Shirley sat at the head of the table in the conference room next to the computer reviewing Chief Johansson’s personnel file while raising her glass to take a sip of her water with lime that Rand had provided her with earlier. She wore her standard command gold duty uniform top accompanied by black pants and boots. She appeared to be comfortable and relaxed with her legs crossed casually as she was also focused on getting to know one of her Enlisted personnel. After a minute or two passed, she rose to her feet and approached the communications panel on the door by the entrance to the room. She pressed the button and spoke in a calm tone,

=o= Chief Johansson, report to the conference room. =o=

Captain Shirley Rogers, CO

Karl was, as he so often found himself, lying underneath some panel performing repairs when the Com call came. He pulled himself up from under the lower deck emergency light maintenance console and frowned at the wall panel and walked to it [O]Aye Ma’am, on my way[C] He quickly gathered his tools together and half jogged to the nearest turbolift. He grabbed the turbolift handle “Main Engineering” He told the computer. A few moments later the door swished open and he entered catching the attention of one of the other noncom engineers and handed his toolbag “Put this away for me” He asked with a kindly smile before jumping back into the lift, grabbing the handle again “Deck 3” He called then took a step back. He quickly fixed his slightly messy hair then grabbed a cloth from his pocket to clean up his face. He’d learned a long time ago how to make himself presentable in a short amount of time for Command staff. When the lift doors opened he was as clean as he could be in such a short time.

The tall Icelander walked across the hallway in front of the conference room door, he put the cloth back into his pocket, straightened out his jacket then pressed the open door button and stepped inside. He placed hands behind his back, stood at attention and announced himself “Senior Chief Petty Officer Karl Jóhansson” He said looking straight forward as was proper.

Shirley met Karl at the entrance of the Conference Room and her eyes widened at the massive height difference between the Senior Chief Petty Officer and herself as she glanced upward at him to meet his gaze, “Chief, I am Captain Shirley Rogers. It is a pleasure to meet you in person. I read over your service record and the Sentinel is quite fortunate to have you on board without any doubt.” Shirley then immediately gestured to the seat closest to hers in the room, “Please take a seat Chief, we have much to discuss and I am sure that you need to get back to work in Engineering as soon as possible so I will not keep you for to long.” She headed over to her own chair and took a seat rather quickly to be mindful of the Engineer’s time.

Karl smiled politely “Your ship, Ma’am. I was only doing some minor tinkering, it can wait” He sat down in the indicated ship. He looked at ease, he sat respectfully straight but comfortably. He’d grown accustomed to conversing with high ranking officers, at least this time it wasn’t a recent graduate with delusions of grandeur trying to flex some imagined power. With a crew of a hundred-and-twenty, he’d tried to do his best to memorize most faces and some names but everyone knew the senior crew. Captain Rogers was young for her position, probably one of the youngest. He’d long since discarded the thought that age was the equal of experience. he’d seen fifty-something Chief Engineers be outshone by a twenty-two-year-old.

Shirley tilted her head slightly while she sat back in her chair comfortably with her legs crossed, “Chief, a personnel file can only tell you so much about one of your officers. You clearly have more years of leadership experience than several of my officers combined. Please tell me a little bit about yourself, past history, and your interests. Also, would you like a beverage?”

She perked an eyebrow in interest along with curiosity on getting to know the Chief.

Karl smiled earnestly at her offer “No thank you, ma’am, no drink for me” He rubbed his hands together “Well Uhm, I grew up Earthside, Iceland a small island nation in the northern hemisphere, always had a thing for tinkering with stuff, fixing old broken down hovercraft and the like. My grandmother inspired me to join the service, she was a MACO during the Romulan War and joined Starfleet after the founding of the Federation” He said with a wistful smile “Well when I was old enough I wanted to get out there and I thought four years at the Academy were too long so I went to Mars the TechServ Academy and as soon as I graduated I got myself assigned to the Celeborn, one of the first Miranda class ships, spent a decade there got married, had a boy, Sigmundur and somehow ended up a Petty chief, running my own team under the Chief” He said with a shrug.

