It was driving Roman crazy watching her like this. She was confused and upset and there wasn’t anything he could do about it. He winced himself when she cried out as she tried to turn herself. He leaned in and carefully hugged her, hoping it would help at least a little. “Tha e gu bhith ceart gu leòr.” (It’s going to be okay). He’d forgotten to ask in Gaelic, he wondered if that had made it worse for her somehow. So he switched to Gaelic when he spoke this time.

Rand tried to hug him back even though the movement made her wince as she stretched the arm. It was uncomfortable, but not horribly painful. “Tha mi airson a dhol dhachaigh. Fuirichidh mi anns an leabaidh, tha mi dìreach airson a dhol dhachaigh. (I want to go home. I’ll stay in bed, I just want to go home.)” She didn’t remember they were stuck in the room for a reason and that leaving meant a security escort. She also didn’t know that their quarters had been tampered with as well. Of course at the moment she thought she was planetside in an unknown hospital and wanted to go home, wherever that was.

Rand

“Feumaidh tu fuireach an seo, cuimhnich? Mar sin chan urrainn na daoine às mo dhèidh do ghoirteachadh,” (You have to stay here, remember? So the people after me can’t hurt you.) Roman looked down at her, and his hug got a little tighter, careful not to hurt her, “Chan urrainn dhomh do chall.” (I can’t lose you.)

“Chan eil mi a’ dol a dh’àite sam bith. (I’m not going anywhere).” It took a minute for the rest of his words to sink in and then she sat up too fast and made her self dizzy, grabbing onto him to keep form falling. “Dè? Cò mu dheidhinn a tha thu a’ bruidhinn? Cò tha às do dhèidh? (What? What are you talking about? Who’s after you?)” She remembered something about a letter and then searching the crew manifest, but then it all slipped away. But his words felt true, but she couldn’t put context and events to what he was saying, but a terrifying dread spread through her. She had a brief flash of memory filled with fire and a loud explosion. She gasped and then the memory was gone. She curled into him, the room no longer soothingly dim, but dangerously dark.

Rand

“Chan eil duine cudromach.” (No one important.) Roman didn’t want to scare her anymore than he already accidentally had. Whoever it was, they needed to be caught. He was still sitting in the chair, leaned over the bed to hug her, and he had to move a bit when she sat up. He tried to get her to lay down again. “Tha geàrdan agam, cuimhnich? Bidh mi gu math.” (I have guards, remember? I’ll be fine.)

~ Roman

Roman said it wasn’t important, but it didn’t feel that way. Rand felt like she was missing something, like her head wasn’t working right again. It was like she had pieces for a jigsaw puzzle but none of the pieces went to the same picture. When Roman helped her lay down again, she didn’t argue about it. She’d made herself dizzy moving around too much. He had guards?! No, nononono Rand didn’t want to think about it. It was too confusing and didn’t make sense. They weren’t telling her everything, but she knew from before that the more she pushed to be told the less they would tell her. And her head hurt and everything was confusing, so it probably wouldn’t make sense to her anyway. “Gealladh (Promise)?”

Roman nodded, “Tha.” (Yes.) And then hugged her again, carefully tight. He wished she were there, well, she was there, but not really she was so confused she barely knew what was going on. He was reminded of when he’d hurt his leg, on Kelmao. He and Rand had an argument about his hiding things and afterwards she’d started making a point of reminding him she’d be there to handle things with him. Then we can figure it out if we need to, she’d said, stressing the we. This was the first time he felt like she wasn’t there. And it wasn’t her fault, it was the fault of her attacker. But that didn’t change how alone he felt. And he felt guilty for feeling that way, what she was going through was worse. He couldn’t imagine being so confused and lost, not able to understand things well, in a place he knew she was nearly as scared of as he was.

Rand was quiet the rest of the night, until she started having a nightmare. It woke her up, arms held up in front of her face, screaming about ‘Teine’ (fire).

Roman had eventually let her go and leaned back in his chair to try and get a little sleep. It wasn’t working. When her nightmare started, he put his hand on her shoulder, trying to comfort her. He knew she usually tried to help with his nightmares but he didn’t know how. So he just rubbed her shoulder. When she woke up, he pulled her into another hug. “Tha e ceart gu leòr, tha e seachad, tha e ceart gu leòr..” (It’s okay, it’s over, it’s okay) He repeated the same phrase, tha e ceart gu leòr (it’s okay) multiple times, keeping her held tightly in his arms.

He’d never, ever wanted her to suffer through nightmares like he did. The way he couldn’t sleep, the way he always woke, scared and shaky in the middle of the night. It was awful, and she didn’t deserve that. He had to catch whoever this was before they did anything to her, or Randy. His plans for tomorrow changed. As soon as morning came, he’d go looking for Ensigns Morgan and Ch’sirhc.
