Kovan remained straight faced all through the elven woman’s speech. He didn’t believe for a second that she was going to give them a gift out of the kindness of her heart. A gift to total strangers that she did not interact with in any meaningful way. They only happened to ride together on the same boat. A boat she was hired on as crew who she didn’t seem to share a connection with either given her sudden departure. Her whole angry speech was petty. A tantrum where she tried to get back at them by rescinding an offer they neither expected to receive and that she likely had no plan on giving in the first place.

Roman shot a glare at Kovan that said did you HAVE to make her angry? They didn’t need to make enemies. But on the other hand, at least they were finally alone. “Let’s go. Before she decides to do anything about your… civility.

And Kovan was just as unaffected by Roman’s glare, and shrugged in way that could be taken as apologetic. Could be. “I doubt she wants anything more with us.”

Alwyn shook his head and pressed his fist on Kovan’s shoulder in an attempt to lighten the atmosphere: “Don’t worry. I, too, have a lot of difficulty with the opposite gender. If you want a shoulder on which to cry, you found it.”

Looking around, he made sure he couldn’t see the elve before adding : “Joke aside, can you cover one of my side ? I’ll try to run a quick scan.”

Ensign Alwyn Yarwood - Doctor

Kovan looked down at Yarwood, open confusion on his face. He purposefully antagonized the woman with a racist comment he learned from the city guards. But sure. He has trouble communicating with women. Speaking of communicating with women. . . “Alright but afterwords you need to apologize to Rand. She’s a professional actress and you just laughed at her performance.” Kovan turned so that he could cover Yarwood’s blind spot, and pulled out his own tricorder to run passive scans while he watched out.

Alwyn raised his head at Kovan with a saddened face : “Oh… I didn’t mean to…” He made a look at Rand and felt like an idiot. It wasn’t her performance that made him laugh, but the sudden change and… The scan, he thought, focusing back. I’ll have the time to apologize after that.

With Kovan at his side, he hid his other side with his cape and ran a scan on the surrounding.

Ensign Alwyn. Yarwood - Doctor

Running a scan, life sign wise the tricorder picked up the elven woman heading north-west at a fast walk. Beyond the landing party, the tricorder also picked up various small animals, birds, and a few of the larger wolf like creatures some distance away to their south and north sides. They weren’t moving this way yet nor seemed to notice them on the wind. Energy readings wise, when the tricorder began to do its work here, the screen flickered in front of Yarwood. As if something was wrong with the tricorder. Then whatever was going on with the device cleared up and the scan completed, energy patterns showed nothing standing out beyond expected readings. They had about less then 2 hours before the sun was to go down. If they were going to make tracks through the woods they may as well do it now.....

Rand was mortified. Why did Kovan have to say that? I was bad enough Yarwood laughed. That was enough to set Rand’s anxiety off because she didn’t exactly know why he was laughing. She was too chicken to ask him too. Instead she just marched off into the woods, her tricorder wand wedged into her pack so it could pick up whatever data it could as well as record their musings…Oh NO it was in the record now, her tricorder would have picked up what Kovan said. No! nonononono. Focus! She could panic later, deal with it later. Focus on the problem.

Their two Red Shirt NEs walked along near her, visually scanning about and listening, finding the clearest path. Now Rand was very well read, in modern and classical topics, and she’d acted in plays for A LOT of various genres, and asked to perform in even more. Something about this just seemed…familiar to Rand. As she walked, she muttered under her breath, repeating names and locations, musing about details they had gleaned from others.

“Mi- Ensign Farquharson, wait! You don’t need to go wandering off splitting the group.” Roman said, hurrying after Rand and the redshirts.

Suddenly Rand stopped, “I DO know this. It’s Curse of Strahd!” Redshirt Ward looked back at her. “It’s Curse of Shroud? What’s that?”

Rand shook her head, “Strahd. It’s from Dungeons and Dragons. An old Earth role play game. The elements and characters and races were inspired by high fantasy authors like Tolkien. The mechanics aren’t important though. This terrain, the people, the Villages, the lake, the tavern we passed, it’s ALL from one of the adventures entitled Curse of Strahd. I’m sure of it. The last village, Barovia, where we are headed, was a prison for Strahd.”

Ward chuckled and just looked at her, “Yeah? What did he do?”

Rand resisted the urge to roll her eyes, he didn’t have to believe her. “Here, I have no idea, but in the story he was imprisoned and trapped in Barovia because he was a vampire.”

Yeoman Rand

Roman looked at Rand like I didn’t know you were such a nerd. “You played Dungeons and Dragons?” He asked, stopping next to her as he spoke.
