He’d already met the Captain when she boarded, and he really thought this was a waste of time. However, formal check-ins were regulation, and he would never neglect something he knew he was supposed to be doing (unless, perhaps, it was a medical check-in). He already knew where the Captain’s office was. As he headed there, he remembered checking in to Captain Carmichael, who he had been friends with. Who had been thrilled to have him as a first officer, despite being newly promoted. He vaguely wondered what Captain Rogers thought of him. But it didn’t really matter, did it? It didn’t matter who his Captain was. He’d follow their orders and do his job. That’s what was important.

Roman rang the chime on the door, waiting patiently for her answer. The conversation would be quick, more than likely, just a formality. Then, he could get back to work.

Shirley stood in front of her mirror as she brushed her hair and evaluated the her new uniform as it was evident in her reflection. The Sentinel was one of several test ships that Starfleet issued new uniforms to that they were interested in potentially switching over to across the entire fleet as a whole. She took a liking to the set because it was a nice fresh start for her, not only in uniform style, but it included her first command opportunity. She heard the chime sound off in her quarters and set her hair brush on the counter by the sink. She glanced at her reflection one last time as she gave herself a once over and in result everything appeared to check out properly as she shifted her gaze in the direction of the entry door to her quarters, “Come in.”

The door opened and Roman stepped in, his hair nearly combed, his uniform spotless as always. “Captain.” He said as he stepped in. “Lieutenant Commander Alden reporting for duty.” He stood at the door, in a formal attention stance. Big on rules and regulations, he would consider that to be the only way to greet a Captain for a formal meeting.

OOC: Bump for self. Sorry, this one got buried behind a lot of posts!

Upon entering her quarters, Roman would see Shirley in her uniform, but had her hair down just past her shoulders. She kept it casual since she was in her quarters anyways and would put her dark brown hair up in a bun when exposed to the rest of the crew. Shirley gave Roman a once over and thought ‘Wow, that is one handsome first officer.’ She proceeded to smile at him as a natural response to an attractive man, “At ease Commander.” Still in full confidence in herself, she extended her hand to shake his in greeting, “I am Captain Shirley Rogers. It is a pleasure to meet you Commander Alden.” After they shook hands, Shirley gestured to the seat by her desk, “Please take a seat. We have much to discuss. Would you like to have anything to drink or to eat?” Shirley planned to reach out to the Yeoman either way to get herself a drink, she may as well be polite to her first number one. A good first impression played a key role to earn a subordinates buy in for the future going forward.

Roman did not return her smile, instead offering a polite nod. He shook her hand and sat down, his posture even sitting perfect. In front of the captain, he’d never allow his formality to slip. Roman was still getting used to the new captain, they’d hardly spoken so far. “No, thank you, ma’am,” he replied easily. He’d had his morning cup of black tea already. There was indeed much to talk about, but he waited for Rogers’ lead, looking at her expectantly to continue.

Shirley clasped her hands on the desk and nodded her head once, “I see, very well. Now tell me a little bit about yourself Commander. I would like to learn more about your history in Starfleet and a little bit about you personally. What are your interests and hobbies?” She wanted to break the ice a little bit and get to know her first officer in a casual manner to begin prior to covering the business aspect of Starfleet. Her goal was for Roman to not just feel like a pawn of hers, but someone who took interest in her crew.

Roman tensed slightly, he hated talking about himself. “I served on one ship before this one, I’ve always been a science officer. My transfer to the Sentinel was also my promotion to first officer.” He went on to list his qualifications and things like that. He sounded like he was reading his own personnel file. “I do martial arts, you can find me in the gym from time to time. But much of the time, I work.”

Shirley politely listened to her first officer with her typical calm demeanor that came with all of her initial introductions with her officers. She nodded as he went along, “You performed well during the transitional period between your former Captain and myself. Well done Commander, I suggest that you keep up the good work if you want to become a Captain in the future. I have already made it a goal to help get you there if that is truly the career path that you choose to follow. Now, speaking of Science, provide me with an update on your research aboard the Sentinel. What are you studying down there? How does it benefit the Sentinel directly and Starfleet as a whole?” Shirley had already planned to promote Alden to full Commander, with Starfleet’s approval in hand she planned to complete it in a promotion ceremony after the completion of their first mission in the Abyss.

Was his ambition that well known? It didn’t matter at any rate, as the Captain seemed supportive of his goals. “Thank you, Captain. We have several projects going on throughout the science department. As I said, I am a biologist myself, so I’ll start off with my own project…” He explained what he had each of the science subsections working on in detail, answering Shirley’s questions as she asked them. “These are our long-term projects, assuming something comes up during the Sentinel’s missions, it automatically takes priority.”

Bump for self. Will respond today. Apologies for the delay on this one.

Shirley listened to her Executive Officer and was thoroughly impressed. He appeared to know his department inside and out, she appreciated that fact of the matter. She had heard positive remarks about Commander Alden from his previous Captain. She could now see glimpses of what he may have seen in him. She looked forward to finding out more about him and to oversee his development as an Executive Officer. Perhaps he could be a Captain one day, but this was just in fact a good first impression,
the jury was still out. Afterwards she replied, “The tasks that your department are working on are satisfactory. However, tell me a little bit more in depth that project that you are working on personally. Biology is quite an interesting field, I enjoyed the course when I was at the Academy.” She then tilted her head slightly and appeared to interested in what Roman had to say about his project.

  • Captain Shirley Rogers

Roman covered a look of… annoyance, perhaps? His field went far deeper than the academy’s basic courses. In any case, he loved talking about his work and he went on for a while about Aldaria and the animals and other environmental samples he had aboard the Sentinel, and the state of his research into each of them. Five or six live animals, about a dozen separate plants, and other samples, like dirt or water. He’d done another similar project before, researching a different planet, but he did not speak of it. He spoke of his work only aboard the USS Victoria, his assignment before the Sentinel on which he had served as CSO, and his work on the Sentinel, which covered the entire Aldarian project. When he was finished describing his project to Shirley (and it did take a while, he really liked talking about his work), answering any questions she had as he went, he paused and asked, “Are there any other questions you’d like to ask about my work?”

~ Lt Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO

Shirley took in Roman’s words, this man was quite clearly highly intelligent and has solid leadership skills as well. She had heard nothing but good things about him from Carmichael in the past. This guy would definitely make a great Captain one day with a little fine tuning and some more experience under his belt. Not that Roman was inexperienced as an officer, he could just use more time in his position as Executive Officer. The sky was the limit for him, that was clear to Shirley at this point.

Shirley shook her head, “Not at this moment, but it is withotu a doubt quite intriguing work. I will definitely stop by your lab and check on the progress of your research from time to time. Did you happen to have any questions for me Commander? I am an open book, you can always speak freely with me.” It was always nice to be asked questions, but if Roman did not have any, it was still fine with her. Shirley did not want Roman to feel like this conversation was an interrogation or interview. However, she figured that he was about ready to get back to duty at this point anyways. He seemed to work hard and was efficient at his role at this point in time. His past performance reviews looked to be on point based off of her early observations. Being a former Security Officer Shirley naturally kept tabs on the crew, especially on ones holding key roles.
