Captain Rogers has been making her routine daily rounds throughout the Sentinel mid-morning. She donned her typical command gold uniform top with black slacks accompanied with standard Starfleet issued boots. Her dark brown hair was tied in a neat bun as she made her way towards the turbolift area. Shirley entered the turbolift and as she turned to face the open hallway outside of the turbolift her green eyes met the approaching Andorian man’s gaze. It would be unacceptable at this point and definitively rude if she did not wait for him after clearly making eye contact with him, so she refrained from announcing her destination to the computer system until he made his way onto the lift. She took a deep breath and patiently waited for him to enter.

Kovan tended to spend a lot of time in engineering. Communications officer’s weren’t needed around the clock. If there ever was a need then he was one message away for a bridge summons. So he was just leaving main engineering and headed towards the turbolifts when he made direct eye contact with captain Rogers. Cyka. Kovan faltered mid-step, torn between the desire to turn on his heel and walk the other way to avoid being alone with a superior officer in the lift. The other, to soldier on and pretend that he wasn’t bothered by this. Kovan choose the latter and strolled into the turbolift.

Shirley’s hands rested at her sides, her eyes darted towards Kovan’s rank insignia on the cuffs of his uniform, and then returned to their previous focus as he entered the turbolift. She did inherit a younger crew for the most part and this fact did not surprise her for a second.

“Captain,” Kovan greeted with a stiff nod of the head. He stood a little straighter than he normally did, and clasped his hands behind his back.

The doors to the turbolift closed and Shirley turned her head upwards as her emerald green eyes meet Kovan’s gaze. He clearly knew her being the Sentinel’s Captain, but she did not know all of the junior officers on the ship. Shirley was the type of Captain that valued getting to know as many members of her crew as possible. It was one way for her to earn their buy in, show respect to her subordinates, and get an initial feel for each member of the crew.

A warm smile spread across her lips, “Ensign, What’s your name? And where are you headed?”

“Ensign Kovan ch’Sirhc.” Kovan said, trying not to sound like he was dreading the inevitable small talk. He was mostly successful. “Deck 8, ma’am.” Just keep your back straight. Grit your teeth and bear it. The captain may want to get to know her crew and understand them, but Kovan planned to do the opposite. He wanted to know as little as possible about his fellow crew. From details about their personal lives to their favorite dish in the mess, he did not want to be privy to a single detail of it. In fact, the less he talked to them and the less they talked to him the better. Kovan’s mouth has gotten him into enough problems and he can’t afford to lose this job.

Shirley looked up slightly, “Computer, deck 8.” She then glanced at Kovan, “It is nice to meet you Kovan....” She attempted to pronounce his surname, “Chuh, Sir cuh? I bet I totally butchered your last name. How do you pronounce it again?” A look of genuine curiosity was evident on her face.

Shirley thought up a question to avoid being awkward in the turbolift, “What are you working on for your duty shift today Kovan?”
