The yeoman shook her head in the negative. “We only have the one Galley on board. Though trays can be taken out if you prefer to eat elsewhere. Sometimes the captain has senior staff meetings over a meal in the conference room on Deck 3.”

Directly across from the Galley was the rec hall. “There is a requisition form posted to make request. Our quartermaster, Chief Helpful, does his best to get anything we don’t have on board, but it can take some time.” The rec hall was filled with games, musical instruments, art and crafting supplies tucked into various storage areas.

“Cmdr Alden’s office is here,” she pointed out a door to their right, “He is also our chief science officer, but he doesn’t use the office much. He’s usually in the biology lab, across the corridor.” She stepped into the lab and glanced around, “Cmdr Alden.” When the Cmdr had walked over. “Cmdr Alden this is 1st Lt Riss Ch’ethyniq. Our new Chief Engineer.”

Yeoman Rand

Roman was sitting in the lab with a stack of paperwork and a very grumpy look. When he looked up and saw Rand he smiled and set down his PaDD stylus. Then he saw the Lieutenant next to her, stood and headed over.

The Commander was tall and well-built, by no means a bodybuilder, but certainly athletic. His hair was neatly combed, his uniform without a speck or a wrinkle on it. He stood with perfect posture as he greeted the Lieutenant with a smile, sticking out a hand for a handshake. “Lieutenant Commander Alden, first officer and chief science officer,” he introduced himself with a crisp, posh English accent.

~ Lt Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO

Riss took the offered hand in his own and gave it a single firm (but not too firm) shake and let go. “Lieutenant Commander, a pleasure Sir. The Yeoman was kind enough to give me brief tour. I do hope we are not interrupting.” he said. He looked around the room slightly and then returned his gaze to the man before him.
