“Xam… call me Xam. And anyone with a brain talks about the brass that way… but I guess you are onto something there.” He looked down at his tray for a moment, weighing whether or not to be honest, and then he looked up with a grin and said “And you are right. I didn’t start off as a Star Fleet officer. I started off as a smuggler… and a pirate.” and he took a drink.

“We all come from somewhere. All the best officers, enlisted or commissioned, bring something more, something different than what the regulation book states. That’s what makes the best crews.” Rand’s brows drew together slightly. There was a memory there, elusive and she couldn’t catch it. She rubbed her hand across the back of her neck and sighed. It would come back to her, eventually, maybe. She placed a smile back on her face. “Hopefully your time here will add to your story.” She wondered what Kovan would make of Xam. She speculated that they would either get along just fine or hate each other.

Yeoman Rand

Xam looked at her for moment and then chuckled quietly. “Wow… not the typical reaction I get when that bit of history is brought out. But definitely a nice change.” and the chuckle was slightly louder.

Ra’Ti, Tactical

“Well you wouldn’t be the first person I have met with an…adventurous history. I would think that your experiences would give you unique perspectives.” Rand was finished with her own meal and sat back, but still with excellent posture, as if it was unconscious habit. “I hope you find it a nice change with the majority of the crew.” Most people didn’t worry about such things, but there were a couple that had their eyes covered with shaded lenses.

Yeoman Rand

Xam’s eyes widened and he said “Yeah. Sure. ‘Hope in one hand…’ as the human adage goes, right? I’ll just try to enjoy the peace and quiet before the whispers and glances start.” There was an air of expectation and resignation to his words, but his overall attitude remained the same.

Ra’Ti, Tactical

Rand would have to ask Kovan about it. She didn’t remember there being a whole lot of whispers and gossip about him, but then she didn’t socialize enough to notice. “Cmdr Alden won’t put up with it.” Of course the Lt didn’t strike her as the type to make an official complaint about something like that. “If you decide it needs official attention.” She finished her water as a stout muscular man in a chef’s Ops red coat walked over holding a small bowl. He gave iff a very grandfatherly or favorite yncle type of vibe. “Afternoon Rand. How was the stew? I see you have new crew with you.” He held his hand out to Xam, “I’m Gorshin, the chef obviously. And now I know why we got this huge shipment of levithi nuts. You need them three times a day, right?” He set the bowl down containing the nuts, “Do you eat them like this or cooked? I’m sorry to say I don’t know.”

Yeoman Rand

Xam smiled, shook his hand, and said “Wow, haven’t seen any of these in a while. I just take an oil supplement and call it good.” He picked up a nut and tossed it up in the air and caught it in his mouth. He bit down on the almost rock-hard nut and it cracked and shattered with a loud CRUNCH. He smiled and chewed a few times and swallowed. “Thanks, Gorshin. And raw is the way, absolutely. I’m Xam. The new Tactical Officer. Good ta meet ya.”

Garshin nodded, “I will keep them marked in the pantry with your name. You take as much as you need. Just make sure you let me or Rand know when you get low. Resupply is…what Rand?”

Rand glanced up at the ceiling while she calculated their position. “3 weeks out where we are currently headed.”

“So three weeks. Medical can probably handle the oil if you prefer that. And if there is any dish you would like served, let me know. We should all be able to have a taste of home as often as we can.” There was a repetitive ding from the kitchen. “Ah, well that’s my warning. Don’t want the bread to burn. Nice to meet you, Xam.” The man sauntered back into the kitchen humming as he did.

Rand smirked, “He usually gives people about three weeks before he starts hounding you for your favorites. If asked he will tell you that cooking for others is his ‘calling’. Are you ready to continue your tour?”

Yeoman Rand

Xam finished his drink and said “Yep. Let’s do this.” and he stood and got rid of his tray. He looked at Rand and said “Lead on, fair lady.”, gesturing her forward.

Ra’Ti, Tactical

Rand glanced at him, a hint of…something…over the comment, but slipped the strap of her PaDD over her shoulder and stepped out of the gallery and across the corridor. “Ship’s recreation room.” There was a ping-pong and an air hockey table as well as several seating areas and tables. “The cabinet on the right holds a wide variety of games. The left various art and craft supplies, and towards the back are book shelves. It’s a small collection but a variety. If there is anything from games to books that you would like to see you can ask the quartermaster, Chief Helpful, we might have it in storage. If not you can make a requisition for it, and we’ll try to get it.”

Yeoman Rand

Xam just nodded and looked as the cabinet was pointed out. As they walked along, he said “So what do you do for fun? Not you specifically… just the crew.”

Ra’Ti, Tactical

Rand led him around the entirety of deck 9. “There have been ping ping and air hockey tournaments, poetry readings, art displays.” She paused, “This isbthe biology lab and the door just down to starboard is the XO’s office. If you need to find him, check there first.” Then she continued, “Well there is the gym also, and we have ship functions there. We emoty the gym out. We hold dances, parties, talent shows and the like. This is the entrance to sickbay,” she pointed and checked her PaDD. “Your physical is scheduled for 1645 later this afternoon.” She stepped onto the nearest lift. “This is the cargo lift, it comes out near the storage bay on deck 2 for the torpedoes and right across from the main cargo bay in deck 6.”

Yeoman Rand

“Torpedo bay. Heck yeah, let’s do it. See what Im getting into here.” Xam said with a chuckle. He stepped onto the lift and when they stepped off, he turned immediately to the right and walked into the torpedo storage bay.

Sleek, black, lozenge-shaped casings lay in storage racks. Zam walked through the bay slowly, eyes darting here and there and giving every square inch a once-over. “Well, I definitely got some work to do. This place is a disaster, organizationally speaking. But I’ll get it lined out.”

Ra’Ti. Tactical

Rand lifted her PaDD and made note, “Would you require any extra hands, Lt? I can have some crewmen assigned here specifically for whenever you want them.”

When he was done with his inspection, Rand led him back to the lift. “That was our secondary storage space. They are brought here from the cargo bay when delivered and then transferred up to deck 2.” The door opened and they stepped out, “Escape pods are designated with these markings,” she pointed out the labeling and the controls. “Found on decks 2, 3, 7, and 8. Other than those, this entire deck is devoted to torpedo control, launchers, storage, and maintenance.” Rand stepped back letting him decide how he wanted to go about viewing the different areas.

Yeoman Rand

Xam looked around and shook his head after a moment. It was obvious that two things had happened in the storage area. One, no one was slated to work there regularly. And two, those that did either hadn’t been specifically to do shop’s weapons systems; or they had, but decided to simply not do it.Xam looked at Rand and said “Um… yeah. I’m gonna need four personnel who are tasked only with working here under rmy direction. Engineering and-or security backgrounds, preferably some of each.”