“After Sigmundur was born we moved Earthside but My old Engineering chief asked me to come back for the Anti-Piracy campaign in the outer sectors back in ‘41. After that ended I moved back home but me and Sara” He paused, hand out “My then-wife” He said with an embarrassed smile, realizing he hadn’t named her before then “We got a divorce and after a few years I was assigned to the USS Thyme and I served there until I came here.” He scratched the back of his head “As for interests, I suppose tinkering works. I like to create clockwork constructs, putting gears to work, fixing old Earth wristwatches and the like.”

Bump for self. Will respond by end of day. Sorry for the delay.

Shirley’s manner was calm and collected as she learned quite a bit about her Petty Chief. He definitely had the most experience out of everyone aboard that she had spoken with thus far. This was common amongst the more senior enlisted as they had more experience serving in Starfleet and it had proven to be wise for her to listen to their opinions on dilemmas due to their abundance of seasoning in the field. Engineering was definitely not her strong suit, so she knew that she would lean on this man in the future to answer questions in the various encounters that they would eventually come across. Upon hearing about his marriages, it made her think about her own romance life which was severely lacking. She had chosen to go the command route and had not made time herself to settle down with a man quite yet. She would experience loneliness at times, but was now looking for that chance to find a significant other now that she had made Captain. She felt that her time was running thin on having a relationship and knew that she would have to address the issue soon.

After he finished answering her question, she tilted her head slightly while maintaining eye contact with him, “Sounds like you have quite the history Chief. I look forward to hearing some more stories of your time in Starfleet during our time together on the Sentinel. What would you say is your greatest strengths and weaknesses overall?” She asked this to see what she could capitalize on with him in the field and how to help bring strength to apply towards his weaknesses in the future.

Karl chuckled at the question “That’s a question I haven’t answered in a while. I’m good at my job and I’m most comfortable running around doing something, I dislike having nothing to do. I don’t find any task too menial to do or not worth my time, the little things can pile up so they need to be dealt with.” He paused for a moment “Weaknesses, Well I’m not particularly fond of Klingons, and I sincerely dislike anyone that has worked as a pirate” He said with a grimace “That dislike sometimes morphs into specieism towards Orions, Nausicaans or similar but I try to keep my predjudeces in check”

Shirley’s emerald green eyes focused on Karl as he talked and she nodded with interest in what he had to say to her. She definitely was surprised that he was somewhat xenophobic, but the crucial part is that he was upfront and honest with her. She had respect for both officers and enlisted crew that told the truth. Being in the Security field prior to command she was used to dealing with criminals and others that would lie to her face. Little did they know that Shirley was quite intuitive and began to start reading others better as she grew in her career field. Having in any field is valuable and Karl would surely play a pivotal role through his leadership with his leadership with the Sentinel’s Enlisted personnel.

Her expression turned serious, “Thank you for being honest. I expect you to utilize leadership skills to assist and develop the Enlisted crew on the Sentinel. Also, I know this from my past experience as a young officer who was mentored by older Enlisted Petty Officers at times coming through the ranks. They were able to show me the ropes in regards to several aspects of working in Starfleet and how to approach certain situations in the field that I was not exposed to in the Academy. A good portion of the engineering officers are young and lack experience in areas. I want you to set the standard and help them grow based off of your experiences. Can you make that happen?” Shirley paused as she also clearly looked forward to hearing Karl’s response as the man kept her interest. It was nice to talk to someone a little older than her because she was now one of the older members of the crew and was adapting to that new reality.

Karl chuckled at that “Of course ma’am, you know when I first started I always thought I’d just be doing what all the officers did, somehow expected them to be more knowledgable and perhaps at the start they were, but I often find that despite the fact that they often have excellent theoretical knowledge they oftentimes lack practical skills, I suppose the Academy can’t prepare you for what experience teaches.” he shook his head in an amused fashion “Besides nothing beats the determination and passion you get from students from Starfleet Academy, I’ll do my best and beyond that”

Shirley reminisced the times in the past that she had learned from more experienced Enlisted Starfleet personnel for a moment. All of those men and women that helped her grow and develop as a Starfleet officer truly made an impact on her career for the better. She grinned at Karl, “I could not have said it any better Chief. Now is there anything that I can do for you? Did you have any questions for me at all?” She tilted her head to the side slightly with an expression of curiosity evident on her face. She loved it when her crew asked her questions as well. It did not matter what they were personal, business, or leadership questions, she appreciated any of them. However, she would not hold it against anyone if they simply had no questions at the time because there was always later for that as well.
