Rotating one by one through the many MANY various frequency ranges was quite a time consuming process. Even if set to be done by the computer, only the fine ears, and reasoning of a real person could truely decipher any anomalies. Such it was that three hours and 20 some minutes had passed when ch’Sirhc caught a slight oddity on one of the higher end bands used for subspace radio traffic. It was a band line that normally was used for simple long range subspace transmissions of audio only bandwidth. Normally such should be filled with hits of many types, whether recent or new. But here beyond three signal echoes coming from Vok III itself at the colony which were just echoes of local traffic for flight control There was nothing else! This was quite odd really as one would expect currently running or echoes of fading recent use going to and from the colony. So if you ignored the flight control bands there was just......dead silence, which after almost three and a half hours of work was just plain WEIRD.

“Cmdr Alden, you have the bridge. Find out what happened to our second probe. Let me know what they find with the ship. I am goin’ down and introducin’ myself ta the Colonial leaders. Anythin’ I should know?” Rende hated this kind of diplomacy. People who wanted their independence, were rude about it, but too cowardly to let go of the apron strings. “En Farquharson stay here and assist the Cmdr as needed.”

Asam, CO

“Understood, Captain.” Roman was better with diplomacy, but this colony he found rather detestable and was happy to stay on the ship with Rand.

The probes finally came back with more information. Out to a range of a light year or so both could confirm there was no obvious sign of any ships. If there were they could be cloaked or using some more advanced stealth system that the probes could not counter. But beyond the expected traffic in the region from the three colonies on record nothing seemed out of place. There was that earlier odd signal silence that Ch’Sirhc caught though such a band should be full of recent or fading echoes of comm traffic but there wasn’t any as noted.

Kovan felt he’s heard enough, or lack of enough, to come to the conclusion that something was wrong. “Sir,” He swiveled his chair around to face the XO, “I’ve found something of note. An oddity, if you would. Put on an ear piece and listen to band alpha zeta pi. You tell me if a productive colony with flourishing trade would be so quiet on a common subspace radio traffic line.” Kovan gave the XO a moment to tap into the frequency and hear for himself. “This line should be full of pings and echos and all you can hear are murmurs from Vok’s flight control. Take that out and. . . nothing.”

Space may be a massive void of emptiness but silence? This close to a populated planet? That warranted investigation.
