Roman sighed. “I’d stay with her but I’m back on duty. I can’t.” He wished he could stay with her, she’d be a lot more comfortable in their own quarters, but he couldn’t get out of duty, especially after being off so long, without another medical reason or something. And a part of him said he’d rather be on duty anyway so he could catch the culprit and she’d be safe. “I’ll bring it and a few other things of hers next time I’m up there.”

Randy watched her vitals a moment. He wished she’d wake up, but also wishing she’d sleep. “I haven’t seen it since she got hurt, but if you can find her PaDD, she keeps the mouse you gave her in the storage tray.”

“She does?” Roman had almost forgotten about that. “It’s a wooden sculpture of Nibbles. I thought it was fitting, since it all started with her watching my mouse.” Her PaDD was probably in her office, he’d check there first.

Randy chuckled, “Of course she does. She’s a closet sentimentalist.” Randy didn’t want to say it because he didn’t know how Roman would take it, but that little wooden mouse probably meant more to Rand than her engagement ring did. And that was saying a lot.

Roman smiled, looking down at her again. “I’m glad she liked it.” Speaking of things he’d given her… her engagement ring was still in his pocket. He’d forgotten to give it back. Then again, he wasn’t sure she could wear it quite yet. Maybe it was best to hold onto it a little longer.

Rand had been awake long enough to hear them talk about her things. Roman wanted to stay, he couldn’t. They had to keep working or they wouldn’t get to stay together. “Feumaidh tu a bhith ag obair. Chan urrainn a bhith air a tharraing. (You have to work. Can not be distracted.)” Her voice was still slurred but more heavily tinged with sleepiness. She wanted to go home, but if Roman was bringing some of her things, then that wasn’t happening. She turned her hand over, under his, and tried to squeeze. She sighed as the skin and tissue stretched and ached. She supposed it was good she could actually flex her fingers now. She opened her eyes to look at Roman and then closed them as the room spun.

Rand

Roman looked down at her as she spoke and squeezed her hand gently. In Gaelic, “I know. This is my lunch. I’ll have to get back soon but it was more important to be here with you.” He sighed and said in Gaelic again, “I wish there were more I could do.”

~ Roman

Rand actually smiled at him, teasing, her Gaelic still slightly slurred. “You can eat then go back to work.”

Rand

Roman smiled back, glad to see her smile. “Fine then, I’ll eat first. Then I’ll be back after duty.” Maybe she was a little less confused, he hoped, if she’d caught that he’d been planning to skip lunch again. Maybe he was just wishing.

~ Roman

It wasn’t so much that Rand had caught it, as she knew how much he loved his work and he often worked through. And she still had that nagging knowledge that he’d been off duty for a long time. So he was likely to only drink tea all day in order to get caught up. She tried to squeeze his hand again and then told him to go because she was hungry too and then wanted to sleep, her head hurt.

Rand did sleep for awhile, but when she woke she was so quiet and looked so sad, Randy had to do something. Adopting his best sass and ‘valley girl’ voice, “Oh giiiirrrl your hair is a mess. Come here and let me fix it. You know I’ll make it look faaabuuuulous darling!” Rand grinned and laughed despite herself. Randy found some dry shampoo, in an aerosol can (how antique), and propped Rand up with a bunch of pillows and went to work. He gently rubbed the shampoo into her scalp, avoiding the large bump on the back of her head, and working it into the long tresses. However this did not agree with Rand’s hair. Oh it was clean and healthy looking when he was done and had TOO MUCH Volume. The aerosol just put a bunch of static into her hair and the more Randy tried to work it out, the worse it got. By the time he was done, Rand’s hair was 3 times bigger than her head, all the way around, in a classic 1980s do and looked like it had been teased with one of those metal toothed hair picks that were all the rage back then.

Her hair was everywhere and whatever he did just made it worse. With all that red she looked like her hair was on fire. In an attempt to tame it, Randy gathered it up, off center into a high pony tail (to accommodate the bump) and tied it with an old fashioned scrunchy. But Rand’s hair was SO massive and frizzed out by then the pony tail stood straight up with the end making a large poof on top of her head. And it was horribly tangled. Randy was mortified, but Rand was laughing. He’d have to make it up to her later.

Rand

Roman was back after his shift, PaDD and work in hand and sat next to her bed before he looked up and saw her hair. “Miranda, you look fluffier than Pipkin! What happened to your hair?”

~ Roman

Poor Rand turned bright red and glared at Randy, “Thuirt thu gu robh e a’ coimhead gu math! (You said it looked fine!)”

Randy chuckled, “Bha mi a’ feuchainn ri toirt ort faireachdainn nas fheàrr. (I was trying to make you feel better.)” Then he left when Morgan arrived at the door. Morgan only glared at him as he smiled at her. She as still REALLY angry at him.

Rand looked confused, “Dè rinn Randy ri Morgan? (What did Randy do to Morgan?)” She muttered it, not really a question to anyone. Then she sighed turning back to Roman, “Dh’fheuch Randy ri seampù tioram a chleachdadh air. Tha e uile snaidhm agus ‘fluffy’ a-nis. (Randy tried to use dry shampoo on it. It’s all knotted and ‘fluffy’ now.)”

Rand

Roman wasn’t touching the question of what Randy did to Morgan with a ten foot pole. That would require telling her what stupid risky Randy had come up with. Instead he smiled and waved her closer, and in Gaelic, “Come here and I’ll fix it for you.”

~ Roman

Roman had that look - the Robinhood one. The one that was all roguish and noble at the same time. The one that made her stomach flip-flop, made her giddy, and her face flush that shade of pink he liked. The one that made her breathless and her voice more air than sound. “Ceart…gu leor…(oh…kay…)” Rand leaned towards him, but for the sake of her balance and her head, she had to actually move. She turned on her side, moving closer to the edge of the bio bed. Despite the need to move, the adjustment in her position did nothing to calm the flush on her cheeks or ease her breathlessness. She loved when he looked at her like that.

Rand

Her voice was breathless and she’d turned that soft shade of pink and that seemed to make that look on his face stick around longer. Roman waited until she’d moved and had her balance and then he started slowly and gently playing with her hair in his hands, slowly detangling and taming it by running his hands through and separating the strands. He wouldn’t let it pull hard against her head, he didn’t want to make her head feel worse, so it was a long while he was sitting there, gently running his hands through her hair occasionally stopping to admire the red strands of hair across his fingers.

~ Roman

The steady gentle rhythm of his fingers in her hair was comforting. It soothed the anxiety caused by her extreme confusion. This was familiar. His warm presence, the sound of his steady breathing, and the faint crisp earthy smell of his cologne that had faded over the day. She closed her eyes as he slowly worked the tangles out.
He was always meticulous and careful. She wasn’t dozing though, that was obvious by the continued blush on her cheeks. She was just still, in the present moment, not worrying about what she could or could not remember.

His hand paused again, but this time for longer. She opened her eyes to look at him and was able to study his profile. She really loved him, and she was going to marry him. He was so close, and she leaned in to kiss him.
