David was supposed to be clever. He was a scientist. Serving in Starfleet. So why he he couldn’t master chess was a total mystery. He sat, staring at the board, long after his opponent had won and left. He still didn’t see it. It was a Vulcan mind trick, it had to be. People seemed disconcerted as they walked past David, staring at his chessboard and hardly blinking. Clearly something had broken and he needed to be rebooted, but no one could agree whose job it was to fix the scientists when they broke. So they stood around, sipped coffee and whispered, wondering what exactly had deposited this person where he was, and how it might be possible to undo it.

A shadow fell across the board and a hand cme down into the field of vision of the Scientist. It moved pieces back into place… but in the reverse of what they had been moved during the game. Then the hand stopped and said “Here. Thats where he got you. Remember, a rook moves through the six faces of a cube in any rank, file, or column. If you had done this-” and he moved the rook down two levels, “- then you would have had checkmate in four moves. Looks to me like you didn’t lose, as your opponent simply knew the rules better.”

The speaker was a tall humanoid, human looking but with web-like ridges across his broad forehead. He had a friendly smile and was carrying a small, clear case that held tools and handheld equipment. “Hope that helps. Its an easy game to get frustrated by… thats how you know its a good one.” and he turned to walk away.

David was awakened from his trance by what appeared to be an engineer speaking in his general direction and making a perilous amount of sense. He examined what the mysterious stranger had said and decided this was indeed correct and perhaps this mysterious stranger could help. “Are you any good at this?” David asked as the figure turned away. “If you have the spare time, I could use a pointer or ten.”

Riss smiled slightly. “My people don’t play this much… at least with other species. But I can show you some ways to look at the board that you may find interesting… if not helpful.” Riss looked past the table to the door and then said “I’ve got to finish my shift, but I can meet you here in two hours, if you like.”

David checked his watch. “I’d appreciate it Lieutenant.” He said with a smile.

He decided to stretch his legs and Get some much needed coffee in the interim.
