Dr. Thaddeus MacKenzie, cane in hand, made his way through the corridors of the Sentinel, heading towards the sickbay. He had been through this routine countless times before – reporting to a new Chief Medical Officer, each with their own quirks and expectations. The prospect of going through it again left him feeling grumpy and irritable. Upon reaching the sickbay, Dr. MacKenzie was greeted by the bustling activity of medical staff attending to their duties. He glanced around the room, searching for the Chief Medical Officer. A nurse noticed his arrival and approached him with a polite smile.

“I need to speak with the CMO” Tad said sternly to a lab tech walking by.

“Dr. MacKenzie, welcome to the sickbay. Please have a seat,” she gestured towards a row of chairs near the entrance.

“Of course, another wait. Just what I needed,” Dr. MacKenzie muttered under his breath, his tone dripping with sarcasm. He meandered over to the chairs, lowering himself into one with a heavy sigh. As he waited, he couldn’t help but observe the staff working around him, scrutinizing their every move.

“Is that how they taught you to administer a hypospray?” he grumbled, addressing a young medical technician. “You’re supposed to hold it at a 45-degree angle, not perpendicular.”

The technician, taken aback by Dr. MacKenzie’s brusque demeanor, stammered, “Uh, yes, sir. Thank you, Doctor.”

Dr. MacKenzie continued to watch the sickbay’s activity, offering unsolicited critiques and advice to anyone within earshot. His gruff and irritable attitude made it clear that he was not thrilled about reporting to yet another CMO.

Nurse Matron keep a close eye on the newcomer, somewhat surprised at his apparent lack of bedside manner. She sidled over to Charlie and gently tapped her on the shoulder. “Dr? I believe your new recruit is here and although my grasp of human emotions is not that acute, I can surmise he’s not exactly happy about it. Good luck.” She stated in her usual matter of fact tone before going about her business.

Charlie peered round the corner to see what appeared to be her new doctor although he looked old enough to be her grandfather. “Yep, this is going to be fun…” she muttered before plastering on a smile and striding out to meet him.

“Dr MacKenzie?” She asked, extending her hand as she went over to meet him. “Welcome to sickbay, it’s a pleasure to have you on the team,” she added with a chirpy optimism.

Lt (jg) Bailey, CMO

Dr. MacKenzie looked up from his medical bag, his expression giving away his general discontent. However, he maintained his professionalism and shook Lt. Bailey’s hand firmly.

“Aye, that’s me. Dr. Thaddeus MacKenzie,” he said gruffly, trying to sound at least somewhat welcoming. “Pleasure to meet you, Lt. Bailey.”

He forced a thin smile, attempting to mask his irritable demeanor. After all, this was his new team, and he needed to make an effort to work well with them, regardless of his personal feelings. With a deep breath, Dr. MacKenzie prepared himself and stayed otherwise quiet, measuring up his new boss.
