The day continued on like that. Randy sent anything he came across to Roman just to give him something to do. He didn’t like that the fever was still up, but told Roman he had to use the compresses since a shower was out of the question with the burns. He also brought lunch and made Roman eat as much as he could. There would be more antibiotics after dinner.

Roman had no appetite. The food, which he knew was good because Gorshin’s food always did, tasted like dirt. He wasn’t going to eat but Randy stayed and made sure he did. He was supposed to be keeping the cold compresses on, and he had no complaints about that. The fever was making him miserable.

Randy had lunch with Rand. She was tired and missed Roman not being there but believed he had a lot of work to get caught up on. She wanted to help him, she should be doing more, or so she felt. She had all kinds of reports ready just for Roman’s signature from while he was out, but she couldn’t remember which ones or what she did with them. She also didn’t bat an eye about the lab being restricted. She just assumed they were cleaning the cages or running an experiment. Because she was up and walking as much as she could and was allowed, she fell asleep after lunch.

Roman was kept busy by the things Randy sent him. The disciplinary actions took longer than he expected. He was tired and working slower than usual.

At dinner Randy brought a tray and then walked Rand up to their quarters. She needed a lot help, but she was excited enough to not complain. The walk wasn’t as bad as it would have been 2 days ago, but it was farther than she had walked in awhile. Randy insisted she sit on the bed rather than a chair. She made a face at him as he left, behind his back.

Rand

Roman hugged Rand as soon as she was settled on the bed as if he hadn’t seen her in a week. “Miranda! How has your day been?” He hated having to leave her alone in sickbay. Randy had brought them dinner, but Roman still felt full from lunch. Randy didn’t stay, but then he didn’t have to. Roman would worry Rand if he didn’t make himself eat.

Rand hugged him back, her smile alone conveying how happy she was to be there and not in sickbay anymore. She laid heavily against him. Luckily his shoulder was healed. She started rattling on in Gaelic, her speech slow but not slurred, much. “I slept really late. I didn’t even hear you leave this morning. I guess I was really tired, Elbbirt said I really over did it yesterday. He wouldn’t let anyone else walk with me.” She was quiet for a little while. “I made it past the lab, but then Elbbirt made me stop. Said I was stumbling. I think I could have made it. OH did you get the labs clean? Franks said somebody cross contaminated the animal cages.” Franks excuse for explaining why the lab was closed to everyone by assigned crew.

Roman nodded, hiding the guilty look. “They were cross contaminated. It was caused by a log mistake. It’s… It’s not cleaned up yet.” Lucky his shoulder was healed, also lucky she didn’t lean on or touch his other burn. He hugged her tightly, looking really tired. He hadn’t been sleeping well, and being sick was making him tired too. “I’ve been busy. I missed a lot.”

“I know. You should work. Shrine brought me some real books to read. The screen still makes my head hurt, and with all the walking, I’m tired. It’s important you work.” She got that confused look for a moment. Like she couldn’t quite remember why it was important that he concentrate on work and not her. The reason of course being their relationship and being able to maintain professional boundaries.

Roman nodded, “I know.” If Randy were there, he’d have shot a look at him as he said, “It’s important I get everything done that needs doing.” He was not going to sit around in his quarters for who knows how long. Roman hated paperwork duty, which was effectively what Elbbirt had put him on.

Rand sighed, “I wish I could help.” Rand was relieved that Randy had taken over her duties. The truth was Rand had maintained her duties until she had gotten hurt. She’d had to adjust her schedule and where she worked, but things still got done. It had been only about a week, but time was muddled for her. She didn’t want the captain to think that she could manage without her yeoman because then that would mean Rand was useless.

Her hand reached up, gingerly touching the back of her head and it made her hiss slightly. “My head hurts. I didn’t want to tell Randy, I was afraid he wouldn’t bring me up here.”

Rand

Roman pressed her against him and shook his head. “You should tell him. I think he would’ve done it either way.” Maybe normally he wouldn’t, but Roman figured Randy thought having her up here would motivate Roman to stay here. “I want your head to get better. That means not pushing yourself too much. Right?”

~ Roman

Rand looked up at him, “I didn’t. I only did what Elbbirt said I could do.” Or at least she thought she did. They wouldn’t let her come up here if she had. She gave him a teasing look. “I think he knew because when he thought I was tired he tried to carry me. I told him, only you can do that.” Then giggled a little as her face flushed red. The concussion both upped her anxiety and made her blurt out things she normally wouldn’t.

Roman looked down at her and smiled. “I will carry you wherever you want, whenever you want. Aaaalllllll the way back to sickbay,” He drew out the word and put his arms under her like he was going to lift her.

Rand giggled again and pressed her face into his neck holding onto his shoulders. Should he be lifting her? What about his heart, or was that healed now? Those thoughts worried and upset her and she let them go. “I don’t want to go back to sickbay. Not yet, I just got here. Besides my foot’s not broken.” Her memory was better today, it was easier to remember things from before Roman’s accident.

The giggle made her head hurt and she got that pained look on her face. She glanced around, trying to figure something out. “Ice?” Her head hurt and if it kept up she wouldn’t be able to eat because her stomach would get upset.

Rand

Roman opened the drawer where Randy had put the ice packs and compresses earlier, took an ice pack out, activated it, and pressed it gently against her head. “Randy left some extra ice packs up here in case you needed them.” That wasn’t technically a lie. They were for both of them. Roman had taken off his compress for his fever, not wanting Rand to question why he needed one.

~ Roman

Rand curled up quietly with him and closed her eyes waiting for the ice to start working. When it did, she sighed as the throbbing and burning ache cooled. “What did you do today?”

Rand
