She was crying, but Roman could tell it wasn’t because she was upset, not this time. He was happy too, grinning widely, admiring how the ring looked on her finger (as he’d been imagining it for weeks - it really did look better for real). Then he leaned down a little bit and kissed her back, his arms around her, holding her up and close. He wouldn’t care just then if the entire crew had been watching.

Rand would have, she wanted to say she wouldn’t care, but knew it would have made her nervous and anxious, and sick to her stomach. Which was why Roman made sure the observation deck was empty. They stayed in the observation deck, surrounded by the dancing blue light of the prime star, kissing for a lot longer than they probably should have.

They were standing there in each other’s arms, Rand’s head resting against his chest, when she suddenly realized, “This is why you’ve been acting so strange! And Chef too, and…” and it dawned on her how many people knew what was going on.

Rand

Roman grinned playfully as she realized how many people had been involved in planning this. “Where would I have gotten shepherd’s pies from without Chef? How could I have kept the observation deck empty all by myself? And Franks I told just so he could warn me if you were coming…” A lot of people went into planning something like this. “But you know who doesn’t know?” Roman said, still smiling. “Ensign Scott.”

“Roman,” Rand grinned at him, mischievous and teasing, “I’m going to kiss you again for that,” and she did. Then she hugged him again, arms around him, head against his shoulder. She was absolutely too content to worry about anything, but she did wonder how long she could keep it a secret from Scott.

Rand

It had driven her crazy, too, not being allowed to know. Watching him and Franks doing SOMETHING and no one telling her. Roman had secretly enjoyed the spectacle. Even more so when he was rewarded for his efforts with another kiss. He hugged her tight and stood with her a while, and then, “Ready to go back up to our quarters?” They’d be staying within view of the star for another few hours, and he needed to let the rest of the crew see it.

~ Roman

Rand sighed gently looking out the window, “Yes but no.” Rand looked out the window a moment longer. She really liked the way it sounded - our quarters. She knew it was silly, but it sounded better now. “Yeah, I’m ready.” There wasn’t anything to clean up or put away as Chef had agreed to take care of that too. She slipped her hand into his, the ring adding a happy weight to the sensation. Rand half expected Randy to be standing on the other side of the door just waiting to tease them, but he wasn’t there when the door slid open.

Rand

Thankfully for them, no one was out there, though Roman was sure he’d have plenty of overly private questions to answer tomorrow. He led her back up to their quarters and once they were there he pulled his violin case out of the closet and took the other ring box out of it to show her.

Rand watched him pull the box out and made a note that’s where Roman hid things. She would never ever invade his privacy, but it was good to know. She took the box and opened it, a finger tracing over the two matching gold bands nestled in the velvet covered pillow. Her gaze thoughtful and quiet, “Is ann le mo ghraid mise, agus is leamsa mo ghraidh.” These rings had been passed down for generations in her family. Rand honestly wasn’t sure how far back. She remembered her grandparents telling her when she was little, but it hadn’t seemed that interesting at the time. She could find out, later, those details weren’t pressing at the moment. She loved the rings and everything they represented. She held the box in one hand and reached over taking his. “I love them, but are they what you want, too?” No matter how much they might mean to her they didn’t mean much if she and Roman didn’t both find meaning in them.

Yeoman Rand

“I wouldn’t have accepted them if I didn’t love them,” Roman assured her with a smile, giving her hand a little squeeze. “They’re the style I was looking for anyway, and…” He took a little breath, “There are Alden family rings, too. They’ve been in the family since the 1200s, but they were handed down to my older brother some years ago. Fitting, I think, that I end up wearing the inherited ring of another family.” For more reasons that just that they were both family heirlooms, but also that he’d been disowned by his own, and was likely to be more welcome in Rand’s family than to the Aldens.
