(snip)

Kovan watched as Rand put the symbols to paper and because he was a jerk, picked up the pad and pretended to study it for a while. To really draw out the tension. Then, “You got it. Good work.” Kovan said. He took up the marker and drew the symbol for phasers with a different molecule in the center with a circle around it. “So long as you can understand the intention of the symbols it doesn’t need to be exact. Like this,” He drew a third symbol, “This is another type of energy weapon, more common outside of Federation space.”

Rand waited, it was either right or wrong. It would be nice if it was right, but Rand wasn’t counting on it. Or maybe Kovan was trying to figure out her thinking on why she chose what she did for ‘phaser.’ She tried not to worry over him taking so long. She knew he had a reputation for being a jerk but she didn’t think he would lie and say it was wrong if it wasn’t. She couldn’t help the small grin though when he said she got it right. It was covered quickly by her copying the new symbols and what they meant.

He flipped to a new fresh page and spoke, “I think you got the hang of the written form. I can write out the rest of the official symbols later and send them to you but we’ve covered all the common ones so far. If you’re feeling ambitious we could go over the basics of the spoken form, but it’s not going to be something you’ll get in one session.”

Rand nodded, she had expected to have several weeks of lessons. She pulled the chain from around her neck and looked at her watch. “I have 20 more minutes before I my next set of errands. If you think that is enough time, I’d like to get started.”

Yeoman Rand

Twenty minutes left? Kovan double checked the time on his PaDD and realized just how long this lesson had taken so far. He had completely lost track of time. “Huh. Well. No. That wouldn’t be enough time.” His brows furrowed together for a moment before composing himself again. “We can schedule another lesson. There’s a lot of lingual basics to cover. The hardest part with spoken Tradealouge is that its adapted to the speaker’s native tongue and vocal ability. That’s what the dialects are, that species’ version of Tradealouge.

“We’ll call it there for today. Here.” He pushed the drawing pad back to Rand, “You can keep that and use it for practice.”

Rand was eager to learn more, “Let’s schedule another lesson.” As Kovan had told her it was a relatively simple idea but it also had a lot of room for individual creativity and interpretation. Rand took the drawing pad and slipped it into a drawer of her desk. “I will.” She would spend time everyday coming up with sentences and then writing the translation underneath for Kovan to check the next time they met.

Yeoman Rand

Kovan gave Rand the times that would work for him before standing to awkwardly shuffle out. “Uh, see you next time. Or around?” Ugh, he was acting so awkward, before he did anything embarrassing he made a hasty escape from the cramped yeoman’s office.

At the next session Kovan arrived on time. Stiff and formal at first, but gradually loosening up as the session went on. He truly had a passion for languages. Anyone who has been in the field for as long as him had to. As Rand mastered the language, Kovan came up with new ways to test her knowledge or critical thinking skills. He seemed to know an endless supply of dialects, but really he was creating them on the spot using other languages he knew as the base.

“You’re really good at getting the accent and inflection right. Not many people pick them up so fast.”
